i get that too with my Nvidia geforce4 ti4200 and it's damn annoying. That bug is unrelated to cards i guess, but the good news is that it is fixed in CS 1.6 with the new console overhaul.

How do you get rid of it? It seems to load fine the first time after a fresh restart, then the next time fails miserably.

It solves the problem of alt-tabbing out of a game and getting a black screen when I return to the game

Been there since at least 3.4 ( so around 5 months!)

        9800 pro here.

OMG I am so incredibly pissed right now. I returned my 9600pro 128MB card yesterday because of poor performace in cs. I thought it just wasn't gelling with my rig. I e-mailed sierra for some feedback and they gave me some bullshit solution. I KNEW it had to be a driver problem but I returned my card anyhow. Oh well, i'll grab another Radeon after some HL2 numbers come out.
the 3.7 drivers dont fix much with cs, 1 thing if im correct and its just a little screenshot bug fix

Its nice to be updated when new drivers are released, I don't usually go to the manufacturers website and look.

The NVidia drivers being updated on August 13th wasn't reported on here?

And where does it say that HL2 is optimized for Radeons?

              edit

(then again the only reason the ATI drivers are being reported on is because there was a problem with them. Maybe thats why the NVidia drivers aren't reported on.....)

at least ati doesnt cheat to get better 3dmark scores, the fx series blew completely because of this, ati havent ever had a line of drivers that sucked as much as nvidias fx series

The FX 5900 is able to outpace the Radeon 9800 PRO in all relevant benchmarks and can reclaim the performance throne for NVIDIA. The card offers unrivaled FSAA speed combined with very good anisotropic filtering image quality and performance, thanks to the new Detonator FX driver
                    Says so here

And they do their benchmarks on games.

Does any of you ATI users know why some computers drops to 20fps in cs when there are lots of things that shouldn't be drawn like behind walls? It's a really annoying problem on my cousin's computer and there seems to be no real fix or known cause.

quit flaming the cards. they are both very good. performance is almost the smae.. you wont notice the diff with a 5900 or 9800 unless u have fps monitor on.

And let's not forget, it's the developers who are responsible for deciding the graphical basis.

no offense or anything but thats just plain wrong, its all documented too, to the best of my knowledge a search of "ati drivers mipmap cheat" would probably reveal screenies and all. skimmed the thingy while waiting for. hmm what was i waiting for.. oh yeah, saturday

A test system with NVIDIA GeForce FX 5900 Ultra and the 44.03 drivers gets 5806 3DMarks with 3DMark03 build 320. The new build 330 of 3DMark03 in which Detonator FX 44.03 drivers cannot identify 3DMark03 or the tests in that build gets 4679 3DMarks â€" a 24.1% drop.

Futuremark's investigations reveal that some drivers from ATI also produce a slightly lower total score on this new build of 3DMark03. The drop in performance on the same test system with a RADEON 9800 PRO using the CATALYST 3.4 drivers is 1.9%. This performance drop is almost entirely due to 8.2% difference in the game test 4 result, which means that the test was also detected and somehow altered by the ATI drivers. Futuremark crew is currently investigating this further.

According to this, Nvidia cheated alot more.

I read up on a bunch of other things, and it turns out ATI admits to "cheating" but they were really just optimizing their drivers for the program, as they would for games.

I also read in the same post, that nvidia did not provide such a calm response, and instead blamed the makers of 3d marks for making an unfair benchmark.

So, are they saying that the benchmarks were more biased to ATI cards? Hmm, maybe so.

                              Probably because ATI > nvidia.

Oh yeah, *cough athlon > intel cough*

hate to break it to the user above but if your monitor is only running at 60 hz then nothing you do will make it show more FPS. Vsynch just synchs full frames to each fram of video, hence preventing sheering. If you turn it off your just seeing multiple frames per pass, but still only getting 60 FPS technically, its just those frames are multiple levels of composited ass.
