I'm not gonna bash here, but lets look at this logically. Lets travel back to the months before BF2 was released.....

Now thats a pretty old video, pretty much everyone has seen it by now and arguments have come and gone about how and why what content was taken out, but that video is just serving as an example as what BF2 could have been. The real problem stems from not what di(EA)ce left out, but what they promised the community and then lied about. I don't know if any of you were following BF2 before it came out, but I was. There are articles floating around the web of press reports with dice officials talking about the different things BF2 will have, and support. Some stuff on there is laughable.....mod support being one of them....but really all companies do that, right?

Well to an extent yeah, were all out to make money and we'll all say what we need to say to get our next buck, but what really angers ME about this whole fiasco(and the reason I'm not buying these upcoming games) is the way the community was treated AFTER the game came out. The lying didn't stop, and the half-assing began.....

      Patches
wow, and I mean wow.....if I'm not mistaken wasn't there a huge memory leak in the first patch? ok...first time, not a big deal but how long was it to get a fix out? and how long after that for each consecutive patch?

And what exactly did these patches fix? If I remember correctly there were bugs and exploits in EVERY patch, some that are STILL not fixed today.

And what about balance? Did dice listen to the community ONCE when it came to game balancing? Did they fix ANYTHING the community asked for? (Thats a serious question BTW, I honestly cant remember) What ever happened to the J-10, oh yes, I remember....after months of protests from the community whats his face FINALLY came into one of the many huge threads in the issue and straight out said they wont be fixing it, hell at least they were honest....I respected them more there because they told the truth for once.....

      Mod Support
      lol....

      2142
OK so about halfway through BF2's(should have been) lifespan di(EA)ce releases 2142. In one of there press releases on the game the community manager(Mitch was it? edit: no, Mitch is the CM for Kaos(a company that actually listens to there community)) said that there was an ENTIRE team devoted specifically to mod support....hmm, maybe they did change....Fast forward to today: lets see, theres STILL NO editor, NO documentation, and NOT EVEN A MENTION of mod support for 2142.....

      wow....

Now I realize that di(EA)ce doesn't have to support modders, thats all fine and dandy for them(they could at least let the damn community know such little facts as this, but thats another argument) but for me....as a modder....of course I wont be buying from a company that doesn't support modding.

But leaving the rather large issue of modding behind for the moment, looking at the BF series past exploits(sure they were all great games, even BF2 was fun as hell) I would find it rather difficult to justify buying another BF game. Now with various similar games hitting the market, I dont see myself purchasing any more BF games.....

So, seriously asking, why ARE most of you looking so forward to this next installment? I mean, logically speaking....looking at BF2, and 2142 a large amount of these promised features will most likely not be making it into the game, and again thinking about these pasts few BF titles, I don't see how support for the game will improve much....

Bleh, I'm ranting again.....but still....think about it, really do you research into this one. At least give the game some time after it comes out before you purchase for all the major problems to pop up, I guarantee you there will be some......

Remember Zuiquan, half of that is CGI, and was never intended to represent the real game.

I don't know what content you feel you was cheated for, but I have been very satisfied with both BF2 and BF2142.
They are far from flawless, and cursed just by being a part of the EA family, but they are still great games.

And I have found no other games that offer what Battlefield does.
So that is why I am looking forward to BF3. Because no other FPS has kept my interest for as long as its two predecessors.

I am not going to buy it without doing some research first, but that goes for all games that I consider buying. BF3 will very likely have a multi-player demo.

As much as I loved BF2, and as much fulfillment I got from it over two+ years, I don't confident at this point (no promises though) that I am not going to buy another DiCE or EA product. I feel like it is a girlfriend you got great sex from that you eventually break up with. Sure the action was nice, but the drama and failures with it make you not want to hook up later for another long term relationship.

DiCE has tipped their cards too many times in the past to burn everyone. It seems like everyone here has short-term memory problems, seeing that they don't recall 70% of the community walking away from their product because of its problems. Red-tag, crashes, wall-hacks, poor AA...

I am sure that DiCE has learned a ****-load of lessons from this, and they don't want to make the same missteps, but I feel twice-bitten here.

