G36 is the much better weapon
the l85 has it's moments but it's tempermental, has huge recoil and should only ever be used in single shot mode which is a death sentence up close
It has been improved substantially in 1.2 but it is one of the weakest assault rifles in the game and a poor performed all round
although if have a guilty conscience and think that the like of the G36e and PKM are essentially cheating :P then use it

L85 has such huge deviation I never bother to use it anymore. Lethal when it does hit (1 out of 10 shots)

Hmm there both great weapons IMO a deffinate upgrade on the default weapons. Me personaly id take the L85A1 its got a realy nice scope and its full auto. And since one of the new patchs is a much better weapon in CQB as before you had to master it to use it in CQB now anyone can run and gun with it.

For some reason I just cant get used to 3 round burst in close quarters. I would much rather have an auto like the l85 in close combat. Also, if doing any sniping, the L85 will kill in one shot to the head, which is nice. So its the L85 for me....

I personally hate the L85.. Its got such a bad aim, only like 1 in 5 shots aimed at the opponents chest at a reasonable range will hit. It's not like I'm a bad aim, cos I use bolt action snipers a lot (and not too bad too). Really fustrating gun. Have played with G36 a lil bit, stealing it from bodies, and it's definately a lot better.

I'm very interested in this as well. Any G36E vets out there with some help?

I've unlocked the L85A1, and it used to be great (this means that something seems to have changed in some patch somewhere- i can't reproduce the same results I used to get a month ago). I'm having trouble at ranges though. That is a shame because the scope zoom so much.

I have to completely and totaly disagree with you there i masterd the L85A1 before the patch. And i considerd it to be one of the best weapons ingame on par with the G36C pre 1.2 patch (my opinion of course). Now post patch its a much better weapon up to medium range without a scope and standing still the first 3 rounds hit in a very nice and compact grouping only after the 3 round do bullets start to fly all over the place. The secert to the L85A1 & any weapon in BF2 is to fire in burst not just to empty the whole clip into an enemy.

I like the G36E just for the one-click kill. Helps my mouse last longer.

Pre-1.2: The L85A1 rules at single shot, long distance. However, when you switch to auto, you have to be at ultra-close range or you won't hit your target 2/3 of the time, even zoomed! It is a single-shot weapon about 90% of the time. Unfortunately, I have not tried it post-1.2.

The G36E works really well single shot, long distance. It is inferior to the L85 at the range because of the scope, but you can still be EXTREMELY effective. Mid-close range, the 3-round burst is AWESOME! However, at ultra-close range against a full-auto weapon, you will be taken down quickly. About 50% of the time, you just can't click the mouse button fast enough. It is a 3-round burst weapon about 60% of the time.

I wish the G36E had single/3-round/full auto, but I still use it because if I have learned to avoid going in by myself, thus avoiding the ultra close range without support.

If anything the L85A1 has got better with the patches the problem your probably getting is that lots of the other weapons were made better. The L85A1 is no longer the anti sniper weapon that it used to be since the increase of the sniper weapons accuracy its just not as effective in that way as it used to be. Just try changing your playing style a bit and youll go back to your good old days.
