Everyone should take lessons from Valve and their products a´la Counter Strike. I have a LAN party in 2 or 3 weeks, with old schoolbuddies and my old computer science teacher. CS1.6 is going to be the only game which is not pirated.

I probably didn't make my point clearly enough. Pirating a game isn't a problem when the game is GOOD. COD4 is good. It's SP, while not up to your standards, was a cinematic experience for most and of course it's MP is kickass. Everything will be pirated....but again, those people probably wouldn't buy the product anyway. But when your game doesn't sell, it's not due to pirating...it's because your game is a POS. So when it comes to making great compelling games, I stand by remark about IW making a quality game.

I'd also strongly agree with your Valve statement...I'm a firm believer in their model...which is test test test, measure measure measure....wash rinse repeat. Valve metrics are industry standards.

FFOW is cross-platform and a POS. It's being pirated as well but you don't hear them complaining...at least not yet because they know that their game is craptacular. I'm sure if they can't fix it they will throw up the almighty pirate flag.

I just checked out the numbers over at a certain site,cod4 has around 30 leechers while crysis has well over 800.It's quite apparent that if you make a crap game that offers nothing more than gfx that most people cant even run then you get pirated. You make a good game and people buy it.

hmm I see it as 800 more people that wanna play Crysis than the 30 that wanna play COD4.

I purchased both of the games...and if I had to choose which one I'd play right now- it would be Crysis without a second thought.

I just checked the numbers on another certain site, and CoD4 has three torrents that have 1000 leechers or more. One has 1009 leechers, one has 1986 leechers, and the other has 3006 leechers.

And on the same site, Crysis has 2 torrents that have 1000 leechers or more. One has 1254 leechers, and the other has 2654 leechers.

The game on that site with the most leechers is Assassin's Creed, with 8748 leechers. Second is Turok with 5068 leechers, and third is Rainbow Six Vegas 2 with 3810 leechers.

I got Crysis for free when I bought my video card. I "heard" this is a tactic to move a slow moving game off shelves.

I dont know how much water that holds, but it is "interesting".

Re: Crytek No Longer Making PC Exclusives

This is what I said about it in the Crysis area, which is pretty much dead...

He can suck it. Crysis sold just fine. If he really thinks piracy is the main reason it didn't sell more, he's a moron. When you release a game that only 1/10 of the PC gaming population can run, at least at semi-decent settings, how can you possibly be shocked when it sells less than Halo 3?

Halo 3 had a huge established fanbase. Everyone who bought Halo 3 knows damn well it will run on their $350 system. Halo 3 has a huge multiplayer community.

Crysis is primarily a single-player game, and it's short. Even people with $1500+ computers can't be sure Crysis will run properly. Crysis is based on new IP that hasn't had years of word-of-mouth marketing and peer pressure. Maybe the sequel will sell better. But if they make it so you need a computer that costs more than most people make in 2 weeks again then it will sell about the same amount of copies.
I bought Crysis knowing it would run on my system. But my system is a little better than average. Not much, though, and Crysis runs like butt juice on my computer, too.

As far as someone running it with a 7900GS? Sure, it'll run. But most people who just buy Compaqs and HPs and Dells don't even have that. And a lot of people who do have 6800-7900 series cards know that it isn't going to look like the screen shots everyone has seen. It's partially Crytek's own fault for marketing the game based on awesome graphics and making it clear that no current computer can max it out with good frame rates. Think about it from the perspective of a guy who has a 7800GTX that he paid $500 for a few years ago: if systems with SLI'd 8800 Ultras and Quad-core uber procs can't max it, what can he really expect to see? Why bother buying it if he's going to have to run it at low resolutions with medium/low settings?

Thing is, Crysis is a good game. Its a rare breed of a game which you dont see made these days. Even RPGs like Oblivion, which often selfproclaim to be "u can do it all hear lolz" games are far from being open. Crysis offers a game experience which you can pretty much only get in Grand Theft Auto games, and we all know how sh!tty the shooting aspect of those is. So no, Crysis wasnt made cr@ppy, it was reasonably well made with a naturally, completely flunked MP mode, but honestly... Who was surprised by it? I certainly wasnt, BF2 made it very clear which kind of vehicular MP games will reign. So Crysis was left as a SP game with a rather interesting sci-fi storyline, almost all aspects well used. So gameplay issues are purely a matter of taste, and if 1M people bought it, gaming sites praised it and theres not much negative threads/posts about the sci-fi part, then that is largely a hit, instead of a miss.

