It cant be easy for valve employees a forum full of messages like: "OMG STEAM SUCK MAJOR DICK LOL" as only feedback... nice debug info, though...

gg valve all thepings on my server browswer now are actually within my filter range to 200ms

Whether this is a result of the change i am not sure, All I know is I see a hell of a lot more servers that are layable now.

          Getting there.

Yeah, freaking arcade game it feels like. Finally played the update this morning, and was quite frankly shocked by the changes. I didn't bitch about any of the previous releases, and I'll try to minimize my complaints about this, but I really, really hope that VALVe decides to revert several of the changes.
» The crappy huge text. I like the idea of updated text, but the execution of this effect is poor currently.

» Web pages for MotD screens. This makes every new map an excercise in ripping myself out of the game to remember that crappy white IE windows are present in the new world of VGUI2. The scoreboard isn't doing well either.

» The ricochet sounds. These are the most arcadish cartoony aspect of CS1.6b, and are quite frankly completely terrible right now. I replaced the default ricochet sounds with those from Operation: Flashpoint back a while ago for my main CS installation, and I'm pretty sure I'll be doing that yet again if these remain. They're really that bad.

» The gun sounds. People complained about the guns sounding bad, but oi, these are even worse. I guess it's a good way of showing people that they should be grateful for what they had, but yeah, pretty poor. I can't think what game the FAMAS sound reminds me of now, but it's certainly not realism-based.

» The knife. Wasn't even incorporated into the shield animations, so you've got inconsistant animations as it is. The animations are decent for the new knife, but the model (and blade in particular) just doesn't fit in with the other weapons, or the general theme of CS, really.
Anyway, hopefully those changes can somehow be tweaked and/or fixed in general before this sucker goes final. It's good to see things progressing, regardless. :)

Well I think that Steam kicks serious butt. Bots are something else completely and you can dive onto your desktop and go back in without losing any sound! Sweet!

Oh and Ghengis. Get Steam is for broadband users. =P

Steam gets my seal of approval.

I liked the newer gun and ricochet sounds better, even though they sound like they've been ripped straight from DOD. The text does suck, and the motd doesn't do images : /.

Beleive it or not, Im bt business, 1/2 meg dsl 20:1 contention, less here in this area im sure, I have been consistently unlucky with 1,6 beta servers, today I was pwning on a MIlwaukee server. with 125 ping, so It s now playable, until this update I was lucky to get bewlow 200ms on beta.

In normal cs I can ping oneof the many UK servers at around 20-36 which is where i like to be. I think its netcode but I can say as Im about as technical as someone who isnt technical at all :P

Having said that, I have understood its a beta and enjoyed the trials n frustrations of acessing it and being part of hte testing phase is a good vybe. All the nay sayerscan gop to hell, 1.6 WILL be released and WILL superceed 1.5, then us beta folks will have a teeny edge on the fossilised conservatives out there.

super shocked at the seemingly neg commentary from the Hawkthere!

Yes text is crappy, but its not 'game-threateningly' so, yes the scoreboard thing and the dead thing is still annoying, but everything else is cutomisable (I hope after full patch).

No big deal to do what we had always done with cs, which is customize the game to our tastes. I dont think in cs 1.5 I had it on default for more than a week, before I discovered the archives here the skins, the server mods, the sounds etc etc etc

Im sure the webpage html ugly motds, are only so because the beta server folks arent overly presentation orientated.

In time as cs evolves, it will get so, u wont be boithered to connect to the white screen horridness when u are used to connecting to a fave server,. with a cs comic strip in motd, or some sort of funky webpage, u get hte idea, Maybe they can embed link code into the html of the motd, so that u can launch a browser,(Thanks to alt tab enabling!!) that browser may have your stats on it oor alternatively the server stats thepossibilities are ndless, just unexplored at this stage..

My penneth worth, I charge you all extra if u want the TRUTH the whole truth n nothing but the truth :P

So hold out NIghty, im sure it will become familiar cs soon enough.

Not a single thing you mentioned was gameplay related and was all aesthetic which seems strange since you're talking about the Quake engine.

actually a lot of what he said was feel related, and after the lay off from counter strike that he allures to, I can quite understand the shock of being visually assaulted by the hideous typeface and the other anomalies.

As the gameplay wasnt criticised, I would think that no criticism of gameplay was intended.

It is still quite weird to be complaining about looks to the game when the game looks hideous anyways yet not care about gameplay changes such as the jumping, removing of the fast walk, adding new weapons, etc. I never really have an opinion on CS though. Each version feels fine to me. It's like coming home and your room furniture was rearranged. There doesn't seem to be anything better or worse about the change but you like it and the feeling of being new wears off quickly and it's like nothing happened. To complain about different text when there are 3 new items added to the game that change the balance just seems strange.

If you want some nice graphics Raven Shield uses the new Unreal engine and it doesn't feel "arcadey". Oh and I'm not knocking Raven Shield here by saying go play it. It actually is a good game(some people say go play Q3 as though it's some sorta inferior game).

I haven't even played 1.6 yet, and I hate it.
