GameStop Execs Claim Battlefield 3 Will Not be on Steam

More confirmations are coming in today to confirm what we've suspected all along, Battlefield 3 will not be sold on Steam. The latest confirmation comes from statements from GameStop's management team with Baird, a financial research firm.

Financial research firm Baird recently held a meeting with Gamestop’s management, and in its subsequent report says: “The upcoming EA title Battlefield 3 will be sold as a download through GameStop, but not through Steam.”

Baird has since told Develop that it had heard the claim directly from Gamestop executives. EA and Valve have been approached for comment.

“Given Steam's dominance – and insistence on users downloading a Steam client application – publishers are likely to be receptive to a competitive alternative,” the Baird report read.

I trust none of you had gotten your hopes up too high.

Wow, another bad decision. I'm starting to focus on games like Planetside 2 now, since it seems this one is going all kinds of directions that I don't like.

Put the game wherever you want. I'm buying it. Dice deserves the money, in my opinion. Bc2 was the first game to keep my attention for more than a month since cs 1.6. Sure I'd rather have it through steam, but I doubt it'll bother me in the long run.

      Just my 2 cents. :)

More and more things are pointing this way. Those leaked alpha pics show origin all over the place and makes it pretty obvious that it integrates in bf3.I would still be surprised if this wasn't on steam though just because of the huge market they would be able to reach with little effort on eas part.Crunch

This makes me think that they are really confident on the game that they have, and that they actually might have achieved a great game. So basically they might get great reviews making people forget about not buying it because of it not beeing on steam and just go with origin

Yeah, that's true. Use a big title to get origin off the ground. I can say that if it requires origin and not on steam, then I will get it on origin.

That sucks too because all I need is yet another layer to toubleshoot and another app running on my system.

I will also say that if they have decided this route, I don't think bf3 will beat the cod numbers. It'll be an awesome game that changes the industry and will make a ton, but fall short.

Maybe I'm crazy on that, but we will see in October.

I think they'll fall short no matter what. CoD is huge. I wish it wasn't, but it is. I'm hoping this is either the beginning of the end for CoD or that they actually take some more time to develop the game instead of releasing the same thing slightly modified every year.

Anyways, I already downloaded Origin and installed it just in case an open beta of some sort comes out for people who already had an Origin account. It looks nice and all, but you're right, I'm sick of having more and more running in the background. I made SURE to uncheck "run this when your computer starts." If BF3 is as amazing as I think and hope it'll be, I'll probably change that setting back to "checked." :)

If that's the true case then my money's going to the retail version of BF3. EA, Origin and COD can suck on Valve's tits. Infact, just to piss em off, I'm going to buy 10 copies of BF3 and throw away 9 of em.

Like Crunch said, it looks like they are pushing for full Origin integration so they want to take out the biggest competitor from the picture. I wonder if there is also something happening behind the scenes from the Crysis 2 thing.

My computer is not top of the line but not garbage either; yet Origin runs better than Steam, and I hate Steam incessant updating of every little damn thing; I'm bound to uninstall TF2 just because I can't spend two days offline without some new minor update I can't use anyways since it's hats.Origin has come long ways from EAlink and EADM; it's just for EA games (and not all of them) and you can start most games without it running even online, I do for BC2 and 2142.

I'm not a fan of digital downloads, I prefer a hard copy. But that said disabling Steam is a really stupid business decision.

That depends on what your goal is. It might hurt the sales of BF3 some, but it could be a serious boost for Origin.

I think digital downloads are overrated. I like to buy the actual game artifact to add to my ever growing library.
