Gearbox to Honor Borderlands Fan Who Tragically Passed Away

Michael John Mamaril was a tremendous fan of Borderlands who unfortunately lost a battle with cancer at the young age of 22. To show his love and support of his late friend, Michael's friend Carlo sought a favor from Gearbox by way of a eulogy delivered by the series' robot mascot, Claptrap.

Gearbox delivered and then some. Claptrap delivered the eulogy as best as Claptrap could (click the link to listen). His voice actor even broke character to speak from the heart to offer his deepest condolences over the Michael's passing.

While already going above and beyond the normal call for a developer, Gearbox has promised that Michael John Mamaril's memory will live on by way of an NPC in Borderlands 2. While you may not like the games they make, you do have to admit that Gearbox is easily one of the classiest studios out there. They've helped people become engaged and have shown extreme class and tact in a somber situation such as this.

Our condolences to Michael's family and friends. To Gearbox, you did a great thing here.

I admit, I did tear up listening to the eulogy. Perhaps it has a bit to do with my own grandmother passing just the other week, but his eulogy was touching in its own right.

I think Gearbox is one of the few companies that truly spend the extra time to read emails and requests and to really do something special for those events that happen in life. Gearbox is still and has always been one of my favorite companies.

I'm sorry to hear that. I had hoped all would be well after she was out of the hospital. I didn't realize it's been a while since my first two and only private messages on this site. Damn... I'm sorry for your loss.
