I wouldn't care if I was booted because of an automatic update, as long as the update stops the cheats from ruining our gaming, I'm all for it.

Shooting them would lead to legal problems.. so let zimzap do it.

But couldn't Valve/Sierra sue the makers of cheats? I thought it was somewhere in the Eula and Terms of Agreement.

It's totally legal, they can't sue OGC team.

I'm not a lawyer, but I believe that they might be able to sue the hackers and win. It might set a precedent but Valve has a legitimate right. Valve created and sold a game. People bought that game and created mods for it. I believe that you need to buy some copyrights or receive some type of legal permission from Valve; I might be mistaken so correct me if I'm wrong. Now the hackers are tampering with Valve software without permission.

I might be completely wrong, but it would be interesting if Valve sued the hackers.

The cheats are non profit using open source code. Most of the cheat makers are probably under 12 anyway.

Besides, even if legal action were feasible, Valve/Sierra/whoever buys Vivendi wouldn't spend the extraordinary amount of cash required to attempt to set precedent and prosecute people for coding cheats for an engine nearing the end of its life cycle (that Valve's already still pouring money into after four years). If they're faced with a similar situation upon release of TF2/CS2/et al, that's another matter.

                    =FaW= Boba Fett:

The server was running HLGuard 1.01. Would there be any major advantages if I told the server owner to install 1.07? Would it make a difference?

The EULA says cheats aren't allowed, so they're violating their user agreement, which makes playing the game copyright theft. Since they're actually not violating the EULA, only making a method to violate it, many would argue that the (unconstitutional) DMCA applies here.

The legality is shadey, to say the least. If it were clearly illegal, System and such you still do it and hide behind both anonymity and, in many cases, international lines.

Hmm, if they did end up sueing the cheaters/coders, then they would also have to go after custom skinners and other modification artists? I wouldn't like to see the whole modification side of CS be banned simply to sue some cheaters, when there would probably those who cheat regardless.

Not really, i dont see valve ever sending out cease and desist letters even to people who make skins.

No... because they are not reverse engineering the code and decompiling secure data.
