Nvidia Announces Android Based Portable Gaming Console Named Project Shield

Just revealed during their CES 2013 presentation, Nvidia has revealed what they are calling Project Shield. Powered by Nvidia's Tegra 4, it sports 72 GPU cores.

Built on top of a controller with a built in screen, it includes roughly 5-10 hours of gaming of games from the Google Play store. This translates to 24 hours of continuous HD video. It also includes an audio system with a better signal to noise ratio of an HP system with Beats Audio.

The controller portion somewhat resembles a PS3 controller in design with two analog sticks, four buttons on the right, a d-pad, two top triggers and two bumpers at the top.

The entire device runs on pure Android. There is no additional skins being used here. HDMI, micro-USB, microSD slot, and a 3.5mm audio jack are all included.

They have an actual working Shield on stage. Given the power behind it, it's already made the Ouya obsolete in nearly every way imaginable.

More information available at the Nvidia Shield website.

They also just showed it running a 4K resolution video before demo'ing some games on it. It looks good, really good.

Edit: Whoa, they're showing off a live multiplayer demo of HAWKEN running on this little device.

Edit 2: WHOA... they have a way to connect to the PC and stream your games from your PC onto this device. They even have it so that you can connect to Steam and Steam apps in addition to non-Steam games. Think of it as Steam's Big Picture mode but in reverse... but with the ability to run Steam's Big Picture mode.

Am I the only one who feels it is going to be strange to hold that? I don't really play much console, but the way the screen is attached to the controller makes it look like you are going to need to have to hold the controller right in front of your face to be able to see anything, unless the screen can bend backwards a little more. But yeah, I'm curious about it's price, it's basically a controller with more graphical power than my laptop

I agree. My guess is it would work like the Nintendo DS and snap into a couple different positions.

Yes, actually it does. Assuming your PC can run Crysis.
