Max Payne is just about the only single player game that has had some mods floating around it for a while...
Unless I'm mistaken, Thief has many, and I'm probably stupid, isn't it a SP game?

Besides that, keep up the great CPs.

I liked the final analogy about watching a good movie alone or an OK one with friends. Summed up the whole multiplayer experience very well.

Now, someone explain the pun of the news item, because apparently I'm not geeky enough... D:

Well we all know what Sim City is. It's a game where you build a fake community. Get it yet? Blame rizzuh, not me.

same here as rizz i think i won't be too impressed about CZ cuz hl2 is coming out and also its graphics are that impressive....just a little boost. And also, its more like sof2. HHAHAHA more impressed about hl2 though

I am thinking the community will be split big time. I'm not sure what the modders plan to do, but pretend the mods CS and DoD are trasferred on to HL2. Well, you can obviously expect some cool Led Zeppelin old school guy to stick with the first HL version, since 1.6 just came out. Therefore, it will be split. I sure hope the modders transfer on their games to HL2 because I'd really like to see natural selection with HL2 graphics.

The news post on Planet Half-Life today makes it look like HL2 is gonna get a co-op mode either at launch or very soon afterwords which just rocks as far as I'm concerned because I think co-op should be a permanent feature in first person shooter multi-player the same way deathmatch is. I would rather watch a good movie with my friends then an ok one.

Funny how I was going to come down here to the comments section and say how I didn't like the last analogy.

You are saying that Counter-Strike is an OK movie, and that HL single-player is a great movie. Continuing the movie analogy, I think they are both great movies. I think CS was a monster multiplayer game that used some of the right features and hit at the right time to (and here is the key) to the right platform. The platform was Half-Life, which was revered as the Messiah of the FPS game. It truly was a great game, and the amount of press it received helped get it out the door to millions. And then of course, free counter-strike afterwords.

I'm still confused why large game companies can't make good multiplayer games, but one small man can.

(There are exceptions I know... I just didn't think rizzuh answered his question.)

I think it goes deeper than that. Fact is that some producers do not even try to make a 'proper' multiplayer game. I use inverted commas because the definition may vary, but I think the general accepted use also involves community. Thus we are back at the beginning, which is what makes this topic and this Counter-Point issue a great one.

So why is it that "multiplayer is easily dominated by amateurs and single player is dominated by professionals"? I still don't understand why the fact that rizzuh would "rather watch an OK movie with some friends than a great one all alone" exemplifies anything besides that rizzuh likes to make fun of B movies with his buddies ala MST3K.

I do understand why game makers don't make good multiplayer (let the kiddies do it and it's less production costs and serves for good PR ("multiplayer action available as a FREE online download!!!")), I just think it was a ass-backward concluding analogy.

well...the only question i have about HL2 is about the present state of CS... what will happen once HL2 comes out ... will the old CS just die off ?? or will people still play it because they somehow messed up the new CS ... yea i look forward to playing HL2 and even its multiplayer ..but i like CS ... i want to be damn sure that CS just isnt going to fade away into a mod that is "kinda" like CS but just doesnt have the same feel ... oh well time will tell

So true, so very true. Natural Selection has the community CS lost IMO. Alone the fact that they realized individual scores shouldnt be showed. Now if they'd just get a decent tech tree, one NS game is exactly like the last nowadays.

I can't wait to see the group who decides to translate Valve's entire single-player from Half-Life into the HL2 engine.

You know it will happen. Just thinking about redoing that whole campaign...yowza. That will take a LOT of time. And a lot of patience to do right.
I hope it's not the mod team that feels inclined to release 50 betas instead of just one perfectly fine version. I don't want to play through Half-Life singleplayer 50 times with the first few being unplayable and slowly getting better. They should just release it once then release like one or two patches after that(or maybe tweaks).

I've played the Matrix lobby in so many different Max Payne mods and they aren't bad. The Kung Fu mod is fun also.

If you didn't like the original Max Payne then you wouldn't like any of the mods of course. I loved the original Max Payne though. Most single player games I only play for like an hour at the most at a time but Max Payne I would play for hours without realizing it. Being a quicksave whore didn't really take away from my enjoyment of it though, heh.
