Patience and content is what we all must show as we wait out VALVe's problem. It is in fact our fault for causing this problem in the first place and so we have no one else to blame but ourselves. Just wait and before you know it everything will be running smoothly. Until then I will provide you all with some help.

      Trouble Shooting

      ----------------------

Troubleshooting :: Cannot Connect To Steam Servers

"Sorry- unable to connect to a Steam server. Please check your network connections and firewall settings." If you get this message, check your ports. Steam requires that your firewall have the following ports open:

      Auto-updating:

      TCP & UDP - 20

      TCP & UDP - 21

      Game play:

      TCP - 27030 - 27039

      UDP - 27015

Users need to make sure the necessary ports are open in BOTH directions on their firewalls. If your ports are open the Steam server may be down. Go back to the Home Page for the latest info.

      Forum

      -------

      1) Patience

      2) Anti-socialism

It takes me about 6 minutes from when I double click on the shortcut to Steam to get into the Counter-strike 1.6 shell, so you just have to observe #1 above. Be patient. Right after going to the Steam shortcut, and then logging in, it seems to have closed Steam completely (no windows, and the icon isn't in the taskbar), but it takes about 2-3 minutes before the main menu will appear. Once it does, go to Games, double-click Counter-strike.

If you havn't finished dling CS 1.6:

If every time you try to connect it starts to "update" or download CS, but it gives an error or locks up, then go to your Steam/SteamCache/ directory and DELETE the Counter-strike directory.

This is the error this fixes:

      Debug Assertion Failed

      Src\CacheLoaderThread.cpp

      Line: 1171

      (!(eMode != m_eNextMode) || (m_eNextMode == eStop || m_eNextMode == eExit || m_eNextMode == ePause))

For some reason, if the download stops in the middle (steam locks up before it finishes one time), all subsequent attempts to download make it not seem to know where to pick up. It won't resume, and it sees that it started downloading, so it won't try to start again and it just sits there indefinitely (or errors out). Once you delete that directory you will have to restart the download, but you should get it eventually.

Once you have CS 1.6 downloaded (the first time after downloading it'll just go straight in and you can skip this):

If the dots stop moving, you might as well just close it, then press ctrl-alt-del, (task manager for windows xp). You need to make sure that BOTH Steam.exe AND hl.exe are out of the processes tab or when you try to restart steam it will say "it's already running" (for steam.exe) or it will just lock up when you try to run CS (if you don't end hl.exe).

If AT ANY POINT you're not sure if it's doing anything, just hit ctrl-alt-delete (at least in win xp) , and then look at the process threads, and see if hl.exe or steam.exe is taking up cpu and/or the memory is increasing. If it is, then, believe it or not, it's actually doing something, which it eventually will finish (unless infinite loop. then you're **x0red). Just wait it out!!!

I have created my own server on the first try. No problems whatsoever (besides that it took about 2 minutes, bringing the total from 6 minutes to 8 for getting in-game). This, of course, is where point #2, anti-socialism, comes in. Joining someone else's server is impossible as far as I can tell, and so you can pretty much only play by yourself. I might have my roomie DL 1.6 tomorrow and we'll test LAN games to see if that works at all. As for internet servers, some lock up hl.exe, some just hang (but you can still cancel joining), but most take a long time (up to a minute) and then just say "You were disconnected."

This just about covers everything. And by the way, Valve, who decided to change the names for all the weapons in the text menus? Really hurts my head when you stop calling a steyr aug a... STEYR AUG.

      ----------

This junoir memeber has explained this well and I feel that it should solve most problems. So in the end it comes down to one simple thing, patience.

hmm this is getting weird. My pal has the beta and it uses disk space for 423 Mb and status is updating. I have the beta at status Ready to play and it's only 400Mb, so I just want to know how big is your beta and does it work fully ?
