PSA: PlayStation 3 4.45 Update Locking Up Some Users' Consoles

The 4.45 update that Sony rolled out yesterday for the PlayStation 3 may be responsible for locking up a number of consoles. Though the update has since been rolled back to the 4.41 update, those users who have already updated should be aware that this problem does exist.

The issue with the 4.45 update does not affect every PlayStation 3 owner, but it is certainly something that has affected enough users that Sony took action to roll the update back while they figure out what went wrong. If you are someone experiencing issues, the best bet right now is probably to just wait it out while Sony works on a fix. There should be no need to reformat your system as they will probably make the fixed update available to you one way or another.

Given the number of updates released for the platform thus far, it's just an unfortunate bug that managed to slip through the cracks. And before the Xbox fanboys start raising a stink over this, how did those red rings of death work out for everyone?*

*I own an Xbox 360. I have suffered a defective DVD drive and then a RROD on the replacement they sent me. Just wanted to mention that before people give me crap about posturing for one platform over another.

Commenters at Polygon are suspecting that the problem may be coming from PS3s with custom 1+ TB HDs, whereas stock PS3s shouldn't have any locking issues. I wonder why that would be a possibility?

Shame that this happens right after they are getting all the good PR. Hopefully for their sake it does not affect too large of a userbase.

I updated to the newest version and didn't have any problems at least so far. Also I've suffered the pain of the @#$%'ing Xbox 360 red ring of death about 4+ times so I know the pain on both sides of people getting screwed on the 360 and with this PS3 update, it sucks but you know shit happens.

Any who this is why I am mainly a PC person any who, although I cannot pass up Mortal Kombat on my PS3 and the other fighting games really only reason why I have consoles :S.

I'll try to translate. Please correct me on any misinterpretations Zips and DJ_Casper.

That was in response to this:

I believe DJ_Casper misinterpreted your attempt to prevent flame wars, and focused on the RROD comment, causing a misunderstanding that you were insulting Xbox supporters, instead of realizing you were cautioning Xbox fans not to flame the PS3, because TGN supports coverage on all consoles, and the community here is not about flaming any of the consoles (though criticizing policies we don't agree on is a completely different matter).

I'm going to go ahead and say he was serious about telling you that there is no need for flame wars (due to the misinterpretation in your attempts to ironically prevent one). As a journalist, you have a strong enough proficiency in the English language to understand what he was talking about. As a reminder, this is merely an attempt at a translation of what DJ_Casper is saying, so I'm not actually judging either of you. Hopefully we can all come to an understanding.

The last post was probably mentioning how off-topic you went with your experiences on your Xbox 360 posted on a PS3 newspost. And by off-topic, I mean DJ_Casper may not realize the context you were using your example in. As in "Cool story bro! Totally relevant to news about the PS!" At least I THINK that's what he's saying. Hopefully this will give some clarification to this conversation.

Thnx K-16 as I do not have time to explain cause my job eats too much time

P.S. Yeah I'm against flame wars or any conflicts between gamers!

Zips doesn't matter what you said. I forgive you! (everyone has bad mood and days)
