Sony Reveals "PoP" Machine for Games, Movies

Sony and Universal have revealed the latest in non-food related vending machines. Dubbed the "PoP" machine, this vending machine will allow anyone to purchase PS3 games, DVD movies, Blu-ray movies, and downloads at any time during the day.

What’s more, you’ll also be able to instantly feed your multimedia whims by downloading music and movies direct to most MP3 or MP4 players or SD cards.

We’re promised 150 movie titles at launch, including recent smashes such as Hell Boy II and, er, Mamma Mia.

The machines are slated to start appearing soon at travel hubs, on college campuses, movie theaters, and gyms.

If this thing actually will have hard-copies of discs in it, I can see them being broken into in large numbers.

They'll probably only have them in like actual Game stores, or in Banks or something...

There are vending machines that sell iPods and accessories that I've seen. They're typically in areas with high volumes of traffic and wouldn't be easily broken into without a number of people witnessing it.

I understand the marketing behind this as well as making things more accessible and everything. The whole supply/demand thing as well, I get that.

But have we become a society that we will walk by a vending machine and go "Hey, Ive been meaning to pick that up." and buy it right there?

Maybe we have. Its OK if we have. I for one plan to make my own vending machine outfit and roll the thing out like I own it and put it in my van.

No, I dont plan to really be doing that.

I think someone would steal the whole thing, take one copy of Resistance 2 and replace it. No, seriously, they probably would just take the whole thing if they could or the airport wasn't too busy. No one minds a wrenching sound and a pick up truck racing through an airport.

You know, it'd be interesting if they could make the machine burn the DVDs while they're in the machine. This way you don't have a theft problem as no actual merchandise aside from blanks are present in the machine.
