hmm...that's true...so? at least it's not getting any worse...i mean...beta 1 was pretty bad



7. Online Leagues Don't Work

I dunno...CAL seems to be working pretty well...that is if u ignore their bad admins who punish teams for forfeiting during the preseason...but CAL is still a quality league that is working so far.



6. Pro Gamers Have No Personality

When was the last time you saw a pro golfer with personality? at least we go wild when we win at a LAN event...i mean tiger woods...he gets these pathetic little claps...whoopie.



5. There's No Mainstream Appeal

say that to the millions of cs players who play the game daily...

there's no mainstream appeal because the mainstream hasn't been exposed yet! duh!



4. Rules are Inconsistent

not really...i mean CAL has pretty established rules, and once you get to the professional level, all the rules are pretty much the same.

so? all the other leagues suck cept cal...and the real professional aspect comes from LAN play anyway

I was going to write a big rant about this but I'm at work and want to go home so you only get a little one.



Why the hell do people care? What posseses someone to announce the demise of e-sport because they don't like it? Kevin Bowen sounds like my dad who's dumbfounded that video games progressed beyond Space Invaders because he thought it was so stupid. "Beep beep beep! Why don't you go outside and do something constructive like play baseball!?" As if anything was more boring than baseball. If it weren't for the beer baseball games would really suck, but nobody is going around announcing the demise of baseball.



Yes, "e-sports" are not really sports, but neither is chess and people have been competing in that for thousands of years, often for quite a lot of money. Yes, gamers are not traditional atheletes, but I would argue that neither are bowlers or pool players and they still get fairly wide media coverage.



There are problems with e-sports the way they are now, but that doesn't mean that they are insurmountable. Just because you don't have a solution for a problem doesn't mean that there isn't one.



So stop being a hater. Nobody is asking you to like it, but obviously enough people do for it to be viable in the short term, which may be enough to solve the problems and make it viable in the long term.



The long version was a point by point deconstruction of Bowen's argument and probably doesn't belong in the comments anyway.



And flame me if you want, but if you think that e-sports are such an emmense waste of time I don't know why you would even bother.

i absolutely agree with this article, "pro gaming" is far too serious for something like a video game, if you're thinking that they consider chess a sport and that for that reason you consider this (ridiculous) culture of pros playing at organized lans for more money then some win in a whole month- a sport, well maybe we should reconsider chess as a sport, after all they were not accepted in the Olympics.

Out for kill counts? No, it's a little bit more of a team game when you're competing for money with a TEAM, that the kills don't even matter. Deathmatch? Ya ok, there's absolutely NO strategy when it comes to CPL matches, they just buy AWP's and run around shooting each other. And for saying 'nub' how would you know? I doubt you've EVER seen a pro-gamer in a pub in your CS life.
