VOIP Built-in to Battlefield 3? Nope.

Don't get your hopes up for VOIP being included as an in-game solution any time soon, if ever at all. DICE's zh1nt0 replied to a fan via Twitter to address what the company plans to do with VOIP functionality in Battlefield 3.

We´re keeping the voip as it is right now. By increasing to this level of functionality we would have to make the VOIP solution a part of the game installation, which we currently don’t want from a business perspective.

It looks like if you want to use VOIP in game, you must either use the Battlelog voice communication, or nothing at all. Sure, there are Ventrilo and Teamspeak solutions, but in a public server setting, those just aren't viable options.

obviously voip is ideal, but I cannot understand why people cant use the chat box. Given 95% of my play is done with clanmates and on TS, but for that other 5% the squads I have been in have all used the chat box with no issue at all. It really doesnt detract from the game that much that you cant type a simple message every now and then.

Am I the only person who absolutely hates in-game voip? I'm not saying don't put it in the game, unless it causes any lag. I've never played a game with in-game voip and not disabled it before playing. In past games, most of the people who use in-game voip are the annoying f's I don't want to hear in the first place.

I understand why people want VoIP in-game. I get it. Its a nice convienance to try to get some good teamwork without having to hide in a corner to type your commands or questions. It is also a better tool to make new friends than chat.

What I dont understand are all the people raging over Zh1nt0 saying this as if they are removing the feature from the game that had it to begin with. This is not in BF3. It was stated before release it would not be in BF3. It was stated some time ago about it being part of Battlelog. Thats how it is at this time.

I dont see it being in the future either. If people would just take a step back and look at the design, its obvious that Battlelog is handling the VoIP seperate from the game. Unless DICE did some coding in the background, I would think it would take a bit to get it in-game. Not saying it can't be done, but as of now, the communication all goes through Battlelog.

It hurts from a pick-up-and-play standpoint. For example - I just had a baby last month...that means I'm stuck waking up at ungodly hours. Sometimes I can't fall back asleep and I get on BF3. Obviously the people I normally play with aren't online at this time. It would be great if I was able to communicate with my teammates without having to get them all to alt-tab and find me on battlelog to party up. On top of that people come and go, so keeping all 4 squad mates in voice chat would be a pain.Any other time, I'm fine without it. I use vent to play with friends - easy.As for individuals who are new to gaming on the PC or don't have friends to play with for some other reason. They have less of a chance of making friends, IMO. When I played my first FPS (cs 1.3 years ago), I got along with other people who used voice chat. I don't think I made a single friend by typing. Without in-game voice, I feel people aren't going to meet new people and play together. Without that, I feel they won't stick around. If I never met friends in cs, I wouldn't still be playing cs. I would have quit LONG ago.Perhaps this is just me, though - maybe I'm the minority who can't make friends via chat. :)

              Yeah, friends.

BF2, 2142, BC2 all had in game voip and it was very seldom used. When I joined a clan we went to TS and never used ingame voip again. In BC2 I was using voip and actually had someone tell me to stop talking, they were here to play the game and not do "teamwork bullshit."

Again though, Im sure you knew BF3 was not going to have in-game voip on release. In the BL forums people are acting like they are removing it from the game. Thats more my gripe. I dont care one way or another if VoIP is added.

I was just about to say that. I always hear people praising VOIP but I haven't heard it used in any game except for CS, and the people using it in CS are only talking about the weather or something. Even in RO2, which is supposed to be a highly teamwork oriented game with a necessity for voice communication, no one uses it.

In Project Reality nearly everyone used it though and in an effective way. Of course the mod filtered all the idiots by its particular gameplay and the fact it wasn't ranked. Frankly I could care about VOIP in the game since there will be no mods, just upgrade the commo-rose to something useful.

Project Reality was a game with an isolated fanbase that believed in realism in the game and tactics. You get a bunch of people like that together and they are going to use VoIP. Same goes for a clan. Which goes back to the minority of players.

Stryker, they didnt change anything. Nothing to be shot over and over, other than saying no again and again and again. Unless its a brand new day for you every time they say no.

No, I usually end up diabling it too after overdosning on teenagers, rap and Russian.
A shame really, but it is a real hasle to hunt down and mute a couple of nitwits each round.

Couldn't agree more waste of their time to make voip when they have one in battlelog, even though it's quality is pretty bad, everyone uses teamspeak anyway. Commo-rose if fixed would be plenty.

The one in Battelog is for pre-arranged parties, it doesn't do you much good in a public server.

You do know that CoD is notorious for its Voip, right? Thats what all the bitching about 12 year old kids screaming words they shouldn't know for another 54 years comes from. I want voip in as a nice addition, but Calling it CoDlike because of its lack is another argument that is lost on me.

Though I do see Crunch's point about BF2 VOIP being rarely used.
