Gabe Newell Calls Windows 8 a 'Catastrophe' and Touch is 'Short-Term'

Valve's Gabe Newell held nothing back during his appearance at Casual Connect last night, an annual event held in Seattle, Washington. Not normally the reserved type and always ready to speak his mind, Newell fielded such topics as what Windows 8 will do to the market, how the push for touch screens and more will be a mere fad, and why he and his company are making a push towards Linux.

Speaking with Ed Fries, former VP of Game Publishing at Microsoft, Newell expressed his concerns over the direction both Microsoft and Apple are taking their "closed ecosystems."

    On Valve’s interest in Linux
“The big problem that is holding back Linux is games. People don’t realize how critical games are in driving consumer purchasing behavior.

“We want to make it as easy as possible for the 2,500 games on Steam to run on Linux as well. It’s a hedging strategy. I think Windows 8 is a catastrophe for everyone in the PC space. I think we’ll lose some of the top-tier PC/OEMs, who will exit the market. I think margins will be destroyed for a bunch of people. If that’s true, then it will be good to have alternatives to hedge against that eventuality.”

    On the evolution of touch
“We think touch is short-term. The mouse and keyboard were stable for 25 years, but I think touch will be stable for 10 years. Post-touch will be stable for a really long time, longer than 25 years.

“Post touch, depending on how sci-fi you want to get, is a couple of different technologies combined together. The two problems are input and output. I haven’t had to do any presentations on this because I’m not a public company, so I don’t have any pretty slides.

“There’s some crazy speculative stuff. This is super nerdy, and you can tease us years from now, but as it turns out, your tongue is one of the best mechanical systems to your brain, but it’s disconcerting to have the person sitting next you go blah, blah, blah, blah.

“I don’t think tongue input will happen, but I do think we will have bands on our wrists, and you’ll be doing something with your hands, which are really expressive.”

It seems as though Newell is also looking at how the future of game distribution will play out. He says, "we think the future is very different [from] successes we’ve had in the past. When you are playing a game, you are trying to think about creating value for other players, so the line between content player and creator is really fuzzy. We have a kid in Kansas making $150,000 a year making [virtual] hats. But that’s just a starting point."

Really, $150,000 a year making hats? I knew I shouldn't have stopped working on digital design.

I sincerely agree with Mr. Newell about Windows 8, but when I read the part about the kid from Kansas making 150K a year just by selling TF2 hats.. to that I say.. what the fucking hell is wrong with this world.. and I thought selling TF2 hats for real money was illegal..? No?

He meant that the kid made a hat (or probably hats, plural) for the game. As in, he designed them, Valve then picked them up and added them to the Mann Co. store in game. And voila, money was made. It's the same thing for those people that make maps that Valve then officially adds to the game.

Microsoft is making Windows 8 to replace their mobile failure. Windows 8 with a touchscreen for desktops isnt really going to happen. Some will do it for a fad and others as a gimmick to make a media center for their systems/TV, but I think the majority will turn it off and use keyboard and mouse.

With that said, Dell, HP, Samsung, Sony, Apple, Microsoft, and many others are releasing newer and cheaper touchscreen TVs and monitors because the technology continues to drop as well as demand increasing. Because of all that, touch stuff is not going away anytime soon. Too many big names in the industry are behind it, like USB, and I am surprised Gabe is saying something like that.

As for tongue input, its coming as well. Anti-texting laws are gearing up in many countries, including the US, and the technology is greatly improving thanks to Google and Apple. Again, not a big thing for games, which is his focus, but it wont be going away.

Input/Output is not a problem with USB3 and Apples knew firewire style connection that I forget at the moment. The next sata is coming as well as the decrease in price in SSD drives.

So, take what I say for what you will, but I work in the industry looking at many different things every day and, to me, it seems kinda obvious where things are going. Could be a bunch of fads and we will still have keyboards/mice for many years, but I dont think a lot of this stuff is temporary.

Ah, I see. Spank you for the clarification.

... I'm having deja vu here... Am I going to see Gabe Newell walk down the aisle of a Microsoft press conference in a future E3 to talk about how Steam/Steamworks will be part of Windows 8 or something? Or am I imagining the similiarity? (Shh... Ignore the GFWL bit preventing my delusion from ever becoming reality or even practical. That and ignore the fact that Steam doesn't need to be natively built into anything for it to run.)

HA! I forgot about GFWL, which also reminded me how they are integrating all that, and the xbox stuff, into Windows 8.

So a competitor is poo pooing on the competition, which Valve really has nothing to worry about and they could even create a widget to integrate into Windows 8. That would be awesome.

I'm also pointing out how Sony's PS3 was a "trainwreck" according to Mr. Newell, and look where that ended up. Rather curious if Windows 8 will "suffer the same fate" so to speak.
