You could always in the past take the install files from EADM and back them up, like I did with the Battlefield boosters (first time I needed to use EADM), afterward I could just install them from external HDD. Worked with both BF2 and the BF2142 booster. I know BF2 Special Forces was offered as a digital download, but I think if you guys go far enough in the BF2 archives here you will find that it has been known that EADM put expiration dates on its downloads.

Actually Dvd's are much slower then installing from various kinds of hard drives. First If your installing from a DVD, your going to have to patch. A steam back up image has all the updates, if the game has Steam cloud all your settings are saved.

A DVD that's burned at a 16x setting transfers at 21.13 MB/s
A 7200 RPM hard drive transfers at an average 60 MB/S to 100+ MB/s

Now I haven't used EA download manager or origin before, but as far as hardware upgrade, steam, impulse, Direct 2 drive, and battle-net have never given me any issues with upgrading then reinstalling games from my storage drives.

And I just checked, Origin does have a place to specify where you want the install files placed for each game, so re-downloading shouldn't have to happen any more.

Blu-ray can transfer data at 72 MB/S at 2x, but that's a moot point since PC games are still sold on DVDs.

Disks have their place, I have binders of disks 10+ years old that still work, most of my hard drives that are 5+ years old have died off, but I've almost always backed up data. Only one harddrive did I lose some information, some artwork I was working on, luckily it was from a pencil drawing I did, and you know still had.

I have however had 2 game Disks wear down on me, Diablo 2, which I bought a disk sander, that fixed the issue. Second was Battlefield 2, which had a crack in the center. I had to re-buy the game, which at the time was only $20, though I couldn't get the DVD versions in a store any more, just CD.

that only worked with the boosters, it didnt not work for the core game for BF2 or BF2142, I've tried.....many times, the installer would error out at the point where it automatically inserts the serial number.

How about just putting the install files into the Origin install directory (where it downloads them to) and then running the install (from Origin)?

If you download the game through Origin, you just copy the entire game directory. So if you want to copy BFBC2, you copy the Bad Company 2 folder in Program Files. Then you put it in the same location on your second/reformatted computer (so go to program files, make an EA folder, and then put the BFBC2 folder there). Then you go into the BFBC2 folder, open the _Installer directory, go into the DISK1 folder, and run EASetup.exe.

Steam, all you need is the steamapps folder.

Rightnow downloading BF2 to my DM1z, see how it runs. If it works out I might be playing BF2 from school this semester, so catch me on Origin.

Make sure you switch the window from the store to the game library. That will fix CPU usage problems

No one is complaining about the time it takes to install. Retrieving the install files and installing the game is ALWAYS faster via physical media. For now.

I am just going to update this with my experience with Origin:

BF2 and BF2142: Some people have managed to get them added to their Origin account while others are told that it is impossible. Very consistent EA

Dead Space 2: It came wit an invalid license key that I had to have EA support change.

Spore: I bought it through Origin, and once again the key is invalid. Support tells me that no games before 2009 can be activated, and they do not have an ETA for a solution. And yet they keep selling it through Origin. I can still play SP though.

So what do you think will happen when a million rabid BF-junkies start to activate their game on Origin?

BF3? It will work, but the numbers will bog down the infrastructure and Origin/Battlelog will be to blame though it is only the front end.

There may be. I have to admit that adding origin to the mix of the other never before done things with BF3 makes it another point of failure.

I was able to add a lot of my games to Origin, but when I was helping a friend they refused and told me the only way was to rebuy them. I asked to be escalated to a higher level manager and was then told the system for adding older games was down with no ETA on when it will be up again.

Bump.
So, I noticed that Origin starts automatically whenever I reboot.
I am pretty sure I told it to not do that, but the option seems to have vanished. Or am I imagining things, was there never such an option in the first place?

Anyway that is pretty arrogant of EA. I managed to kill it from msconfig, but I doubt the average PC user will even know that tool exists.
And I wouldn't be surprised if it overwrites the setting each this it updates.
