Im sorry but when people say "this is a major update and its free" it pisses me off. An update isn't something the dev are giving to you out of the kindness of their hearts. Its a patch to fix broken software that you paid for. When will people understand this ?

I definitely see that side of things. I also see a different side.

This game has already been bought and paid for. For pretty much anyone that will buy it, they have already done so. People bought this game as-is. A patch this late in the game's life cycle doesn't make anyone more money.

This is something done out of love of the game. It's like Shaq or Tiger Woods deciding to play a season for minimum wage or nothing.
This patch is only going to come about to foster good will towards the company and the series. It's not like anyone will directly profit off of its release. The game came out in mid 2005, for crying out loud.

This new patch is only different from the community patches made for Vampire: The Masquerade and Temple of Elemental Evil because actual employees are officially involved. The base intent is still the same. These people are developing this patch because they still love and play the game.

From the Unnamed Assailant, I have nothing but respect and props for the small team making this patch so late in the game. I love to hate on lazy devs cashing in on a sure thing. Many people here have read my thoughts on it. In this case, there is no backhanded compliment or outright insult to be found. I hold no vitriol in reserve.

I'm actually impressed that someone at Dice actually cares enough to work this hard at making this patch, and at making it work properly. They've done multiple betas and are really appealing to the community to help with the testing that 3 people could never hope to accomplish on their own. They want this as much as anyone here does. I want to shake their calloused hands at this point, just for the thought and effort.
Even if I make jokes about the use of "soon" and at how long this has really been taking, I hope for the best with these guys. I really do.

I totally agree that patching a game this late in the game is pretty impressive but i still stand my point that they are fixing their mistakes not giving us a extra treat.

At an earlier point, I would totally agree. The first couple of patches for this game were apologies. At this stage I feel it's different.
Since they stand to make no money for fixing supposed mistakes right now, it really does come out to be an extra treat. They could have theoretically left it at patch 1.3. You remember, the one with all of the crashes. But they didn't. Then they could have left it at 1.41, which many think is just fine. But they're working towards a 1.5 that updates the game to modern systems (widescreen) and fixes some imbalances that have been obvious since day one. If this were to have happened back in 2006, I'd be saying something different no doubt. This is 2009. The game has been out for over four years. They're still allocating resources to it and trying to improve. Nothing but respect and win, still.

It is commended that this effort is being put forth to rectify issues from a 4-yr-old game. On the other hand I certainly remember my frustration with all of the bugs I had to suffer through the earlier versions of BF2. My team dropped our ranked BF2 server after the 1.3 disaster.

I do wish they had come out with a more polished game up front, but then again most game companies release games before they are polished.

Remember not to blame it all on the devs. The devs want to be proud of their work and make the players/end users/fans happy - this is not unique to game software development. Most often it's managment trying to please the higher ups and shareholdes that results in the "meet deadlines at all costs" mentallity. That's why unfinished, unpolished games being released is so commonplace. I hate it, because you're basically meeting a deadline on paper, but not in reallity.

This is definitely a case of a dev trying to make something right and take care of the fans. For the most part, this is a fiercly loyal and profitable fan base that deserves a little love, even if it is a late.

It's not impressive,it's they're duty to give people working merchandise,for what people have payed,look at Valve,they're still updating cs 1.6 at some point

I say impressed because at this point i would expect the company to turn a blind eye and keep moving ahead.
