If you're talking Karkand, then yeah, 24 would be enough (well, not on 64 player Karkand, even that gets boring with only 24 people), but for vehicle maps, 48-64 players are when they start getting the most fun. Of course, an even worse experience is a low population on a large map, because in BF2 that pretty much means all the aircraft are going around the map trying to see which one can rape the lowly ground vehicles first.

Oh, and Skaggy, your sig creeps me out something awful!

Very rarely will you find me on a citymap server, I'm a flyboy

I used to regularly play on 40-64 player servers, but as I got more experience in the game I got tired of the as$hatery you're certain to find on with a high player concentration. So I started to play more on smaller servers, and no longer had to contend with legions of players TKing me for my aerial vehicles etc.... :p

I do agree though, the large battles have a sense of "epicness" that no other size and indeed no other game can come close to, it's just a shame they come with more annoyances too

Hmmm, I do now have a strong desire to revert back to v1.0 and play some epic 64 player battles. Relive the golden days! haha

Maybe, but they denied that claim about BF:BC. And do they really need different games to be testbeds? (assuming BF1943 is on frostbite)

If they do release it for free, it would be a great business idea though, since it will get players excited for BC2. I don't know about the rest of you, but BF:1943 looks freaking awesome. It's just the player cap and "match-making system" that bothers me.
The game looks cool, but how can we take the player cap and match making seriously? It could be a real game if they increased the limit, made it PC only, and removed the silly console match making scheme

and the AA in 1942 was very effective compared to BF2, VERY VERY effective :P
heh i recently installed 1942 on my PC and played few times on wake and while it's no where close to air rape on bf2, it is still there. few times i got into tanks, i got dive bombed, but what was worst was how the enemy plane keeps coming back to the island air field where people are waiting for planes to spawn and mowing everyone down as well as airplanes that are trying to take off. the opposing pilots made sure none of our planes even took off.

If they go with Microsoft Live for Windows expect to have hosted games from people on their DSL/Cable modems (thus the player cap limit), you'll also have to purchase the game and any micro-transactions with Xbox Live points (on the PC and Xbox anyway).

I imagine it'll be priced at around what most download content is right now, $15 to $20 or so, maybe they'll expand into other parts of WWII with additional mini-expansion packs.

This is what Battlefield Heroes should have been in the first place, updated BF1942 that's free with ad support, but ah well.

          Proper Battlefield 3 is A.W.O.L.

Do you guys think on the PC the player cap can be increased manually to 64? I am not getting it on PC but was just curious. I should mention Im getting it on PS3

As it was just announced no one knows anything, basically.

Former BF games couldn't, but I doubt they're using the same engine. Even if they could, though, it would just be like CoD4 PC version. 50 players on tiny maps designed for 24 people or less.

No, player count is low because it'll most likely be a hosted game without dedicated servers, and even if there are servers the level of destruction means that anything above 24 would most likely turn the game into a slideshow. You have too many network updates to send, every tree or wall blown out of a building has to be replicated on everyone's game.

I only really played battlefield bad company and modern combat for the 360. But this, even thou its 3 maps looks great! The trailer really looked nice! I saw planes!! Which is something new to me. Makes me giddy like a fat kid going for cake and I am a fat kid and I love cake so I know!

                      That's even more saddening.

                        NO

Dice, stop joking and make a real PC game, asap!

But the 24 player thing is going to be a deal-breaker. Notice how they showed all the aircraft (yay for being raped by aircraft ...at least the Flak should be more effective than 'smart' AA missiles *crosses fingers*); they showed three bombers at the end, and various fighters throughout. ...
You're assuming those bombers are under player control, I'm thinking it's the equivalent to a commander's artillery strike. ie. no players are inside them.

True. I guess this means the days of the 6-man El Al B17 crews are long since passed. I had forgotten about the destructible environment stuff too and it makes sense that with that stuff would come a requirement for smaller maps and fewer players. Truth be told, though, I'd trade destructible environments for large-scale epic maps in a heartbeat.

                                GET REAL!

BF 1943 will NOT be free on the PC, as that would kill the sales of the Xbox Live and PS3 versions.

It'll most likely be available through EA's Download service and Valve's Steam.