Everyone directly asked them for certain things in the old feedback section and over at EAUK. I certainly chased Colin around in circles asking for them to allow more maps into the Rank Map Pool that were community made (I almost seemed insane about it), and I really think everyone would still be on the product now if that had came about...look at how CS has survived aside from the patches.

And seeing how well they stood behind their products...BF1942 has a bunch of issues at release and eventually became a great product. BF:V, they walked away from and might have been a waste of resources in hindsight with Sweden working on BF2. In reality, they both should have been working full steam so BF2 would not have had near the issues at release (and the several months of delays for a halfbaked product). Then with BF2 release, patch after patch of half attempts while DiCE EU is working on 2142 behind the scenes.

Is this what they are going to do with BF3? They have shown a track record so far of being off in space! Will they release BF3 only to give it half-***ed support while really spending all their effort on some other product to sucker us with?

I understand that you always need to be moving forward as a company, but at least build something that you can sustain a hell of a lot of sales for years and years...look at StarCraft and CounterStrike! Those things are ancient!

Sorry, even though DiCE does make a very fun game, and I say that with a lot of reverence and passion, they are a very piss-poor company when it comes to making a solid product that could stand on its own from the very beginning. Patches should only be there to optimize/tweak or add content, not fix massive issues that could easily been caught in good QA processes.

I have hosted BF1942 for 3 years, without a problem.

Then BF2 ranked servers. This has been a NIGHTMARE from the start. I have never seen such an amount of bad organization, absence of communication, blatant incompetence from a software company. Each and every update from EA has been a total f***-up. Not a single time did it go well, even though the guys on the ranked providers list tried to help EA do its job.

EA insisted on pushing updates to providers (even though it makes no sense),and was consistently unable to do it properly. Providers had to use their own buddy network to get the files. Every time without exception, it went badly and customers got angry and changed providers, only to have the same problem on the next time.

There was no effective communication between different parts of EA, so at every update we were announced a release time and scheduled techs for doing the job, only to have another part of EA release the client files ahead of time, resulting in yet more angry customers and overworked techs.

Do I have to mention the 2 years it took to find and squash the server crash bugs, or the unwilligness to fix the security problems that let players use the commander hack even today?

This is a giant company whose business it is to produce games, and is just unable to do it in an effective way.

EA insisted to keep complete control on every aspect of the business of running ranked servers, but at the same time was fooled by some shady characters into the ROE debacle. EA hired Lawrence Brown as a mod community manager and let him work on a BF2 editor, and then announced the cursed ranking system which effectively killed any chance of survival for any mod. The result, as everyone knows, is BF2 is already dying and the mods have come too late.

But wait! It gets better! As a way to thank providers for their incredible patience, EA then announced "for BF2142, we're only going to do business with the biggest providers. The rest of you can get lost."

I'm sure lots of people will be dumb enough to jump in the BF3 bandwagon. But not me, I have trouble sitting down already because of my dealings with EA.

I will not host any EA game again, even if it was the most popular game ever. Which I doubt.

Your exactly right.. although let me add that the "Stat" issue with BF2/2142 was a complete mistake... They never had a single problem with 1942 and Vietnam and how players played to win and applied more teamwork than when you have someone trying to get a pretty jpeg medal or badge. EA can't run those stat servers forever and they won't either so when they are gone then the game might be playable once again. It would be in their best interest to leave that out of the game along with this gamespy junk that often causes many problems with players.

As long as they don't do the "Ranked" and "UNRanked" servers for BF3 it will be a great game..otherwise it will flop and get about as much support from EA as did BF2/2142.

Because a lot of people look for quantity rather than quality.

While BF2/BF2142 is certainly not without they're problems, between the two of them I've gotten over 1500h worth of enjoyment, so even though BF3 won't be perfect, I have a sneaking suspicion it'll certainly be more than enough to keep me happy for another year or two.

I dunno, I liked BF2 better than BF2142; the futurism was fun for awhile, but eventually the novelty wears off. So, I've gone back to BF2 a lot lately, for the more contemporary/realistic feel, even though the graphics aren't awesome. I figure I'll try Crysis' multiplayer once I get myself an 8800GT, but after I while I just know I'll want another BF game.
So basically, I want a newer, better graphics version of BF2...for this reason, I look forward to BF3. Even though it won't come out for probably another year.
