Microsoft Pulls Yet Another 180 and Removes Mandatory Kinect Usage for the Xbox One

Is this the third or fourth complete reversal that Microsoft has pulled concerning the Xbox One? I honestly cannot recall as I've lost all track of what they keep flip-flopping about from one day to the next.

Yes, Microsoft has now said that you can completely unplug the new Kinect sensor from the Xbox One and the console will miraculously continue to function! This is in complete contrast to May when they said you would need to have it plugged in at all times just for your Xbox One to function.

More recently, the company said that you could at least turn the Kinect off and still play. Now, you can unplug it and toss it aside and still play. This comes from Marc Whitten as part of IGN's "Ask Microsoft Anything About Xbox One" ongoing feature.
Since Kinect must be plugged in for the Xbox One to function, what happens if your Kinect breaks? Like if it falls off the top of your TV onto a hardwood floor or something? Will the console cease to function?

    WHITTEN:
Xbox One is designed to work with Kinect plugged in. It makes gaming better in many ways – from the ability to say “Xbox On” and get right to your personalized homescreen, to the ability to control your TV through voice, Smartglass and more. Kinect allows you to search for your content, instantly move between games and your personalized dash and more with just your voice. Kinect helps you pick up and play by automatically knowing which controller you have in your hands. No more need to interrupt your friends game or navigate through multiple UI screens to sign in and tell the system which controller you are holding. It will even bind the controller to the console if its currently unbound – no searching for special buttons! Of course – these are just a few of the system wide benefits of having Kinect. Games use Kinect in a variety of amazing ways from adding voice to control your squad mates to adding lean and other simple controls beyond the controller to full immersive gameplay. That said, like online, the console will still function if Kinect isn’t plugged in, although you won’t be able to use any feature or experience that explicitly uses the sensor.

Granted, the company said (and still says as of this news post) that they have no intention of selling the Xbone without a bundled Kinect. So yes, this still means that (at present) the Xbox One bundles are still $500. I guess we'll have to wait and see how long that statement lasts before being reversed as well.

At this point they might as well announce a price-match with the PS4, or include a Surface RT for the current price. Heck, maybe even rebrand it to Xbox 540. They only need one more flip-flopping reversal to make it a fitting name (can't call it another 360 now can we?).

I'm almost willing to bet we'll see a possible price reduction announcement at Gamescom.

While I do like some of the games coming only to Xbone I still am hesitant about giving them credit for this, and I still think I am getting a PS4.

Either that, or a separate bundle. We can only hope.

Now developers can choose to ignore the Kinect, wonder if a cheaper sku without the Kinect will come out, then they can claim to be cheaper than ps4.
