The rocket launcher from Far Cry comes to mind (not really futuristic), and that stupid machine laser blaster in Jedi Knights.

The thing is, really, do you think there honestly will be fling cars and such, and gigantic mechs and whatnot in the next 140 years? The Jetsons were meant to be around this time and we're not even close to what they'd predicted. Now i know the jetsons are a cartoon, and 2142 is a game, but less then 140 years for all this to happen? I highly doubt it.

Also the flechette launcher in Jedi Knight. That was a huge log.

The Jetsons was also made in the 60's. That's 40 years vs. 140 years, plus all of the technology we've accumulated now. I think it's definitely possible. I don't think they chose 2142 because they thought all of the technology would be ready by then...

I think if you look at what we've accomplished since 1860 it seems more possible.

Landed on the moon close to 40 years ago. So far, we have advanced to a............shuttle thats old, and shouldnt even be in the air. Aside from satelites we havnt advanced really at all from landing on the moon.
In comparison, we have had the gas engine car for over 100 years. So far, with all the advances, pollution and global warming, the best we can come up with is a car that runs on gas and electric, that may or may not get 60 mph. Wow......my how 100 years have changed. ROlls eyes.
There is alot of great technology that could change the way we live within the next 10 years. However the economy would suffer greatly, countries would fall......etc.etc.
Its ironic that money and politics woud limit our advancement as a society.

Let's see. Since 1860 we have cars, airplanes, helicopters, spacecraft, global telecommunications, extremely powerful computers, and the Internet. I know I'm missing a lot but I think the point I've made is clear. It's also safe to assume that there would be an arms buildup before the war due to the coming ice age. You know what that means, tons of money pumped into military R&D.

I guess you wouldn't mind living in 1905, though

Looks good Bring on the $50 mod!!!!

And if ya think reusing the same engine for the same game type isnt a mod of the original then your wrong. And just how much support will BF2 get after this new mod is released? About as much as BF:V dose right now brothers and sisters!

Anyone who doesn't feel comfortable with the whole "near future" sci-fi thing should check out a book called "Pattern Recognition", by William Gibson.

The way it's written is very cool. All it's content is contemporary, yet it managed to "feel" like Sci-fi. Several times while reading it, I sorta just stopped, looked around me and noticed things that we take for granted. It was a cool sensation realising that these things would seem totally magical even 30 years ago.

Take the Cellphone. Back when the original **** Tracy shorts were writen the fact that he carried a device that allowed him reliably to talk to people was a wonder. Portable communicators were a centerpiece for hightech sci-fi. Now they're so common that they've become a pain in the arse!

                  Meh.

I think it was best stated in an episode of the doomed series "Firefly".
Wash "That's not possible, is it? I mean it sounds like something out of Sci-fi!"
Zoe "Honey... we live on a spaceship."

Point is, we take our current tecnology for granted and don't really look very often at what's plausably in store for us.

What's with you guys and lasers?

We still haven't even developed a laser that can cut or destroy matter that's handheld. Most lasers are the size of a briefcase and weigh several hundred pounds. Plus they require a huge amount of energy. They currently have a plane that has a laser mounted on it that can only fire one shot and that's it.

Next thing you'll want is a light saber and teleporters.

How long ago was the laser discovered?
1916 (90 years) ago it was theorised by Einstine.
1960 (64 years later) the first laser was built by Theodore H. Maiman
1978 (18 years later) the first consumer lasers were on the market.
By 1982 (only 4 years later) they were in common use.

See how the time delay shrinks? Development of new technologies get faster and faster once they've been "cracked".
BTW, in 2000 this sucker begain testing: http://www.metacafe.com/watch/42775/death_laser/

All that said... I still didn't see any lasers in the preview vid. I saw a weapon with a blue muzzel flash (Aluminum oxide burns blue and is hot as hell) and a couple big spark shows that are aparently some kind of EMP weapon.

Before you go off about EMP weapons as being too hightech, all you need to make one is to chrage up a really big capasitor, then blow it up. Assuming capasitance research continues even close the the time line for lasers, that should be perfectly duable in a fairly small payload in a hundred years.

Next thing you'll want is a light saber and teleporters.
                            But those would be silly.
FYI, in order to store the information required to perfectly model a human body, you'd need to allign a mass greater than the sun as one big harddrive.
                            Not gonna happen.
                            :p

                            Lightsabers?
Ever hear of a thermic lance? Not the same thing at all, but bank robbers use 'em to puch holes in vault doors. That might make a cool BF2142 weapon!

Re: More new 2142 Shots 3/29/06

Yes, I’ve seen a thermic lance. However, it consists of a long iron tube, often packed with iron wire. One end of the tube is placed in a holder and oxygen is fed through the tube. The tube is consumed, so every few minutes the operator shuts off the oxygen, discards the remaining stub of a lance and starts a new lance.

The laser you posted Wargimp is the Tactical High Energy Laser Advanced Concept Technology Demonstrator (THEL ACTD) it was designed and built by a Northrop Grumman-led team for the U.S. Army, Space & Missile Defense Command and the Israel Ministry of Defense. Now being used as the THEL Test Bed, THEL has been proving laser defense system capability since June 2000, when it began shooting down Katyusha rockets singly and in salvos.

All their designs show that laser as being mounted to a tractor trailer with its own mobile power station.

Okay, now let's stray a little off course.

Do you think that they'll incorporate the grappling and zip line technology into this game?
