we wouldnt need lawyers if we didnt have law. shit.. lets get rid of law and make the world a better place! Its human instinct to be better at things; some people just try to do it in a different way. If everyone was doing exactly the same thing; and i dont think im alone in saying this; we'd be pretty fscked. but on the plus side, we wouldnt have to deal with cheaters cus we wouldnt have computers or.. i dunno.. a two-legged walking style? (oh excuse all the me being all wierd :P its like.. monday i think.. ehh.. tuesday and its 10:30.. what else would I be)

I see your point, however it doesn't justify his statement. I loath this love/hate romance he imagines exists between the cheat creaters and the anti-cheat guys. The letter sounds hypocritical to me and it oozes egotistical self-depreciation. Does he really expect the HL community to thank him for his contribution. To me the guy hacked a game, his letter sounds like a eulogy.

BTW, to use your example... I know why we have and need laws, but can we rationalise crime because it makes better laywers and jails?

Dude, are you kidding?? You say it's human instinct to be better at things, and you analogise law with cheats...well, the thing is law is GOOD and cheats are BAD. It is also a human instinct to be able to tell the difference between good and bad. It's what makes us human.

Well, you can make up your own conclusions about people who don't see the difference...or worse still, do see the difference but ACT purposefully in the bad way.

Wow, someone flaming Valve, nothing new here!

Seriously, he is right though, VAC does a horrible job of protecting us, and he should know since he's responsible for being the pain in the ass everytime you go into your favorite pub and there's a hacker on.

I can understand if he keeps the hacks for himself, messes around on a random pub here and there, posts his results, flames Valve for nothing doing their job, etc.

But the fact he puts it out there for anyone to download or alter according to their own needs... that's how you draw negative attention. But I'm sure he didn't care what kind of attention he got, positive/negative...

"Wow, look at me, I make h4x! I give them to llamas to make your gaming experience living hell!"

                  That really gets results.

Well, having him "retire" is a good thing for now I guess, but now it's time to wonder what script kiddie will pop up next to replace his spot as the asshole who makes our CS experience suck...

um. law exists to make the rich richer and the poor poorer; metaphorically and literally. the whole legal system is developed and run by the rich, prosperous and powerful; what else would it do? I'll agree the analogy was a little.. extrapolated, but getting rid of cheaters wouldnt stop the problem of cheats; if you get what i mean..

Also; there is seldom a good and bad. Is it ok for a single mother to be a prostitute to pay for her children to go to college?.. though here I'd have to agree cheats are pretty much the antichrist. But without cheats we probably wouldnt have had hlamp or anything so.. its debatable; even if that is a mute point now; it was fun while it lasted.

well he did steal a bunch of cdkeys from them :P
BTW, to use your example... I know why we have and need laws, but can we rationalise crime because it makes better laywers and jails?
I was going more for the "if we didnt commit crime we wouldnt need lawyers" tangent; with a dash of "its only illegal if you break the law, crime is what the people at the top say it is"

but you might use the same argument to describe war; but war has given us so much that we consider purely natural.. dynamite, nuclear power, the haber process (helps make fertilizers so all the americans can eat lots :P) etc etc; and I'm sure there are also suitable advances generated through crime prevention; as both military and police need to compete.

it doesnt really apply to cheats though. except mapbugs being fixed so you dont get stuck and stuff.. i guess.

to be honest i dont know why we have or need laws, if it's human instinct to know what's good and bad; as someone else mentioned; it should be obvious. theres the age-old adage (yay, that phrase feels nice on the tongue) that one mans freedomfighter is another mans terrorist. if we look at how much abuse the west has given the world; what right do we have to condemn abuse that we get given?

But I digress. as usual. i should write a book or something

For those of you talking about how the US "cheats" and whatnot, I'd just like to say, there is no cheating at the game of life. =(

I might have a tiny bit of respect for Joolz for trying to help C-D and VAC, but I've got to wonder just how hard he tried, when he offered to help them to counter cheating programs (I don't know for sure, so all o my comments are assumptions). He probably didn't get his way, and decided to release his source code publicly. Sure, Valve and C-D can now create counter-measures by looking at the code, but then again everyone else in the world can use the code and morph it in any way they want, to further bypass anti-cheating programs.

I guess what I really want to say, though, is that in a few years Counter-Strike 2 will be out, this game will be dead, and by that time the US Gov't will have strict laws, forbidding people to cheat on games. They will probably classify it as electronic piracy/fraud/whatever, and slap you with a felony charge. They'll also have little microchips imbedded into our skin, so they'll know our location at anytime. And then they'll create an army of Super Monkeys to invade the entiiire world!

LMAO, are you serious?! Do you know WHY we think certain things are good and bad? Because we are TAUGHT that way. There isn't a universal code of righteousness. Society has taught us that certain things are good, and certain things are bad and should never be done. Technically speaking, the entire world has been brainwashed by those who manage our society.

First of all, I'm not a hacker. I feel that people who use hacks are not men, and are not acting in fitting manner.

I'd like to point out to bret540 that this software is not 'illegal.' Luckily, we live under a government that has yet to outlaw cheating at online games. It's called freedom.

And second, I'll disagree with Joolz about the design of Windows. I have no problem with Windows being designed in such a way as to allow the user to do anything he wants with it. That Windows allows a user to bypass anti-cheat software if he so chooses is a feature and not a bug. Current efforts to lock out the user from the information on his own computer using the 'Fritz' chip is, in my view, dangerous to a free society.

I happen to value my freedom more than I value Counterstrike, as strange as that may sound.
i dont think that's what he was trying to say. The freedom he was talkin about was the fact that one program can modify the memory of another program which i dont think you would like it to be doing.

I agree. He sounds arrogant and not apologetic at all. He's not sorry for making cheats, he's simply too lazy to fight VAC any longer.

He has skills, which I can respect. I cannot respect him though, because he uses his talent to publicly release things that are solely intended to ruin Counter-Strike for others.

How anyone can say that they respect this kid is beyond me. His work has done nothing but hurt the community at every turn. If that wasn't his intention, then the cheats shouldn't have been released to the public in binary form.
this could just be a ploy to give him time to work under the radar. I doubt this is the last we see of him :)
