yeah, actually i give valve major props for doing a much better job since 1.3 to prevent cheaters. I'm not saying that valve isn't doing it's job, but i'm saying that it isn't perfect yet, like some people think, i mean sooner or later, fucking cheaters are going to come out with 1.5 cheats. I think that valve needs to do something about preventing all cheaters, say something that automatically scans your hard drive thoroughly instead of now, like what punkbuster or whatever does. Than, it can really cut down on cheaters. Cheaters exist on almost every single game out there, from starcraft to c&c to return to castle wolf to cs. Cheaters F*CKING MAKE THE GAME GAY!

kagartoe, i had the same problem for quite a bit. haha, i spiked like mad when 1.5 came out for like the first two or three days. It's a bitch ain't it? haha. btw, what kind of system are you running?

i have a AMD XP Athlon chip 1.4 gighertz with 256 MB DDR RAM and a geforce 4 MMX with 128 MB video ram. They way i fixed was prior to entering CS, i just ctrl+alt+delete everything except for systray and explorer. than i just entered CS and everything worked fine. If that still doesn't work, contact your ISP. maybe your isp is ripping you off all of a sudden... i dunno... did you send em hate mail or something? haha =P

Well this whole 1.4-1.5 update just pissed me off....nothing was changed ....the only thing that noticably came out of this update was that i now cant get a server list..i ahve to go to gametiger get an ip then try to connect. and more times then not the server is full with gametiger says tehre is like 10 slots. its just a waste of time to play cs now. i hope valve will fix this crap!

Ah, it's THS... the guy who's fame for missing mailbag posts will be remembered for many generations, heh. :) I've got a few different answers for you, so pick the one you like.



Right now, no, custom models do not work with Steam. The reason is that Steam uses 1 single file as a "cache" file that contains just about all the information the Counter-Strike needs to run (or any other Steam game for that matter). A few other files were left seperate so you could modify them (such as your configs and such). For the most part, they do not want people freely downloading and having access to the original files for everything in Steam, as it's currently still in beta testing, and is free to the public at the moment. (ie, right now, even if you don't own half-life or CS, you can play CS over Steam for free... until 1.6 comes out).



When Steam gets out of beta, I would be willing to bet money that this format will be modified some, and you will either be allowed to place models into folders which would then override the corresponding models in the cache, or the actual files will be availible to those with valid, paid for Steam ID's.



So in short, while you can't use custom models with Steam currently, expect to be able to retain this functionality when it is released as the main system to use.

This is because you don't realize he's not talking about a "26.4 modem" but rather connecting at 26.4 kbps. It's a well known fact that you often connect at a lower speed than the theoretical maximum of your modem. For example, on my 56.6kbps modem, I usually connect at either 50.6kbps or 52kbps, not at the full 56.6kbps. Clear now? Sure doesn't sound like you've been working with modems for all that long, heh. :)

Next, I have to laugh at all the people who talk about how stupid valve is, and in their arguments, use points that reflect just how ignorant they are. People claiming that everyone will have to pay for CS monthly would be a classic example of this. Also people who bitch about Steam, claim to know how it works, and decry it as the distribution platform forged by lucifer himself. :) I've been using Steam for quite a while myself. To be honest, I never bothered installing CS1.4 overtop of my 1.3 install, because I already had a steam install, and this way I could play 1.3 with my podbots if I felt like it, heh. I started using it in the very early beta, when I had a broadband connection. And yes, back then, as far as I could tell it was downloading everything needed just about every time. And it was annoying.



I won't claim to know exactly how Steam works, but here are my experiences with it. In early beta, the downloading was annoying and bugged me. I can't point to a definite update time, because I honestly wouldn't know, as it can update silently. From the get go, cache errors were common, requiring you to redownload everything. But then it started getting optimized or something, because cache repairs would only take a minute or so, and the only slow load times were when playing maps I hadn't played yet.



Now, on my 56k, no broadband, I still use Steam. I used it to get 1.5, and it took me a mere 20 minutes, and that was around 1pm the day it came out. Yes, I know it's not possible to download 7 megs on a 56k in 20 minutes. But you don't need to download nearly so much when it's -only- downloading the parts you need. People whine about Riccochet. Well, with steam, you don't download it unless you subscribe to it (which is free, if you own halflife), so no "wasted" downloading, if you feel that's what it is. No TFC, no DMC, none of it unless you want it. I don't get why it seems to be the same people begging to only download CS, yet rejecting the method that Valve provides for doing just that.



Just on a sidenote... I noticed Steam got some fixes in this latest release as well. I was having problems with it not being able to "remember" my login info... now it works just fine. The only hitch in the download process was that I had to do an "enable cache loading" process for 10 minutes, then shut down Steam, restart, and then repair my cache. Boom, worked fine after that. On a 56k no less. Steam is very viable, in my opinion, and I'm sure that by the time they officially release it, Steam will be even better.



And yeah... I'd bet with the finale one you can play on LAN without authenticating to Steam. Just in case you're all worried about that. Remember... they already told us all that you can still just go buy the games if you want, or have them delivered over Steam, and they'll both work fine and interchangably. Just calm down and relax, everything will be fine. As evil and satanic as many of you seem to think Valve is, they're a kinder, gentler satan than you think they are, and you're gonna be taken care of. Maybe they'll even make the F1 and F2 functionality bindable to other keys, who knows. :)



Thanks Valve, thanks CS-Nation, thanks quieter majority who make the game still enjoyable to play. (Nice 1600x1200 pics, btw, though I was wishing for some AA to smooth 'em up, heh) Dated or not, I love this game.

ok I don't use fucking dailup (what the hell kind of dialup gets under 100 ping anytime). My isp is fine I have three comps running off a router and the others have no problems like this. AzNMaKaVeLi you confirmed my suspicion's I have A very slightly less powerful system then you(Amd xp 1700, 128 megs of DDR ram and a Radeon 8500 with 64 megs of DDR ram.) the problem I think is that our systems are ram hungry.I am going to upgrade my ram to 640 megs. I think this will help. the problem being too many background programs running at the same time.I have only the basics running (F-secure,Zone Alarm Pro,Nostromo game pad prog,Wireless optical mouse prog,key board prog and a system management prog.)I only have around 20 megs left for gaming leaving my vid card to fend for itself.

no problem.. try upgrading to 256 DDR.. if that doesn't work, go for a vid card in the nividia family, the family that makes geforce. right now geforce 4 is hella ass expensive, but geforce 3 with 64 MB Video ram should work fine. btw, this is complicated, but you CAN overclock your vid card, it's just a pain, if you want to try that, it's the least expensive way.

The only reason I didn't get a geforce was that the Radeon was much cheaper.I prevesly owned a geforce 2. On the overclocking matter theres no need to overclock my vid card (I do even have a nice prog for it) 275 megahertz is enough.the ram is the thing holding my system back.

Perhaps it has already been said (I don't want to read all those posts :o ) but the fix to the 'Server Validation Failed' error is to simply open up ports 27015 and 27005 on your router or firewall. It's that easy =)

when i update cs i kill my F1 and F2 bind!!! all my other bind is ok!! so i have to move F1 and F2 to F5 and F6!!! It work now i know F1 do something in the new cs like a exit key!!! wtf we need that for! i just as ease just go to console and type (exit) LOL
