To all of the peeps that think Valve F up'd. You download a BETA program and it dosn't work???? Are you high....thats why its called a beta you fools. If you think Valve is lame then lets look at the facts.

      1. They have opened up their s/w for Development by third parties

      2. They have constantly updated a four year old game

      3. The cost of this game is how much??? Twenty bucks?

        lol

I personally like Steam. I do keep thinking to myself that it is a beta, many things will be fixed, new modifications will be added and such. BUT Steam supposedly was released to the public, why do I say this? read on:

        *Quoted From of Counter-Strike.net*
Steam Beta 2.0 begins today at 3 pm Pacific. The beta is open to the public, anyone can join by downloading and running the 4MB install applet.

For the first few days, this beta will include the coming versions of

Counter-Strike (1.6) and Team Fortress Classic. Further updates to these games, as well as additional content, will be made available to participants throughout the beta.

Steam is a broadband platform for the delivery and management of digital content. More information on Steam and this beta can be found at www.steampowered.com.

The newest version of Counter-Strike (1.6) introduces new weapons (riot shield, FAMAS) a new map (de_airstrip), and more. Take a look at Rizzuh's preview here for new info and changes.

Now to me, this says that it is released to the public.. I wonder why.. It was shoutdown because Steam's current bandwidth was overwhelmed by the amount of publicity that Steam got.

I guess that they were more popular than they thaught.. because the news post after the one quoted above stated:

        *Quoted from of Counter-Strike.net*
The Counter-Strike and Team Fortress communities have maxed out the Steam 2.0 beta servers, resulting in the temporarily suspension of admission to the beta as more content servers are put online. The current Steam content servers offer over 500 megabits of bandwidth, all of which the community is consuming right now.

Anyone interested in hosting a Steam content server should email

biz@steampowered.com. (Content server requirements can be found at www.steampowered.com.)

Those who have already joined the beta are encouraged to continue their participation and submit their feedback.

        -- cliffe
So they were shut down. BUT once again, people still got the "connection" to Steam, through various websites. Yes, some of these programs where frauds, some were virus's. But I guess that some people had to take this risk. Some people might not of cared, having nothing but gaming software on their computer. But some people did not download steam for this reason. I don't know if its just me.. but for a while steam WAS - I REAPEAT WAS released to the public for a short time.

This was quoted from http://www.steampowered.com/forums/show...9&threadid=72 (Steams Forums)

It was a public beta , beta means to expect bugs, delays, network issues and generally not to expect it to be 100% fun all of the time. The previous version of steam had an open beta but was difficult to download so there servers were not nearly hit so hard. They had no way of knowing how hard they would take it. Being a beta they didn't expect, even if it was public, for EVERYONE to download or attempt to download it like it was a patch and to play CS had to have it.

The fact still remains that being a beta this is what it was intended for. By overloading them you helped them with the first test. However there system isn't nor should it be designed to support a hundred thousand players downloading a game at the same time. It is meant for content delivery over time, not a mass burst all at a moment. the system is meant to save us time in the future with smaller more manageable patches that download near seamlessly so you don't see a transition, and to deliver new content for VALVE to avoid distribution costs.

Also for you 56ker's steam has been and still is noted as being BROADBAND only, so for people complaining on it from that point RTFM, don't expect it to be a wonderful content streaming experience.

People have 0 right to be angry at Valve over this. They were trying to give the community a chance to help define the next version of CS and make an open instead of a closed beta which often ends up being very elitist. 80% of those downloading this had no right to do so as they had no intention of treating it as a test by reporting bugs or other issues. People were only in it for the fun, and that was not the point. Those who are angry don't understand that as a test , the overloading of the servers is in fact what the point of it was, to find any problems with the game BEFORE FINAL RELEASE.

To anyone that didn't get the joke, if your main language isn't english, then i understand not getting it. If not, well I guess it's hard to tell exactly what someone meant, when you aren't the person that wrote it. here is the same joke, in a sentence:

... Is that the best we've done as humanity? Make sliced bread?

Now, before this thing gets too off-topic, I believe that Steam is a good idea that just wasn't ready to stop being an idea just yet.

If they did want to incorporate Steam into HL and its mods, they should have picked a better way than something necessary for the life of (insert random percentage here) gamers than a major CS update, I think. Yes, I know this is only CS 1.6 BETA, but Valve should know, they dangle something out here related to CS, and half the *online* world is at it immediately.

It would have been so much easier on everyone if CS 1.6 didn't get released as a "public beta" and Steam was just announced on major HL (and MODs) sites with something explaining it would be needed for 1.7, and people should get it soon.

Yay to run-on sentences and parenthesis!

I didn't read ALL the threads in this article!

This question may or may not have been asked!

If STEAM had those web links to release the beta one hour,

and then they took them off,

How come they put up a page that says:

                        "COMING SOON"

instead of puting up a page saying:

"DUE to the enormous downloading from "rabid hungry CS fans", Steam has suspended it's beta untill further notice!"

                        (Or something like that!)

                        ????

And then I try to post a message on their board and it will not show up on the board!

They never said: "POSTING is suspended untill further notice!"

Why do we all live in a world where "DIRECT COMMUNICATION"

                        is not practiced??
