EA Says the First Two Dead Space Games were Too Scary

Get ready to rage a bit here. EA Games' boss of marketing, Laura Miele, said that the single player, solo components of the first two Dead Space games were too scary. Thus, as a result co-op was introduced to presumably stop people from being too afraid in a survival horror game.

“We were doing research coming out of Dead Space 1 and 2 and we’re really proud of those products. We received feedback to understand how we can take the game out to even more consumers,” she stated.

“We were hearing feedback that they love the thriller game, but it was pretty scary, and the obvious next step was that they wanted to play with someone. So we introduced co-op into the game.

“The horror of Dead Space is still all there. It’s still true to its roots and no less scary, but people felt far more comfortable playing it with someone else than they did doing it on their own.

“Personally, I would rather go to scary movie with my husband rather than sit at home with the lights out watching one on my own. We’re looking for that to reach out to consumers that perhaps were not open to Dead Space 1 and 2.”

One would have to assume that a horror game is never "too scary" under any stretch of the imagination. Granted, it seems as though it's only perceived as being less scary due to you playing with a partner, but if that's the only reason co-op was added in Dead Space 3 that seems like a fairly weak argument.

I'm easily scared and I played the game once and didn't feel that scared. Most of the scares where jump scares which in my opinion are cheap scares to do. After some minutes you could always figure out the monsters who were dead and the ones who where going to jump at you, and you could also tell that something was going to happen. Now a game like Amnesia, that's a game I do not have the balls to play.

'If it ain't ragdollin', it ain't dead' that's my Dead Space philosophy. And they were not that scary, they had the suspense sure, but not Amnesia-scary.

Only games i can say that really scared me at some point areoom - Back in the day playing with the lights out alone at home. Ran into my first cyberdemon and my new soundblaster card kicked in and I literally jumped out of the chair.

System Shock 2 - Played the demo version in college when it came out. That game had the best audio of any horror game i had played up to that point.

F.E.A.R. - Bought and played it for the first time last year. I loved the cut scenes and buildups that happen during the game to raise the tension.

That means that our forefathers were kicked out of every decent country in the world. We are the wretched refuse. We're the underdog. We're mutts! Here's proof: his nose is cold! But there's no animal that's more faithful, that's more loyal, more loveable than the mutt." -John Winger (Bill Murray) Stripes

LOL, this game scary? Compared to what? Pee-Wee Hermans Play House? Only game I ever found scary in my life was resident evil 1 when I was just a kid and had no idea what the game was about, and yes I played Amnesia, hell I even have a full play through of it on my youtube account and I barely found that game scary. I want every game to have co-op, every FPS game or RPG game to have co-op. I was really glad to hear that Dead Space 3 will be co-op because it would be more fun, not because it would be less scary, lol. What a joke, IMO every damn game should have the option for Co-op no matter what, if the people want it, then fine, if not then play single player mode. Co-op mode could be just a tag along just like Perfect Dark's version of Co-op. I've played F.E.A.R. 1 & 2 & some of 3 before I uninstalled it because it sucked balls, All Resident Evil games, all Silent Hill games, Amnesia, S.t.a.l.k.e.r games, Doom games, Quake games, L4D 1 & 2, you name any scary game from NES games to today, I've probably played it. I want more co-op in the perfect dark type of style! So I don't have to deal with idiot CPU partners if my friends are unavailable to play.
