didnt really say weather he was playing a dvd version or a downloaded version of the game, but if this is true that iis total crap becasue i hate having to run games through other unnecessary stuff like steam and origin. hopefully retail hard copies dont have to deal with this.

Well, here is the thing; He could have only tried it while playing the alpha. The same alpha that I played and Origin was required to install it, but during the alpha, I didnt have Origin running.

So it may be required to download it, like MW2 and Steam was, but unless they change it some, it wasnt needed to run it the entire time. I guess the beta will tell more.

Yeah I just ran it off the website, I'm hoping that option is still around come retail.

Also as someone that's had to use, Battlenet, Impulse, gamespy all in the past, sometimes with steam as well, when it wasn't the clear front runner it was now, I dealt, yes losing Steam as a option sucks ass, but that hasn't stopped Blizzard from selling PC games, so EA thinks it can do that same thing, and it's nothing new, it's just steam is dominate, gamespy almost had that at some point. If Battlefield 3 dosen't come through with the hype, or there is something else that's messed up, or very imbalanced, any excuse to ditch the game on top of this hoop of having to deal with origin, sales will be shed for sure, especially with call of duty on steam (though not on pre-order yet on steam at least). However if the game delivers, and offers a experience unlike anything else offered by most games, especially for a market segment that's into Shooters, and teamwork based games, gamers will bow and buy the game, World of warcraft has proven that, and so has Call of Duty: Modern warfare 2.

not sure about BF3, but i believe people who bought BC2 on origin said they were able to quit origin after starting the game and play the game fine.

mehhh...I sure wouldn't hold my breath on EA saying they will mess with something so fundamental to their entire digital distribution system, it's proboly allot harder to fix than he makes it sound or it certainly would of been done by now.

there's something to be said about having a physical copy, especially with amazon release day delivery, no tax no driving and it will be at my door by 10am release day.......and as a habitual reformater having the disc is nice, the only thing i see origin having going for it is the beta access, that alone will sell copies since these days most demos are "betas" because everyone loves to have a carrot dangled in front of them.

if you do not use your account for 2 years you will loose it, and the games you have digitally bought with it. that's what it means xD. Also i hope they REALLY make origin use less CPU

EA is denying that you can lose you games that way. But it is that kind of crap that makes people wary of EA.

The Origin terms of service are designed to protect against misuse of the Origin system. No Origin user who has paid entitlements and/or downloaded games will have their account cancelled or games expired due to extended non-use. The term regarding account cancellation for non-use is designed to guard against creation of non-active accounts for inappropriate reasons.

Steam says they can cancel your account, downloads, or purchases at any time.

EA will likely not cancel your account after 2 years anyway. They are just saying that they can. Steam says they can cancel your account any time, but they don't do that. EA will also reinstate your account if you contact EA support.

If you're constantly reformatting, it would actually be better to get the digital downloads. All you would have to do is download Origin, and then all your games will automatically download and install without you having to take out disks and whatnot.

Also, I wish my shipping was that fast. I'm lucky if I get it 7pm release night.

If you're formatting a lot then it's better to have the DVD, you can install the game much faster than downloading even you have fiber optics.

well the point being with a physical copy you dont sit there and wait for it to download 8 gigs worth of data, then a 2 gb patch, eat up bandwidth and so on.....you simply pop out the disk install and save yourself a couple hours of waiting. Unless origin is drastically different than the EA downloader, with the EA downloader you could not back up "install" data because it's based on a hardware ID when it's downloaded and once you reformat your hardware ID has changed and the installer would error out if you then tried installing after a reformat.

Origin is far far better than anything ea had in the past.

I need to test that install theory and see. A virtual machine should do just as well as a format.
