Morrowind has great community and it is a single player RPG. So don't jump to conclusions so fast. I played many great signle player games, like Thief 1\2, SS2, DN3d, Planescape: Torment, BG1\2, HL 1 and I gotta say, I am glad I spend $50 on them, they are worth it. Only multiplayer game I had one in with friends was CS.

Counter-Strike 1.6 is going to get a huge, huge, huge bitchfest in the competitive community.
But I don't want to bitch. I want the 1.3 jumping to come back. Hence, I have to bitch to make myself feel better.

Rizzuh, if 1.6 puts an end to saverounds, more power to it. I just hope the new guns aren't so different that it changes strats by 900000%. I'll take something like... 26.235879% different before I bitch. That's not even an exact figure... it could be 26.235876% even. I just don't know, I'm crazy like that.

I did the same thing with this beta that I did with the 1.4 beta... I played it, realized how gay the jumping was, then went back to 1.3 till 1.4 officially came out. I played 1.6, realized how laggy it was, then went back to 1.5 where I will stay until 1.6 comes out and the bitching commences.

i dunno, but i think that every time a new update comes out, ppl just bitch, but then. what can they do about it? They can either stop playing Counter-Strike or live with it. So to me, I think that the bitching is pointless, but then again, it just feels good to bitch at something sometimes =/

Cs is so huge for a few reasons:

it's free on the net (well, started that way)

you can play it on nearly ANY pc out there

it's a "pick up and play" game, not that much learning involved.

Editing the engine is the same as editing quake 1 (more or less..) so people "transfered" to the engines fairly quick.

The hl community is "huge" because there's cs, not that many mods out there are as large, so there's not a HL community but a cs/ns/dod community..

Now, don't think just because it's half-life, that the sequel will have this massive community from the get-go, this is an entirely new engine. The source engine will need to be learned properly till we get some good mods out there. I'm sure it'll be a good game, but doom III isn't a single player ONLY game.. it will contain mp modes. And I'm sure that there'll be a community there too. Remember, doom has a longer history than Half-life does by far, so the "old timers" as I had one person call me (hell, i'm 23!) will see doom III as "returning to the roots"

I remember someone talking one time at work about how "this game has this huge following, and this game didn't etc..etc.." when in reality they both had a large following, he just wasn't "part" of that other fan base, so he didn't know exactly what he was talking about. Doom, and the Id game lineage has a massive following, go to polycount.com and take a gander at all the models made for q2, and q3.. I'm sure they'll be a lot of models for doom III as well.

Just cause there's "more" mods doesn't mean it's better either.

I'm intrigued to see what modders do with the source engine, but I have a feeling it'll be a while till we see anything "big".

but either way, i'll play any game/mod as long as it's fun

Halflife 2 will have a fucking massive community from about from about midnight of the day of it's release, because that'll be about when everyone, who like me, buys it on the release day, will get the urge to tell someone, anyone, everyone, how good it is. So they'll flood online and start talking, and bingo, instant community. It's how it worked for me and everyone in the Quake 2 clan I was in when the original came out. People bought it, played it, came online and enthused about it.

Single player communities tend to be people discussing things about the game, talking over fondly remembered moments, remembering cool things they did, etc. Multiplayer tends to be about HOW to play the game. It's comparing oranges to apples looking at the HL2 community vis a vis our own, we play a mpfps, it's a spfps, they are different genres these days guys. The mods will engender a totally different community, and people will go back and forth between them, they're linked, but they are seperate.

As for 1.6, well damn. I wasn't part of the community before 1.4, i started playing just before 1.5, and you're not really a member of the community til you start seeing what a large section of it thinks, like reading fan pages on it for instance :P, so I have no idea if the bitching it's engendering is regular, but what's to complain? The valve guys aren't going to screw with play mechanics just to fuck us over, they have reasons for the changes they make.

CZ will probably suck. but most of us will get burnt copies anyway, so why do we care? :)

As for mods for HL2... Team Fortress 2 and Counter-Strike 2 will be among the biggest and yes CS2 is in development.. I've been playing since the game was first released retail I was the fifth person in line at the local gamestop.. So yes i've played through five versions and everytime a new is released people bitch about this and bitch about that and some even like some of the changes.. CZ looks promising but as the release date becomes pushed back everytime we turn around im leaning towards Halo on the pc.. maybe with the release of HL2 we will see a new DOD mod....

a few years ago i was desperately looking for "multiplayer online games" and came across counter-strike. i downloaded it (v1) and nicked half-life off a mate and begun the addiction.

                      i haven't played half-life for more than 20 mins.

what attracts me to games is the team-aspect, and hl seemed so much like a one-person-saves-the-world kind of thing. it's why i didn't like doom, and didn't like duke nukem. (although i accept maybe i didn't give HL enough of a chance).

i will buy HL2 and i will definitely play it. having spent hours trying to download the 500 odd meg video, and seen that there is a team-work aspect to it (with supposedly decent AI), i want to give it a go.

back towards the "community" topic, i don't really feel part of the cs community, and don't really want to be. if only to be publicly labeled as 'lame', a 'newbie' or a cheat, it's not something i want to be heavily involved in.

but for this past year, the only internet access i've had is through work. no counter-strike since last summer.

and i find myself checking c-s.net and reading csnation every day. (i've actually been a bit peeved that crossfire disappeared, but the articles here are just the same).

i even paid to be a csnationalist.

i guess i just appreciate all the time and effort people put into creating the beast that is cs by all the developers and the mega-fans like rizzuh and asspennies, and i'm quite proud to know of the existence of something so huge (..from afar) when alot of my friends would only look confused if i asked if they'd ever played it.

i've been through 10 releases and i don't think anyone bitched about beta 7. beta 7.1 added the APC on siege for hilarious results.

good times. btw yes people are going to hate 1.6, not as much as they hated 1.4 though.

bit more on topic. Valve is a smart company even if they did make something like steam, and you can count on CS2 or TF2 shortly after HL2 is released. They aren't going to let this big hyped community just sit there and dwindle off after completing HL2 SP.

True enough, although you could make a similar statement about Return to Castle Wolfenstien "retruning to the roots" of Wolfenstein 3D. The game itself failed to really recall that community (in size and popularity) because it didn't deliver at the same level (of innovation or gameplay). I'm just retreading old ground in essence, but HL2 and Doom 3 will need to raise the bar as high as their forfathers breakthroughs did than rely on their past market dominance for a vital community.
