I think we're stretching some stuff in the sound engine pretty far. Any time I ever had weird behaviours during the beta it appeared to be sound related.

Additionally some of the texture memory requirements we're imposing with long view distances is probably messing with certain hardware configurations.

I never had a lot of CTDs (or even *any* that we couldn't find a cause for) during the open beta.

We'll continue to look into it tho.

It took so long downloading the client I never got any time playing it last night.. Damn! Ah well, so I know what I'll be doing tonight. Hope the familly don't mind my domestic absense.
Why oh why is there no incremental from 0.5 -> 0.6(09)? I'd think with so much talent in the PR dev team they would have managed an incremental?!?

        Re: Project Reality v0.6 Released

because of the sheer volume of changes an incremental patch would probably only be slightly smaller than a full install.
you can't compare this release to an EA style patch which may or may not work

great job PR team! Love the mod! Once you get used to it, it is tons of fun. I just hope that all this hype keeps up and a player base can maintain. I also hope that all those here also try the other mods releasing this week and soon. I love the mod scene, it is because of you guys that the game continues to be a success to EA, great job guys!

But, I'm not sold on this one. I did try it out and have to say that it is just too complicated for this casual gamer. There are too many of the 'you have to do this to make this happen in this order' and 'you need this many in a squad to make that happen'. Also, the time that is required to actually capture a flag is so long. I foresee many stalemates at the very first flag, since they are "required" to be capped in a certain order. Also, the different kinds of penalties for doing something wrong just baffled me. I guess that I just like the original game play the best, more straight forward.
got the same feeling too. hate to say it but pr almost seems to be sucking the fun out of battlefield. there's some great stuff to it but altogether it just gets frustraiting for me.

for example, and although mostly my ignorance caused it, i don't see how i'm gonna enjoy now i do know the deal:

            1. spawn as commander. decide to help out bulding fancy new stuff. drive to the action. die halfway there (partly due to lack of air transport and map distance).
            2. try again. spawn at rally point. woohoo it works. try to build stuff. "sorry, need X kit". try to get kit from rally point. "sorry, need to be at main". die.
            3. try again. spawn at main. get correct kit, because of which can't drive armour or fly (i think...). dodge hell in a jeep to get to action. try to build stuff. "sorry, need a command post thingy". try to build thingy. "sorry, need to be near flag".
            4. get back in jeep, drive to nearest flag. build command thing. drive back. by this time it's been 10 odd minutes...
            5. try to build good stuff. "sorry, can't build unless near flag". die.
            6. spawn in apc, easier to get near flag with. exit apc, ask for kit. "sorry, can't give kit from here". now can't drive apc, 10 minute walk to nearest flag, already spent 15 pissing about. give up and resign.

now, am i the only one seeing the problem with this? i've spent 15 minutes trying to do one thing (build a bunker) in a game that's only gonna last 30. i'm all for realism, but hey, why not just have a map where you spend 24 hrs stuck in the mess hall eating beans? realistic, but not fun. just like getting injured exiting a moving vehicle. cept in real life, at least you can tell the driver to F*£KING STOP THE DAMN THING. why they never listen :shakehead: i just wanna go to the flag, not round in circles

              Re: Project Reality v0.6 Released

You find it frustrating because you don't want to put the effort in to mastering the challenge, simple as that. You either want to be challenged in a game or you should go back to shallow twitch shooters where 12 year olds are the competition. For me the former is most important so that even a relatively simple game like PR is immensely fun. But you should never state that "pr almost seems to be sucking the fun out of battlefield" just because you are lazy.

                Re: Project Reality v0.6 Released

if i wanted to master the challenge, i'd join the army. i wanna play a game, one that lasts 30 minutes or so, i don't wanna spend half of that at main base waiting for vehicles to spawn because they have a 10 min timer and i know it'll take me that long to walk to the next flag, and i'd like not to have to rely on someone else having the nounce to have placed a spawn point elsewhere which for now few people seem to do. each of those features not necessarily being a bad thing on their own, but together it does slow stuff down a bit.

i'm not saying no one enjoys that, you clearly do, i'm just saying more may enjoy it if it were simpler. plus, dc lags like hell for me so pr's the only decent desert based mod i can play for now

                  $kelet0r -
Most other games/mods I play release incremental patches.. So PR is the exception to the rule. Too bad, not much to do about it. A pitty though, why buy a new car instead of just getting the new tires?

