as for calling me a loser, I think you are a bigger one than me, because you are simply falling behind narby, like every other person who has posted in this debate, without giving the matter much thought. hell, you even write in your post that you support narby because he made aztec
Actually, if you want to get technical, he didn't say he agreed with narby's point of view, he's just stating that he has more respect for him because he feels that narby's contributed to CS a little more than you. Nothing personal man, but if you want to carry your argument, don't try to play on others words when you expect people not to make assumptions with yours.

i never said he did. I said he was supporting narby without question.

"narby's contributed to CS a little more than you."

oh, and of course that means he must be some kind of genius, right? that is the kind of thing I can't stand.

"Nothing personal man, but if you want to carry your argument, don't try to play on others words when you expect people not to make assumptions with yours."

i wasn't playing on words I was responding to the message he was sending, which was basically "you r a loser cuz u disagree with narby"

We are getting off-topic, but yes, it is. Lol, strangely enough, I'm Canadian...maybe we have a different view of the meaning of "loyalty".

"Anyway, I think the author is talking about fanaticism, not loyalty. "

that is what I was saying, except everyone here calls it loyalty to make them sound less pathetic

"I'm Canadian...maybe we have a different view of the meaning of loyalty"

im just trying to make people realize that you cannot be loyal to cs. you can like it, and you can become a fanatic, but you are never loyal to it. the problem is that people think being loyal to something means liking that thing a whole lot. but being loyal is different. for example, a dog is loyal, even if its master beats it. the dog may not like its owner, but it is still loyal. see what I'm saying? you dont have to like something to be loyal to it.

Exo I agree with you in that CS has bred a loyalty never-before seen on this scale. I mean sure people are loyal to other games in the same fashino as they're loyal to CS (For one, I've been playing Freespace 2 for over three years now, MOO2 and Starcraft ever since they came out, and I still go back to Quake 2 every once in awhile.) I'd say that CS definitely has produced a special kind of "loyalty" considering its longevity and continuing growth.

it wasn't cs it was the community. the fans are loyal to the community, not the game itself.

He never said that he "supported" narby, he said that he "respected" narby more. As for narby's contributions to cs and how that makes him a genius, that eludes me. I never said that, nor did I agree that made you a loser. While I appreciate Aztec as much as the next guy, it has no bearing on this debate in my opinion. Don't try to put words in my mouth, either, if that's what you are trying to say. Like I said earlier, I think that you both had valid points concerning "loyalty".

Mmm I disagree with you, I think that fans are "loyal" (whatever that may mean) to the game, and this "loyalty" is a response to the game. I would think that fans of Counterstrike make up its community; but the community can't respond to itself with "loyalty." In your words, then, the community would be loyal to itself, which makes no sense in this context. The community in question exists because of Counterstrike and therefore the fans can't be loyal to themselves.
do you truly understand what that definition is saying? let's look at each key word.

                    af·fec·tion Pronunciation Key (-fkshn)

                    n.

A tender feeling toward another; fondness. See Synonyms at love.

Feeling or emotion. Often used in the plural: an unbalanced state of affections.

A disposition to feel, do, or say; a propensity.

                    Obsolete. Prejudice; partiality.

                    at·tach·ment Pronunciation Key (-tchmnt)

                    n.

The act of attaching or the condition of being attached.

Something, such as a tie, band, or fastener, that attaches one thing to another.

A bond, as of affection or loyalty; fond regard.

                    feeling--

Perception by or as if by touch; sensation: a feel of autumn in the air.

The sense of touch: a surface that is rough to the feel.

An act or instance of touching or feeling.

Vulgar. An act or instance of sexual touching or fondling.

The nature or quality of something as perceived by or as if by the sense of touch: "power steering that seems overassisted, eliminating road feel" (Mark Ginsburg).

Overall impression or effect; atmosphere: "gives such disparate pictures... a crazily convincing documentary feel" (Stephen King).

Intuitive awareness or natural ability: has a feel for decorating.

none of those seem to be the kinds of things associated with cs. loyalty is something deep. it is not just some shallow preference, and that is why I was pissed when he used it. loyalty is something hard to find, and hard to create. these people are just addicted

so you are saying counter-strike falls under the same catorgory as, say, Christmas? I doubt it. cs is game, or an addiction. it will never be deserving of loyalty, because it has no meaning. it is just a thing, like a plant or a fishing rod.
I don't follow you here, pablo, perhaps you can clarify for me. (no sarcasm intended.) First you utilized dictionary definitions to explain the component parts of the definition of loyalty, and then you defined loyalty on your own by using what I'd say is ambiguous and subjective terminology.

Then, I don't understand why you ardently object to the definition of CS as a custom because it's not on the same level as Christmas. While a computer game doesn't hold the same gravity as the celebration of Christ's birth, I don't see why the two couldn't concievably be in the same category yet have different magnitudes of importance or "gravity."

In addition, on what grounds do you say that CS has no meaning? I've found it has great meaning as time for fellowship and fun between friends, or even complete strangers. You're equivocating CS to a plant or fishing rod before you even define "meaning" or "thing." I know these are probably completely obvious definitions to you, but as I can't read your mind could you clue me in please?

Ah, I tend to agree with you here. I think that most people who say that they are loyal to CS (the game) are indeed talking about CS (the community). In CS's case, the biggest captivating part of it is the human interaction in the game. I don't think that too many people would continuously play in an empty server for hours on end just to play Counter-Strike. Then again, there are some pretty strange people out there, so I guess you never know...

                      Let me ask you this...

Do you think that CS would be as popular as it is/has been if it were a single player game? Would you have kept on playing if it were a one man show?

Depending on your answer, it will decide where you stand. If you continue to play the game because the game is cool by itself, then you would say that you are loyal to the "game". If you are still playing because you are against/with other people in an attractive gaming enviroment, maybe have even made some friends there, then you believe you are loyal to the "community".

                            Christ is this still going.

I'll reply tomorrow, it's 7:30am and I need to sleep.
"You can be loyal to anything, if you buy a lot of coke you can be said to be loyal to that brand. If you watch the simpsons every week you are a loyal viewer to the show."

WRONG. According to you, you can be loyal to a piece of sh*t, a used car, one of your pubic hairs, etc...

If you watch the simpsons every week, that does not mean that you are loyal to the show. It means you like the show, or enjoy the show. You can't be loyal to it, because it's a tv show.
I still don't think you're grasping the nature of language. Loyaty comes in a shitload of forms. We've gone over this about 3 times already.

You CAN be loyal to a particular brand or TV show. If I love my fax machine, I feed it ink regularly and hug it late at night, you can say i'm loyal towards my fax machine. Stupid, yes, but still true.
narby was just being a cheap bastard and attacking the weakest part of my argument

edit: by that I mean, I dissed the author, and narby said I was a fool because he thought I said sports did not exist 300 years ago. that is what triggered this whole thing
Let's try and stick to the facts. I never said you were a fool, I simply disagreed without on a particular point.

Attacked the weakest point of your argument? For that point you made it was the argument, not the weakest part. You made a point, which I disagreed with and gave evidence to support my reasons.

You're still acting obnoxiously. I'll be back tomorrow.
