The announcement of BF2142 and people's likening the concept to the upcoming Enemy Territory: Quake Wars got me interested in the latter title which I previously knew little about. I did some reading and have decided Quake Wars looks faaar more appealing than BF2142. My reasons are as follows:
-BF2 has been patched better but still not perfect, why would I want to pay for what is essentially a mod of the same game. I can't see DICE/EA inserting anything new into the mix in terms of gameplay, BF:SF and BF:EF have shown a clear indication that they are loath to try anything different bar character skins, weapons and vehicles. To be honest both of them seem to be lazy cash-ins to me.
-Quake Wars is being developed by Splash Damage, who released the superb (and free) Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory, a game which was almost pefectly bug free on release, had a great objective based gamestyle and perfect class balances. Hell, it was released in 2001 and I still fire it up now and again. Their pedigree and dedication to releasing a good game on the first go means a lot to me.
-Quake Wars is claimed to have 2 completely differing sides requiring different methods of play, whereas in BF2 all sides are the same bar minor weapons differences.
-Quake Wars will have objective based play, with capture points that have to be taken in order, rather than in BF2 where you're constantly trying to go the long way round to cap flags or defending flags on the other side of the map waiting for a lone straggler from the other side to turn up. BF2 gameplay only comes in vanilla, and although I still like it for the odd blast, there are less gameplay styles in BF2 than the previous games.
-Wider range of skillsets for classes in Quake Wars (they can build/operate specific machinery)
Although futuristic games aren't my thing, after reading articles like the one below I'm highly excited about Quake Wars. Feel free to vote/ramp/rebuke my thoughts.
