  • Battlefield Heroes - Makin Maps

    A new dev blog has been posted today over on the official Battlefield Heroes website. Here's what it had to say:

    lol, good old BF2 editor still? You would have thought they would have cloned it and called it BFH editor with a few tweaks

    They called of also turned off the fog and turned on the sky for the first screen

      BFH uses the 2142 engine so theres really no point changing the editor.

            no sh*t, but you would have still expected them to clone the editor so it uses the rigth engine and rename it as well as do a bunch of tweaks so they didn't have to do everything by hand editing the code. Then at the same time they did that, rename it

                They used the BF2 editor for BF2142. I'm reasonably sure that the guy who made/maintained the BF2 editor disappeared a long time ago, probably at the hands of disgruntled mappers who had to use it every day

                  In the mod community you are able to use the bf2 editor 1.3 to make mods for bf2142. however there isn't true support for bf2142, the walkers can't be put into the maps in the editor or else it will crash.

                  DICE most likely has a true bf2142 editor that is essentially the bf2 editor but tweaked to support differences so that it doesn't crash when using certain bf2142 assets. It would not be unheard of that DICE would not provide editors to the community that they use themselves.

                  I would suspect that there have always been 2 different editors, the ones DICE uses, and the one the community uses.

                  so I'm sure dice has tweaked bf2 editors for bf2142 and bf heroes, doesn't mean we'll get them.

                    Or maybe they just spend 5 minutes placing a crate where they want the crashing asset to be, then replace the crate with the walker in code. It's really not hard and recoding an editor that otherwise works fine is not worth the trouble for a small thing like that.

                    Some of you guys are just too pampered, modding bf1942 before battlecraft or editor42 were released would have driven you crazy.

                      You should see all the work arounds we need to do for PR

                      All I was saying is I was surprised that they where using the plane BF2editor from what it looks like rather than modifying it so it can do all the things that BFH needs like wind direction that effects effects etc. thou they may have and just didn't bother to change the name of the program

                        Personally My guess is BFH is free, and so keeping costs down is imperative.

                        This means re-using old engines, old editors and old technology, and paying as few people to retool that technology as possible.

                        This, and also they use Unreal (for Mirror's Edge), and Frostbite now so retooling old tech just isn't worth it for the long term.
