Top Ten Reasons Pro Gaming Sucks

Esports is the perfect definition for the computer gaming genre. That way people who think it's a sport have the word there, but there's a distinct line separating it from the NHL, NFL, NBA, MLB, etc.

Amusing article. Unfortunately, there's a bit of confusion about a lot of points, and he seems to be trying to prove something and yet disproves it half the time.



Most of the points could be equally applied to a regular "sport" that he would accept. Let's take a random example.

Rules are Inconsistent

One thing all sports have in common is consistent rules. Sure, there are plenty of small variations and only professionals adhere to all the "official" rules, but the basics are always the same.

Acceptable maps, time limits, team size, kill total, how many rounds you play ... everything, it's all over the place. There's no such thing as uniformed scoring, no official rulebook, and there's very little consistency.

Let's now apply Basketball instead of a game like Counter-Strike in here, and see what happens.



The official rules may be 5v5 full-court, etc... you know what they normally are for the NBA.



However, when we're playing street ball, we might be playing 3v3 half-court, call your own fouls, on a 9' hoop so we can dunk (so I can't quite dunk 10' hoops... shut up), playing by 1's, and winners get ball. Instead of timed halves, we might just play to 20 points.



Oh no! Basketball's rules are flexible in different circumstances! This must mean it isn't a sport!



No, the fundamental play of Basketball is always the same. Some factors can vary in the different circumstances people play in, but this doesn't invalidate the underlying consistency of the gameplay.



Anyway, then you have the whole aspect of an eSport versus a traditional sport, etc... but there's no point in getting into all that for the 50 millionth time here on CSN. Amusing read, a few good points and some funny pictures, even if I don't think he fully understood what he was trying to prove, or even the very nature of competitive online gaming.

I don't consider those sports either. I consider them "fun". Sports are fun, but they're also a good work out.

Excuse me while I work up a sweat doing some Curling. That broom sweeping action is intense! Most people don't work up a sweat doing professional diving, either, but I suppose you could never prove that, as they come up all wet.

I'm sure Jonathan Wendell gets all embarrassed as he drives up in his brand new car that he won and casually mentions the additional tens of thousands of dollars he's won. I'm not saying it's a practical goal for making a living, but then again, neither is football for the vast majority of people who try to go pro.



Anyway, I honestly don't see playing games for a living as any less worthwhile than, say, being an actor. There's quite a few "entertainment" occupations in this world, and many of them serve no other useful purpose. That doesn't mean that we should mock everyone who entertains us, or alternately, like our man Dimitri here, mock everyone who enjoys a particular form of entertainment.



One final thought, to the many people on here who have called others "nerds" or "geeks" or claimed others "don't have a life." You're posting these opinions on a comments board for a computer game. In other words, any attempt by someone on here to claim themselves to be somehow "cool" by bashing others is a fucking joke.

But that's all it is. A computer video game. Not a sport. Not a lifestyle. Not a cult. Just a video game. And that's how CS should be treated.



You shouldn't take quotes out of context like mine. I was clearly talking about talent and great physical fitness, not sexuallity. You should also follow your own advice about not bashing and not call me a freak either.



Football is a lot more practical than CS. A majority of those who play in highschool have a goal of getting scholarships for college. Not to make it pro. And of those who make college I doubt many of them think they will make pro. So I find sports like football and soccer to be very practical in the sense that they can help provide for a good future.
