I guess most ppl complaining dont know a fuck about developping software they just want to play cs 1.6 (yes..I want too) and they dont give a shit about troubleshooting problems. I think complainers should just stfu and be happy this beta test is public, Valve could just have kept it closed with real betatesters who troubleshoot and correctly reports bugs but they decided to release it so everybody could have a sneek peek at the upcoming version.

I'm thrilled that Valve is still adding and adding things into half life where they aren't making a direct profit from it. Not many gaming companies would continue to patch a game as old as Half Life and I'm hoping that more people start to realize what Valve is doing.



Valve can take as long as they want to release a product. Valve can also release absolutely horrible betas of products. You shoulnd't be offended by that since it isn't like you are paying money for it. The tone I've seen from a lot of IRC idiots is along the lines of "GG VALVE HORRIBLE PATCH" and I think luft's article tried to get the fact that it wasn't a patch through their thick clanner skulls. I personally would have suggested using nails instead of words.

(If you haven't come across an idiot like the ones I'm talking about look at comment 30).



What I personally have come across is people being impatient and expecting things when they have given nothing. I don't think anyone should be too upset about a botched release, as this is just a game. I don't think anyone should be upset about the free patch being done later because they aren't paying for it and the longer it takes the higher the chance that the patch will be well done and mostly bug free. I just really wish people would calm down about this whole thing and put what valve is doing into perspective. It's not ass kissing if they are doing something cool enough to deserve the compliments.

Also, its valves fault that the public is going crazy over the beta. If valve had posted another estimation of when the beta would be released and not an exact date their site wouldn't have gotten hammered that day. Another thing they could have done is just tell the content providers to shutdown untill valve recieved more bandwidth that way the content people wouldn't get hammered either. Also, if valve were to release the beta at some day during their estimated time period, and not make a HUGE fricken deal about it (request that all major CS news sites do not post anything about it) then only the people that checked the steam site would get the beta the first day. Then after maybe 4 days or so when the traffic from the first wave of people died down they could ask all the major CS sites to post about it. That way not everyone in the world would get it at once, it would happen over a much longer pieriod of time.



Just thought of something else, maybe the people at the press testing thing thought that 1.6b would be released on that date that valve specified so they thought leaking it would do no harm. Valve should of known that their bandwidth was nowhere near sufficient for all the downlaods that would happen and just updated their damn site for once and changed the release date. Then maybe the people that leaked it would have noticed valve wasn't going to release it on that day and waited longer before they leaked it to the public.

Thats what i thought, but maybe Luft has the crazy bandwidth wasting version of steam2.0 :) The only time i ever had to download anything from steam2.0 was when i first played CS with it.

Here's the reality folks. Steam 2.0 was released, now get this.. by VALVE on the STEAM website. There was a ton of download locations all on STEAMS site on the day that they had been telling everyone in advance, that it was going to be released. We all remember that correct? It was being released that Thursday remember. And guess what, it did get released. And within I'd say, and hour from Valve's posting of it, everyone had already begun downloading it. Once Valve posted it, most major CS sites went and posted links to Valves mirrors. In fact, the only site that hadn't posted any news of this, was .. you guessed it, CS nation! Rizzuh, lord of the Cs nerds, must of been sleeping late due to a night of drunken anal sex with Narby. Anyway, there it was in all its glory, all over the net, like Valve had wanted, since they themselves provided so many download locations. I'm sure many of you remember the page Valve had put up. It was green and had links to major gaming sites who were hosting it for valve like Gamespy.



Problem is, the launch went horribly wrong. They didn't acquire enough bandwidth and that was that. Besides that, the software was a huge resource hog. They closed off the test, because so many people had flooded them. Here's the thing though, Valve themselves never publicly stated anywhere that the problem had been a leak. But rizzuh, (mr. my opinion matters most) wants everyone to believe it was the leak that caused all these problems. Why, I don't know. I think he just loves sucking up to Valve so much, thats its clouded his ability to honestly report on CS related things. Wake the hell up Rizzuh. Weather it was leaked or not, there was no way this software was going to work well. Stop trying to make excuses for Valve, that Valve themselves never even said. THERE NEVER WAS A LEAK for the final time. I wouldn't be surprised if Rizzuh himself wrote this whole rebuttal, and just gave himself a new alias.

The thing LuftWaffle ignores in his rebuttal is that CS has existed as beta for most of it's lifespan. Similar to ICQ, which has been versioned as beta or alpha for as long as I can remember, the community places no meaning on the word "beta".



The word "beta" has been abused by the CS team like so many other developers as a way to leave something in permanent beta status to reduce complaints and eliminate liability. I beleive CS only went 1.0 after Valve got involved (I guess they couldn't package and sell CS Retail in stores if the version had a "b" next to it.)



Suddenly, after years of playing CS betas which was most of the time, a perfect game as beta (seriously, everything after b6.5 was just adding and tweaking, it was as close to 1.0 as ever when it hit 6.5), they suddenly expect the community to take the word "beta" seriously.



I'm not saying the CS guys shouldn't have taken the "beta forever" ICQish approach with their versioning. But if they do, they (and Valve) must realize what the word means (it means "final") to the userbase of the CS product, and not act surprised when the latest "beta" is considered to be the same as all the previous "betas" and fanatically downloaded and expected to work.

Just wanted to say that I wholeheartedly agree with everything that Luft said in his article. He managed to get in every aspect of it that I have been telling others about the Beta Steam release.



Still doen't change the fact that I think Valve deliberately leaked the file, for an excuse to not release it to the thousands who showed interest, but still have enough testers to have a Beta test.

bozer you clearly have no idea what happened. Tell me why the only site bigger than some clan's that had a link to Steam was CS-Central. Did Gamespy, Fileshack, or any other major download "facility" mirror it? I'll give you the short answer: no.



I'd imagine the webmaster of the biggest fan site, hosted by the official site, would have a much more valid opinion than a news poster for the only site that mirrored a leaked file. I like how you had it hours before Valve even mentioned you.



Who exactly gave you the file? Oh that's right you mirrored it because you were invited to a playtest. I'd like to see your invitation to the next version's.