                  Regarding your comment earlier on the way PR plays;
You either want to be challenged in a game or you should go back to shallow twitch shooters where 12 year olds are the competition.
You are not a little predjudice now are you? It seems like many of the PR fans think they are the crem de la crem of the FPS game genre.. Let me judge for once; you are no better nor worse than any others around. It seems like you are a bit worse than others, though, at taking critisism of your favorite mod.

we dont say we are better or worse, but what we do say is we offer something the other mods in BF2 can not bring, for the players that do like PR :)

the players that do like PR will not like vBF2, and the players that like vBF2 will most likely not like PR (unless they change there minds, much like me after giving PR a really good shot before I made up my mind). The only thing you can do is just respect your fellow mans view on what gameplay he likes, and move on

I really enjoy playing PR, POE2, DCON, OPK, vanilla etc. I have no bias towards any of the mods. There's a learning curb to all mods as well as vanilla.. Once the intial feeling around and getting grips on things I can't say that any mod requires more skill than any other from the player. I'm sure there are plenty of guyz that would whoop any one in PR if they just took to playing it for a while. Individual skill is nothing that any mod can claim.
So, referring to other games other than PR as "shallow twitch shooters where 12 year olds are the competition" is pretty lame and shows quite some lack of respect for other games, mods and players.

So er... you jumped in and started to play the Commander role without reading any of the manuals and supporting materials, couldn't get any of the stuff done and then decide the mod is boring?

We have intentionally made the Commander role one that has a fair amount of depth. I'd love to have better UI and usability aids but there are limitations in what we can do within the engine. So it is what it is .. and we rely on players interested in the Commander role to have gained some offline knowledge about how the role works.

Also the Commander stuff is largely designed for longer rounds and larger maps, which is a direction we are taking the mod.

We can certainly do a lot more to improve the player guides and such, but er... the fact that you played the Commander role without reading any documentation is not really something we can design around.

We've intentionally made the roles gradually more complex:
                        - grunt = pick a kit, all you really need to know if how the mouse works and what # your squad is
                        - specialist kits = need to know how and where to obtain these, in addition to the above
                        - specialist kits - pilot and crewman kits = need to know how and where to obtain these, as well as how to operate the vehicles, in addition to the above
                        - squad leaders = need to know how and when you can set a rally point, in addition to the above
                        - commander = fairly complex role, has some "bureaucracy" to deal with (rules about building) and has a fairly significant impact on the game world (but not in what we consider the ghey all seeing eye raining down artillery way that the Commander role does in vBF2).

The vast majority of players will be Grunts and there is only 1 Commander per team. The complexity basically scales upwards as the number of required players to fill those roles gets smaller. So the fact that you jumped in and played the Commander role, which is at the top of the complexity chain, without any prior knowledge and then condemn the mod as boring isn't really an aspect of feedback we'd evaluate as being valid.

And not everybody is going to like the style of play in PR. It's probably a bit more like ArmA than it is like BF2 in some ways.

pepsi_max2k: it is very rare for a round of PR to last only 30 minutes, so i think you have the wrong mod.

A typical round of PR can last 2+ hours....

Here's a tip for starting a match once your commander:

                              1) Make sure you spawn as an engineer
                              2) Spawn at your main base
                              3) Get near the flag and request the officer kit
                              4) After picking up the kit, place a command bunker directly in front of you
                              4) Drop your officer kit and pick up your old engineer kit
                              5) Repair the command bunker (wrench) for a few seconds
                              6) pickup your officer kit again to keep it "fresh" so that it doesn't despawn
                              7) pickup ur engineer kit immediately again and finish repairing the command bunker to full health
                              8) Pickup your officer kit again and request the support truck.
                              9) Go and do whatever.....
