Bad Company 2's Multiplayer Might Blow Your Minds

If you're still reeling in shock from all of the Battlefield Bad Company 2 information blowout, including our own personal coverage, you may want to stay seated for this one. A preview released today by Eurogamer manages to shed a little bit of light on what gamers can expect from Bad Company 2's multiplayer component.

One thing DICE is happy to discuss, however, is the multiplayer side of the game. Troedsson calls it "the main focus", even though today's reveal is single-player. "I want to point that out - that multiplayer is really key to what we're doing here, almost to the point that I would say the multiplayer in BC2 is more important than the single-player. This is where we get the longevity of our products, where we see the most dedicated fans, and this is also where we're spending most of our focus in the actual development," he says. He confirms that Bad Company's Gold Rush mode will return, and, although he doesn't explicitly say so, Conquest surely will as well, after fan feedback saw it added to the first game in a patch after release. Any co-operative modes? "We'll see." What I see is a big smile. Busted!

Troedsson and Gustavsson are also keen to get behind player incentives in multiplayer. "What we have done in Battlefield products before has been about giving you all the tools directly the second you jump into the game," says Troedsson. "What we're looking at now is we want to create a system that is much more sticky and can keep the interest of people playing longer, by seeing how we can meddle with denying you some of the things at the beginning and seeing how we can pace it out - actually challenging the player to go out and do something specific in order to get something."<!--more-->

"When we are out playing, we are selfish," adds Gustavsson. "I want to be on top of the list. And you need to recognise that fact. As soon as we started giving people score for healing people [in Battlefield 2], everyone became frickin' Mother Teresa... We're looking at that in Bad Company 2 as well, without going too much into detail. We're looking at how we can re-emphasise some of the team play with scoring incentives." One thing they won't be doing, though, is enforcing it. Squad play will be optional this time, and DICE is also looking at ways to make it easier to hook up with your friends.
Fans of Battlefield's multiplayer, and there are plenty of you out there, should be happy after reading that. Undoubtedly there is going to be tons of new media and information once E3 rolls around this June. Stay tuned!

Is sounding more and more promising but I hope they won't be comprimising multiplayer to much to compensate for console limitations =o

The last I read, ALL PLATFORMS will be limited to 24 players, and thats why as amazing as BC2 looks, it's just not enough people for my taste, 32 players really is the minimum and has been for a few years, even then after playing planetside and BF2, 64 and up, is the only way to go now for this style of game.

Here is to hoping either with a Mod/unranked server, the PC version can allow for more people. Heck even the PS3 should allow that since from what I understand they can have dedicated servers, it's only the 360 that you can only host on the console it self, and thats whats really limiting it.

I'm pretty positive no player limitations can even be surmised right now... If they are putting the focus they say they are into MP then one would expect the player count to be higher than 24 people.

I find it funny how the views on this game are suddenly changing. That's all I'll say about that. And what exactly was supposed to blow my mind about this multiplayer? coop? I read the article and don't get what is supposed to blow my mind. Now don't get me wrong, I loved BC on the 360 but it was nothing new. I just hope everyone can see through the hype here and still maintain a reserved stance. :salute: Long live BF

Re: Bad Company 2's Multiplayer Might Blow Your Minds

I think too many people are getting hung up on player numbers. Keep in mind that BC/1943 are not meant to be BF3.

The number of players largely comes down to the size of the map, and the game engine itself. Because PC and Consoles are being developed at the same time (middleware), it's reasonably like that they'll share many resources, including maps. It's more efficient to only make one set of maps, so PC may have the exact same ones as Console, which will make them small-med sized, same as in COD4/CODWaW. Now, it's possible that they may build scale-able maps that can be made bigger for the PC, but that will also depend on what the Frostbite engine can handle. I don't know the specs on it, so I won't say yes or no, just that it might be a limiting factor as to how big a map can be & how many players can be on it.

Large epic battles were a major part of BF2. But again, these games aren't BF2.

As long as the map is a decent enough size (ie. not cramped), you can still have a great game with 12 v 12, (or 16 v 16 if PC can be increased a bit). It'll be different, but still fun, just not as grand in scale. Different doesn't mean "bad".

People worried about this with COD4 as well. The maps were smaller, and anything more than 16-20 or so players became a total mess on stock maps. But once people un-trained themselves from the old ideas of "bigger is better" on a server, they found that the game was a lot of fun when played with the proper number of players. Now, I realize that things are a bit different with BF and vehicles, but I'm just making a general point. Just because something worked a certain way in the past, doesn't mean that's the only way it can work.

As I've said before (and I'll elaborate a bit more in a post one day), I do think that BF3 will be coming eventually, but now is not the right time for reasons both technical and economic. A follow-up project to BF2 will be epic and massive, and shouldn't be rushed or done with anything less than maximum quality, and right now, that's probably not possible. IMO, it's better to wait until it can be done right.

In the meantime, BC2 and 1943 look like they have a real good chance of still being fun, but a different flavour than BF2. It's OK to play something different for awhile, until the bigger game arrives.

I believe you're thinking of BF1943. Right now, besides what was posted here (rather, at Eurogamer), nothing is known about BC2's MP.

Because this is still a business after all, and although MP is very important, ignoring SP will not maximize sales. Game makers have to think bigger picture than what one particular niche of PC gamers want.

From what was written in the article above, it sounds like a lot of focus is being put on MP. So although it's not 100% of what the game is about, it's not just a quickly-constructed afterthought anymore either. Sounds like they're taking a similar approach to what was done in COD4, and although not perfect, it was very successful from both a sales and player satisfaction point of view.
