Is Activision Going to Nickle and Dime Call of Duty Fans?

If their recent statements hold any water, Activision is ready to give Call of Duty players more micro-transaction opportunities than they could possibly wrap their minds around.

Taking a cue from the Blizzard model of online paid content, Activision opens up about its future ideas for the Call of Duty series.
"It's definitely an aspiration that we see potential in, particularly as we look at different business models to monetize the online gameplay," said Tippl. "There's good knowledge exchange happening between the Blizzard folks and our online guys."

"We have great experience also on Call of Duty with the success we had on Xbox Live and PlayStation Network. A lot of that knowledge is getting actually built into the Battle.Net platform and the design of that," he added. "I think it's been mutually beneficial, and you should expect us to test and ultimately launch additional online monetization models of some of some of our biggest franchises like Call of Duty."

Tippl added there is a demand from its core fanbase willing to pay for additional services and content.

"Our gamers are telling us there's lots of services and innovation they would like to see that they're not getting yet. From what we see so far, additional content, as well as all the services Blizzard is offering, is that there is demand from the core gamers to pay up for that," Tipple explained.
These comments come after an official poll was conducted asking if people were interested in a subscription service that gives "additional multiplayer and gameplay enhancements" for upcoming Call of Duty titles.

This certainly seems to indicate that future CoD titles will give premium content and potential gameplay bonuses to those who fork over the cash. There's no saying how this may impact the balance of gameplay. It also indicates that a potential model is in the works for a "pay to play" format to the Call of Duty franchise.

Nothing is set in stone yet, but Activision is already charging an extra $10 on the PC version and will have DLC on the PC that requires a payment. As it currently stands, it does not seem as though these potential payment plans are too far fetched of an idea. We'll just have to wait and see for now.

    Noooooo!
Mirco transactions didn't really work for BFHeores (probable because they only lasted a set amount of time). Then why would they work for Cod? Not to mention that paying to play is such a MMO thing to do.

I really hope Bnet doesn't turn into Xbox Live. That would be so tragic.

As for Call of Duty... well I think everyone here sees the writing on the wall.

You can now buy permanent items with BattleFunds, and the game seems to be doing ok. But Battlefield Heroes was designed around the idea of microtransactions, and they have mostly avoided people being able to pay for and ingame advantage.

I would hate for COD to require you to purchace your guns etc., and customizeable clothes would IMHO look wrong in the COD series.

ETA: And please fix that double-width signature Rykuu

Edit: changed it, please tell me if it is still like that.

I know what you mean having to buy guns would just be a pain, and not everyone wants to spend money ONCE they have bought the game.

Activison are already making a mint with increased the price and high sales of COD MW2.

They are looking for every opportunity to squeeze money out of us. It's beginning to get beyond a joke and just goes to show all they are interested in is $$$ and not looking after their customers.

I also sincerely hope that Treyarchs next COD game has dedicated servers. Treyarch have been excellent at looking after their fans with the CODWAW mappacks.

I have an awful feeling that Activison will put the squeeze on Treyarch and milk it as much as they can aswell.

Things are not looking good for us PC Gamers at all with the COD series.

If they carry on like this their fanbase and customers will abandon them.

            ACTIVISION = GREED

Everyone is so quick to flock to treyarch to be the PC gaming saviour. I'm saying we should be cautious. They made all 3 map packs for all platforms, but gave them to us for free. But they probably knew that they cant compete with modding/mapping.

I have a feeling that activision will give them similar tools for IW.net, so that activision can squeeze more money out of their games.

Yes, treat treyarch like a chinese restaurant, It looks to be the saving grace after a long time without a meal (Dedicated servers) but just because the inital facts seem great, doesn't mean it will be with all in consideration.

People just need to get over no dedicated servers for MW2.

Well I do think that Treyarch have looked after their customers this time round with CODWAW. They fixed most of the games issues at release and continue to give us map packs for a full year. According to rumours another map pack is also due.

This is how a game should be supported. Take note IW.

they wont. IW are too high in their own minds to care about treyarchs work.

Edit: also, im not saying that treyarch did a bad job or anything, just we shouldnt put all our faith in something that may not happen.

and we may need to just forget about it, and give our love and support to another game/franchise, AFTER its released.

they could try, but they won't get a penny more out of me. the game itself was already expensive as hell, probably the most expensive PC game i've seen.

Micro transactions are not monthly payments, lets get that straight to avoid any confusion. Micro transactions is purchasing items, guns, outfits, attachments, extra grenade slots, experience busters "+10% EXP" ect, that are usable in game. They are not essential to the game but make the game more fun or make your character unique from the rest of the crowd. You don't have to pay, you don't have to buy anything via micro transactions to continue to play the game.