As for hardware. In one end of the spectrum, we have the notion that the game is a graphics show, on the other end of the spectrum, we have guys like me-

                    C2D T5600 @ 1.86GHz
                    1G of RAM @ 333MHz
                    ATi X1600

And Im running the game at lowest settings, at 50 solid FPS. I could run the game mostly at MEDIUM settings, but Id play at around 15-20 FPS and I would need to keep my laptop well cooled.

And the game is still a very nice looking piece of software, and when the gameplay and physics kick in, the motion will take care of the rest.

Now weve got hardware restrictions out of the way.

So lastly, the game sold over 1M units, 1M units limit is something COD4 either barely scratched, or hasnt reached yet. Which is accoording to a forum post from a developer in another company, but such claims dont really come from out of nowhere, considering that B420 was coming out with an alarming message regarding piracy on PC.

So let me ask you this.

If COD4 and Crysis sold nearly the same, or comparatively similar on PC, and COD4 is multiplatform, where should Crytek ask Infinity Ward for advice? Because from my perspective, Infinity Ward cant even sell COD4 on PC enough to pass sales faster than on X360! From my position, the two companies are using the same, old, rutimentary and aged method of distribution. They are basically, quite simply, trying to sell ice to eskimos.

The problem is, however, that Crytek is indeed looking at IW for an example, and instead of actually getting innovative or at least in touch with the times, they are taking the easiest way out and going multiplatform. Something IW did... and look how well that turned out for them. Sales peak at consoles, bottom (relatively speaking, but still) on the PC... Whos going to be the ones with the short end of the stick? You and me... People who want a great and awesome game on PC, one that we could use, mod, and get support to.

I think people pirate it more than buy it because it's not a very fulfilling game once it's over.

COD4 is heavily pirated, but people still bought it because it has/had longetivity.

Re: Crytek No Longer Making PC Exclusives

On the issue of piracy. I'd bet 90% of us have done it at some point or another. I know I have, in some cases particularly in the past 12 months I've bought games that I have pirated. Whilst I can defiantly see why Crytek (and others for that matter) are jumping ship, I can't justify ditching PCs all together.

I don't claim to be an expert, nor anyone with particular experience of the video games industry but there is nothing worse than having good developers moaning about piracy, it's bad for PC gamers and it's bad for innovative games. What is needed is one voice for game developers, and the community for that matter need to get together and think of a way to combat piracy effectively. I don't mean lets make even more checks with Starforce, I mean electronic distribution. I think it's a pretty good assumption to make that Steam is a extremely successful anti-piracy tool that should be used by other developers.

As games go more mainstream, there is far more money in the pot. Unfortunately there is so little going into the PC market. People who are joining the gaming communities are pretty much always going for the console. So developers have every right to go for the bigger market.

Why? In my opinion poor education of people in order to operate computers and what to do when we experience problems. It's fair to say it's considerably easier to use a 360 or PS3, no doubt about it.

I would be very much interested however in reading figures in relation to PC sales so that I can see first hand what damage piracy is doing.

There is something fundamentally wrong with gaming communities in general if visual fidelity is the be all and end all of games. I'm so tired of the shallow needs of what seems to be a growing majority of gamers. Why do you think that most mature gamers, by which I mean people who have played games over 5 years ago, have favourite games that are in the past? Because they are innovative, with really interesting game play instead of the carbon copy bull-sh!t we encounter "these days".

Don't get me wrong graphics are important, it adds to immersion but it's no where near as important as a multitude of factors.

COD4 sold 9 million....I don't have the figures for each platform yet.
iamfourzerotwo.com is your first and best source for all of the information you’re looking for. From general topics to more of what you would expect to find here, iamfourzerotwo.com has it all. We hope you find what you are searching for!

No doubt that the console numbers are exceptional....but and this is a big but....the PC version of the game is not only well supported by patches/fixes but also well supported with mod tools.

