Tell EA What You Think of Origin

In a recent blog post, EA has invited the community to voice their criticisms and wants for their Origin service.

Recently, Jon Peddie got in touch with EA about what he thought was a missing feature; he had purchased a game on Origin and wanted to run it on a new PC, but couldn’t get past an error screen and was understandably frustrated. We were able to connect with him about what was happening and rebuild his account to fix the issue. The exchange also made it obvious to us that some of Origin’s most fundamental features—like the ability to play your games from any PC—weren’t as clear as we’d hoped.

That’s where you come in. Like Peddie, you have a unique opportunity to engage us in conversation and help shape the future of Origin. That’s why we’d like to ask you to use take a moment and leave a comment about (1) Your favorite Origin feature and (2) A feature you’d like to see added or improved upon.

There you have it, an open invitation from EA to have your voice possibly heard when it comes to the Origin service. At present, over 810 comments have been left, so simply head on over to the blog and add your own comment on what you'd like to see changed the most.

This is a great place for the "Oh God, why?" meme.I would like to view all the results and see how many are honest and constructive feedback.I havent even looked at the comments yet. Perhaps my faith in the internet will be restored, which as low as it is, wont really take much.

I can deal with Origin to play bf3 (honestly I never even see it - you do everything through Battlelog & Battlelog is my home page), but please, PLEASE give me a clock in the in-game overlay. That's all I want.

I remember how many people hated Steam. I remember how many people absolutely HATED that you had to have Steam for Counterstrike 1.6. I remember how since there were shields in Counterstrike 1.6, people hated it and kept playing 1.5. I remember when they took the 1.5 network down (forget what it was called) and there was no more Counterstrike at all unless you were playing 1.6 and Steam. I can still hear the echoing cries of that outroar. "A Steaming pile of" well you get the gist. That was the most common way to refer to Steam, for years. Even when Half Life 2 came out, there was still a bit of antagonism towards Steam.

Now look at it. Maybe it was Portal, Team Fortress 2, Left 4 Dead, or all the other hundreds of games from other publishers that are now on Steam, but somewhere along the way, people stopped hating Steam.

I was a Steam adopter on day one, even before they stopped supporting CS 1.5. My SteamID is 0:1:3090. I haven't seen a SteamID as short as mine in years lol. And from day one I knew it was a good idea, if not so well implemented, but give it time and it would be a force to be reckoned with.

It's called disruptive technology. When it first comes out, it doesn't meet the needs of the consumers because their needs are already served by what they already have. But as it gains ground, it takes over. Steam has done that when it comes to PC gaming.

Origin is just simply trying to copy and/or compete with Steam. In a capitalist setting, competition is a good thing. However, unless or until they do a good job, it's going to suck. And the only thing that Origin has for it right now is requiring it in order to play games that aren't available on Steam. If it wasn't for that, practically nobody would use Origin.

So, as much as I think EA's decisions suck, and Steam doesn't really need a competitor, if they want to enter that arena, fine, cause again, competition is a good thing. A few years down the road, maybe by then Origin will be competitive. But if they want Origin to succeed, they need to 1: Do everything Steam does, but better. And 2: Have features that Steam doesn't.

The problem is, Steam supports publishers other than their own. Even some EA games are on Steam, until something went wrong and EA decided to be 'tough guys' and do what nobody else is doing and separate from the pack. They blame Valve, but if Valve can get along with everyone else, even games with Windows Live in them, then EA did something different that Valve wouldn't stand for, so the blame is really on EA.

So, until Origin supports games other than EA, it's doomed to fail, even if it does steps 1 and 2. The success of Origin will depend completely on the success of the games that require Origin to play.

I know. I don't know how to fix it or if it's even fixable.
