Bottom line....all you need is a "decent" cpu/graphics card/connection and your sorted for playin CS while getting respectable reg/fps.But in adition to this,if you got a shit hot sound card on top of that your ready to pwn

Goto www.schroet.com and check out the members section, think if you havent already you may be surpised to know that all sK | use 480x600 res only....

The point being that "yes" i do think graphics at least to me are important to an extent, but in my oppinion a good sound is more important in CS.

I honestly don't think having an amazing sound card is so important when compaired to say, having a decent net connection or a good graphic card (though to be honest, so long as you can stay above 30FPS it'll be fine). Hell, sound is pobably the one thing that you don't need to worry about. I know I've got a really crappy sound card, but I can still play fine so long as I use my headphones and not my speakers. And I don't get why alot of you are going on about needing some ultra-fast machine to play CS on properly either; I'm only on a 1.8Ghz Celeron and CS is fine for me. Sure, I'd love something a tad faster, and better graphic and sound cards would help (currently I've only got some crappy intergrated graphic card, which can justmanage 40FPS at 640 res - but it's still good enough for me. Plus I'm too cheap to go out and buy a better card), but I don't think they're vital. As for what mouse to use..... pretty much anything that is semi-decent is fine really. No need for optical or whatever at all, and same goes for 5-button ones - it's good to have, but not vital. I'd say the only thing that really impacts your playing ability when it comes to your mouse, is having (or not having) a wireless mouse, I find wireless ones help alot.

Okay, tnone of the above made much sense I know.... I'll just get me coat....

Ok, IMHO its cpu. Previously I used to attempt to play CS with a P200. =) It was a complete joke. But now, with a 1.2 Ghz Athlon Majiffy, and the rest of the PC unchanged, it is sooo much better! I no longer get 2fps as soon as more than 3 people are on the screen...

cpu/vid card? don't think so... comparing a 1 Ghz duron with a p4 3ghz, or a GeForce 3 with a Radeon 9800, you won't notice any difference in CS. It's the goddam HL engine anyway! Sure you won't play well on a 486 nor a 2 meg gfx card, but who still has these to play anyway.

The sound card, while it does give it's advantages, isn't really useful without good speakers or headphones. I'll suppose it's still better than the above. But nowadays you don't need the $500 external sound card thingamajig to listen to some footsteps.

Your mouse/pad are also very important for high precision. A dirty ball-mouse with 2 buttons isn't going to give you the same precision as a boomslang or a mx500. In fact, most mice, dirty or not, won't come nearly as precise as an mx500.

This poll forgot the internet connection. Pinging also gives an advantage.

kind of a silly poll if you really think about it.

-With a shitty CPU (pentium 1) your going to get crappy FPS and play like ass.

-With a shitty video card (tnt 1) your going to get crappy FPS and play like ass.

-With a shitty mouse (e-machines ball mouse) your going to have crappy aim and play like ass.

-With a shitty sound card you wont be able to hear people coming but you will do fine on a pub seeing as nobody pays attention to sound on pubs + the other team always rushes the same way anywhay.

That is incorrect. First of all, it's 640x480 resolution. Second, a couple of them use 800x600. Hah, i win.

640x480 is the best to use anyway IMHO...... that way, when someone types something it's big enough for you to quickly read without totally distracting you from the rest of the screen, and same goes for things like the cash counter, round timer etc. 800x600 is okay too, but really any highier then that and you'll probably end up dead from trying to read people's messages if you're on a 17" or smaller screen (I'm on a 15" screen and anything about 800x600 is near impossible to read. I've found it's hard on 17" screens aswel)

I use a 17" monitor and I run Counter-Strike at 1152x864 in a Window (desktop is set at 1280x1024). I found a larger and fatter font for Counter-Strike, so I can actually read the stuff. It works quite well and I always get 100 FPS.

                      1) I never said it was totally impossible to read, I just implied that it is harder to read while still remaining focused on the game. It's alot easier to read text on 640 res and still be able to tell what's going on then it is on a much highier res.

                      2) Yes, the CS hud is lame.... though frankly if you're trying to imply I'd have trouble with HUDs from games like Unreal Tournament, TimeSplitters1/2, Deus Ex and other nortoriously complex HUDs, then I can assure you that you are wrong.

                      3) "Are u blind?" + "n I wear glasses" - oh the irony of it....

4)I really must stop being such a bastard like this and list every single point.

I know a lot of you guys really love proving things on CSN "wrong," but the poll isn't silly at all. It's not which do you need to play CS, it's which gives you the biggest advantage. Obviously a playable setup is needed to do anything, but we're asking you to choose which you think of all of those will help the most if you could spend extra money on it. LOL THIS POLL SUX WHAT IF YOU HAVE CUSTOM MODELZ THEY LOOKS DIFFERENTINGS? ? ?? ? WHATS??????

Perhaps we need to just think a little bit more before coming out with the pitchforks and torches looking for someone to lynch. Now go crawl back into your bomb shelters clutching onto your U.S. Rebel magazine, freaks.

Its opinion for christs sake. Just drop it. Thats why its a poll, to see what the majority of the people "think" the most important factor to playing to your maximum potential in CS. ;/

i'm not trying to piss on the poll i just think its to generalized. if you have a pentium2 then obviously getting a new CPU (and motherboard) is going to give you the biggest advantage. if you have a shitty ball mouse, there's your answer. it varies from setup to setup. i voted CPU though because the difference between a good cpu and an "ok" cpu is usually 100fps.

Are you on crack? You mean to say you can't notice the difference between 27fps and 100fps? Its not that the human eye thing is true etc, there are so many theories of 24, 27, 60 etc and i really don't care. But the fps on a pc is different. Imagine if in real life the world refreshed 27 times per second instead of infinity. Thats what im talking about.

human eyes do not work in frames per second, thats discrete sampling. eyes sample the images CONTINUOUSLY! not in discrete samples per time poeriod. SO, stop saying 'humans can only see x fps', you make yourselves sound uneducated.

abotu resolution, higher resolution, you see more detail on the game screen, simple as that. i prefer to see my enemies as furthest away as i can, hence i use a high resolution. if u have a pathetic monitor, thats your problem.
