Crytek No Longer Making PC Exclusives

In a new interview by the guys over at PC Play magazine with Crytek's Cevat Yerli, it was revealed that Crytek will no longer be creating PC exclusive games due to piracy. Here is the quote from the article regarding problems with piracy:
PC Play: How do you estimate the current state of the PC gaming industry? Some say that it's only a matter of time when it's going to finally die-off, the others say that "the big one" is only getting its comeback pace.
Considering Crysis is a PC-exclusive title, what do you think of its market reception and its future? Skeptics would say that it's pretty risky going PC-exclusive with such a high-profile title.

Cevat Yerli: It is certainly. We are suffering currently from the huge piracy that is encompassing Crysis. We seem to lead the charts in piracy by a large margin, a chart leading that is not desirable. I believe that’s the core problem of PC Gaming, piracy. To the degree PC Gamers that pirate games inherently destroy the platform. Similar games on consoles sell factors of 4-5 more. It was a big lesson for us and I believe we wont have PC exclusives as we did with Crysis in future. We are going to support PC, but not exclusive anymore.

With these future actions being taken by one of the major developers in the PC world, can we expect more companies to follow? How do you think we can stop piracy in the realm of PC gaming? If you'd like to check out the rest of this new interview be sure to visit here.

Im not going to get in the debate, but it is the most pirated most likely due to it being almost exclusively singeplayer.

yeah but considering it has huge system requirements, and a lacking multiplayer, it still sold over 1 million copies which I think might have been more than they estimated

this is insane... PC Gaming is where the money is not only from games but from hardware, software, tech support etc.. you name it from the PC it makes money!

The consoles are sold as is and thats it...

bad decision..very bad....now I can only imagin the ports that will come from them with perhaps Crysis part 2 and 3 :shakehead:

If they don't think this is a bad idea..perhaps they should ask Kaos or THQ about FFOW and how it failed in PC from being a unfinished port.

except that your are incorrect in just about every way...

Consoles and games for console outsell 3 or 4 to 1 right now. Every time a new "Crysis" comes out everyone has to buy new equipment to play it - not something that is tracked $$ wise - where if a "Crysis" for XBOX or PS3 comes out, no new equipment to buy, you pay a $10 premium for this and it sold... no tweaking, no installation, no hardware purchase. For the <1% of users who are PC gaming enthusiasts they are willing to invest time and money, but the other 99% don't want to sink $600 into a card and $200 into a processor.. etc etc to play a $50 game when they can pay $10 more and insert the DVD and go.

Devs recognize this trend and are making games for the area where they will see the biggest impact to their bottom line - consoles.

Well maybe they can go off and create a decent anti-piracy security feature or seomthing out of the money they save from not doing exclussive content.

Stu you know this is not true. We talked about this in podcast #2. You do not need a $600 card to play Crysis. Remember when my 8800 GTX took a crap? I used an old nVidia 7900GS to get by and it play Crysis just fine. I could not run it at 1920x1200, but it looked and performed great @ 1280x1024.

Also, I am an exclusive PC gamer and do not see anything wrong with Devs producing games for multiple platforms. However, they need to understand each platform and modify the games to the strenghts of each. A Dev should not design a game for the Xbox the same way they design a game for the PC. There are differences in Hardware that must be taken into consideration for each unit. Devs need to remember what works on a console does not always work on a PC and what works on a PC does not always work on a console.

PCs are not going away so PC games are not going away. The market is going to change and it is up to Devs to decide if the change will be for the better or worse based on the games they design.

The smarter adapt and will make millions. The less able will ditch the market. GG Crytek.

Lolers... they make an extremely demanding singleplayer PC game and cry about piracy? Stop sucking IMO.

"What do you think about the Games for Windows Live! service? How come Crysis didn't end-up being a Live!-enabled game? Is it going to change with its sequels?"

Yeah, that's a good way to dig your own grave, charge people /month to play a FPS.

                        not interesting at all,.....
                        thats right!!!! ...
It's there own fault for the piracy also..they go and market this thing like it's the apocalypse of all games, the best of the best, and the multiplayer experience is so bad no wants to play it because its lame,

i was in fp beta 1 (paye beta),
to the end and it never got better with the game play, not to mention dice and crytek are tightly wound with there ps3 coders, cheap labor from china india etc etc, compared to someone who build's actual real pc games..

now all we have to look forward to is console releases and thats great for the kids who like play games on the console!!!!

I guess Infinity Ward should start charging lessons for game development....

                          Excuses, excuses, excuses....poor Cevat.

I guess these guys haven't figured out that you can pretty much pirate anything. But I highly doubt that sitting around waiting for 12GB of data to transfer to your PC over bittorrent is causing financial issues for Crytek.

Studies have shown that people that pirate games, movies, music, software....would almost never buy the products to begin with.

I have a new name for these clowns...Crybabies.

Switching platforms won't help them sell more copies if the games they make aren't that fun. It'll just make them realize that they fail.

Infinity Ward cried the same way, in public, about pirates. Pirating COD4 and hitting online is as easy as taking candy from a baby. If you want to play solely MP, you dont even have to change any .exe files. Basically, IW is the last group Crytek would have to take advice from, as IW went multiplatform with COD4, which is what Crytek is doing aswell.

Everyone should take lessons from Valve and their products a´la Counter Strike. I have a LAN party in 2 or 3 weeks, with old schoolbuddies and my old computer science teacher. CS1.6 is going to be the only game which is not pirated.
