    You missed the boat there.

It hasn't gone missing, they want to change it so the version they release is different to the version that got stolen.

My question is: They have to remake the third of the code that was stolen? Don't they make backups?!
No Nathan, valve still most likely have the code, its just that with half of the community having seen it, it defeats the point of closed source.

Whats the figure, 1/3 of the source stolen? Would you really want to download 1/3 of the game via steam? -- Ok, lets say its not all at once, but in piecies. By the time they released each bit there is a possibility a new exploit could be released taking advantage of an already updated portion.
Many of us will be downloading the entire game via Steam. Its not really a big deal for them to patch the netcode or even elements of the aim or wallhack prevention code.

Without posting a cheat site, it can be safely said cheats are still widely available for HL and mods (of course including CS) - even with Steam and VAC. Looking around I don't see too many happy customers.
So, whats your point? Valve made an effort with VAC and it has reduced the cheat-rape significantly. It is true that there are still cheats, but they are not as pervasive as before (think OGC7 and OGC8). Lets put some numbers to it: The number of downloads for OGC7.3 were something like 10000. The latest OGC-SE (or whatever they are on) is something like 800.

The point of my comments was that Valve is best served by focusing on that which improves their long-term position. Steam was more important the VAC, and releasing HL2 to the paying public should be more important than some 12 year old whining about getting owned through a wall. Even though people can get around VAC there are fewer cheaters because the punishment for getting caught is MUCH worse than before. Valve's VAC did what CheatingDeath and UA-HLGuard could not do -- provide WON based punishment in the form of long-term bans.

The source-code leak shouldn't require months of delay. Clearly, there are people at Valve who are feeling self-important over this whole thing. They need to think about what missing a whole year of revenue will do their return on investment into the source engine in the first place.

The whole point of developing the advanced engine was that they could write superior products with it. When it gets leaked to everyone else, it makes the most sense to capture as much of the market as soon as you can, before others can incorporate your innovations into their work. Giving the competition a year of free development time with all of your hard work is (to use a gentle word) foolish.

ok lets see why wouldnt it take a long tiem the engine took a few years to make so if u got 1/3 of it leaked it would be good to take so time out and change it and as for other companines stealing it i highly doubt that

Point taken, but this portion is getting way off base of my orignal post.

Where'd you get your stats? (Again this is a bit OT to my original post, but relevant.) I'm not questioning the amout of cheaters here, but the fact that there are still many cheat sites widely available, as well as many cheaters out there. Mind you as well, OGC is all but gone. There are many other types of hacks available.

You feel releasing the game in 2003 is for the better, and I respect your opinion. I don't want to see the game delayed any more than anyone else, but I believe that as far as 'long-term' plans go, this could very well be for the better. As for people complaining of cheaters, that is also questionable as to how many people might completely quit because of this. Granted they did buy the game, but whats to say they would buy future Valve products? I strongly believe PR is much more important than rushing a flawed or exploited game.

ok i wont say nothing negative but the code was leaked. as u may or may not know the code could have been used to cheats which porbly was the hackers reason for doing this. If they didnt change it u would have a new half life full of hacks and when cs would jump over to hl2 it would be full of hacks

What kind of person would do something like this? Who could get joy out of the misery of like a couple million gamers sorrow? I guess its not like life or death or anything, but it bothers me to think someone would dedicate like 3 months of their life to piss people off.

Dude.. you put too much weight on the quotes, how was I supposed to know you referred specifically to cheaters? Anyway, my position is that 1) there would have been high-quality cheats anyway, 2) modifying the code to derail some cheats can't be all that much work.

Other commenters have apparantly taken this literally, but were you sarcastic? If you were, good point! This was indeed not "theft" in the sense that Valve remains in possession of the "stolen" material - the intruder copied it.

Well what *is* the point of closed source? Security? I should hope not. Cheat prevention? Possibly, but how big a difference does it make? Anti-piracy? Naw, the art resources are more desirable. "Newness" of the game? Ok I guess, it may feel "old" in a way if the code has been going around the Internet..
