The higher end Ryzen CPUs from AMD will be released on March 2. The line, called AMD Ryzen 7, will come in three offerings. Now keep in mind that Ryzen 5 and Ryzen 3 CPUs are also coming, but there is no release date confirmed for those just yet.
As mentioned, the high-end Ryzen 7 CPUs will be available in three varieties and price points.
It should be interesting to note here that the Intel Core i7-6900K with its 8 cores (16 threads) at 3.2GHz (3.7GHz with turbo boost) usually goes for over $1,000. You're looking at a savings of nearly $500 between the top of the line Ryzen 7 1800X and the Intel i7-6900K.
AMD is positioning the Ryzen 7 1700X to be an alternative to Intel's i7-6800K. Ryzen is about $40 cheaper. Both have the same base clock (3.4GHz). Ryzen has a slightly higher turbo boost clock (3.8GHz vs 3.6GHz). Ryzen also has more cores and threads when compared to its "equivalent" Intel chip (8/16 for Ryzen vs 6/12 for Intel).
That leaves the Ryzen 1700 to compete with the Intel i7-7700K. AMD's offering is about $20 cheaper than Intel and includes twice as many cores and threads than what Intel is offering. While Intel's CPU can clock upwards of 4.5GHz, AMD has the advantage of the 65W TDP.
The stock cooler for Ryzen will include an LED light ring, for those that don't plan to get an aftermarket cooler but still want a little light show in their case. Below are two videos.