But this is a discussion on the validity of making claims that piracy is hurting Crysis sales on the PC. It's not.

Yes, Crysis is being pirated...so is everything else. BooHoo. This piracy claim is nothing more than an excuse as to why Crysis isn't selling more copies and it's a bogus one at that. Crysis isn't selling because of all of it's shortcomings.

                            Let's start the list:

DX10: graphical goodness only on Vista which has been been left for dead by MS itself lol. COD4 went with DX9. COD4 wins there....smart decision. Crytek should take lessons from IW in game dev. Crytek needs to eval their market better. Most gamer's rigs are like yours.

Game modes: Power struggle???? Again, take lessons from IW. COD4 has like 5 trillion game modes. And they are all well done. Crytek can't figure out a little thing called scaling.....and they sure don't know that big online brawls in Battlefield went out with DC....3+ years ago. Again, Crytek needs to follow IW on game devlopment. How do you have a 5v5 or 6v6 in power struggle...and be done in an hour or less lol?

SP/MP: Crysis is a huge flop in MP. COD4 was strong in both SP and MP. What more needs to be said?

Crysis is the best game of 2009. No, that isn't a typo. GOTY for 2009. That's when most will be able to play it and by then, Crysis will have fixed their MP or a mod will have.

And if Crysis were available on the consoles, it would have sold better....but the failure of the MP to connect the community would still render it a rental.

Seriously, you found one sentence in the whole thing and focused on that? With Crysis, the game was marketed and sold based on graphics and physics. I didn't even really like the single player. It started off great, fighting in the forest. After that, raspberries. So what's left when you take away a rejected B-movie sci-fi plot and graphics? Not much. This game was all about the tech.

And kid, I've been playing games since literally before you were born. Bio Menace and Commander Keen had more original stories than Crysis.

It sold about 1M, if less than that, for PC, during the time these numbers were given out. COD4 on consoles sold more than COD4 on PC 10:1. The numbers somehow add up too. On X360 alone, the numbers were either 5 or 6 million, PS3 was signififcantly less and PC tagged behind them.

the PC version of the game is not only well supported by patches/fixes but also well supported with mod tools.
                                So is Crysis.

Yes, Crysis is being pirated...so is everything else. BooHoo. This piracy claim is nothing more than an excuse as to why Crysis isn't selling more copies and it's a bogus one at that. Crysis isn't selling because of all of it's shortcomings.
                                Yup.

DX10: graphical goodness only on Vista which has been been left for dead by MS itself lol. COD4 went with DX9. COD4 wins there....smart decision. Crytek should take lessons from IW in game dev. Crytek needs to eval their market better. Most gamer's rigs are like yours.
Their target market is spot on. They take a newly established group and think of the future. No need to cater to the masses, especially when a game with a much larger target audience cant outsell it. 1M vs 1M, remember. So IW is in the last position to give anyone any advice. Yet Crytek is still following them. Following where the "money is".

SP/MP: Crysis is a huge flop in MP. COD4 was strong in both SP and MP. What more needs to be said?
Yet failed to sell good enough, considering being stronger in MP? Remember, Crysis sold 1M+, and COD4 is at that region aswell. So IW are not the perfect model. As a matter of fact, they themselves have gotten out of touch with the times.

And if Crysis were available on the consoles, it would have sold better....but the failure of the MP to connect the community would still render it a rental.
They are both making huge mistakes. In Cryteks case, they are letting go of their image of gameplay graphics innovators, for an easier way to make a quick buck. I dont even understand what kind of people are working in the execs positions at both IW and Cryket. You can secure your sales from piracy, yet they are simply throwing the PC games out to the eskimos. Neither of them is thinking straight.

So no, IW is not in position to school anyone. A dev group which barely touches the 1M sales figure on PCs, even though the target audience is there, is not in such a position.

People would rather b!tch and moan about their problems. And they are generally those that dont have a problem. IW and Crytek are ditching the blame for their poor distribution choices and trying to gain public acceptance if they blame someone else for their shortcomings. In IWs case, they wont lose out a thing, because their game is already flawless on every platform. Crytek however, will lose because its game is focused on a specific niche.
