The reason you need a broadband is because you have to download to a cache file quite often I find, and if you were on 56k it would take a long long time. As for the beta it comes with Steam's instant messenger and all the fun server browsing stuff as well as Counter Strike 1.4 beta. In 1.4 they built in a stamina thing in which where you jump once, only once (kinda retarded, it should be at least 2 jumps) then it makes you slow down and walk for a couple seconds. If you have 1.3 you obviously won't be effected by this.

But what exactly are you downloading often? I've heard people saying that Steam offers users to have the game on their hard drive, so is only good for Broadband users? What does THIS mean?

I agree CS has gone so downhill since Valve got their greedy mits on it and 1.4 is just another step towards absolute crap in my opinion. CS was so great in betas 3-7. I remember I couldn't wait to get the next version to see what great stuff had been added, but then Valve comes. Lowers awp damage changes sub machinegun accuracy and general screws the whole game up. Especially from 1.1- 1.3 the "fixed" hitboxes was a huge joke. Full auto is the only way to get a headshot now, but as for 1.4 the whole jumping slows you down would be great if it didn't slow you down when you were walking down steep stairs (like on Aztec). At least there aren't as many BS headshots now I'm just doubting 1.4 will be able to keep the veterans coming back.Comment

Played 1.4 last night.
Couple of things:
1) I wish it was compatible with your custom models and skins because I didn't realize how much those in and of themselves affect your (my) playing style.
I also forgot how much the default models suck - lol
2) The hit boxes seem to be much more consistent and "tight" if that makes any sense?
I was on Assault last night with a couple of clan members and other non-clan, but skilled players and I was at the top of the server for about 10 minutes until more skilled and Clan players came in.
I do fairly well on pubs, but even I could tell the difference when I actually crouched, aimed for the head of an approaching T and just unloaded and nailed him -- As opposed to this 1.3 net code crap where you can be at point blank range, unload, and the guy still kills YOU instead with one shot.
3) The jumping thing.
I have to agree it should be at least two or three jumps minimum before the DoD slow down.
In addition, I also never thought it gave you that much speed. Just made it harder for a guy to kill you if you were within like 10 feet of each other capping off rounds.
4) I love the new spectator modes.
Definitely, first person POV rocks and is very educational for not just noobs, but all level of players to learn how to play better.
I was afraid that the "leaving your body at the moment of death" thing was going to cause a lot of problems of making you leave your body when you could still be alive (only a few shots, but not fatal) -- But I actually like it because there is no question how you were killed and I hope this cuts down on the accusations of cheaters.
6) The main thing I would add to CS 1.4...
Is a guide to internet ediquette included for ALL players that teaches people how to behave on line so the game is more enjoyable for others other than pre-teens and other immature idiots.
Obviously, I'm kidding about number 6... Although, I can dream, can't I?
