Re: Sniping -- tips and tricks.

I would say learn how to play on the offensive, pushing forward ,instead of hiding all the time. You can definitly get more kills once you learn how to rush the enemy.Plus you learn how to shoot better up close and make faster shot's in closer encounters which is important on city maps.

For more far away shots let the enemy run into your crosshairs then shoot.

Learn your surroundings on map's ,take cover behind things after you make shots.

If you are going up against another sniper, move after you take every shot.Dont stay crouched or prone, that leads for a easy headshot or bodyshot for the other sniper.

Be patient when taking your shots for target's far away.

Because you're a man, and he's a man (presumably), and one of you just bested the other. It's not something you can just let go. You've got to settle it. You've got to whip them out and see whos is bigger, it's the only way!

Some of the tips and tricks on here are pretty good. And usually when it comes to an all out sniper duel, it's a matter of who has the most tricks in their sleeves. It took me a long time to learn how to be a good sniper, but now it's my main kit, and I'm starting to really excel at it, and I think my biggest advantage over my opponents is my creativity. If you are constantly thinking outside the box and coming up with completely new strategies all the time, then your bag of tricks is endless. Train yourself to never use the same spot/trick/strategy more than once and you'll become unstoppable.

Usually, he's already killed 5 of your teammates and they are usually all ducking for cover. Killing the enemy sniper is one of the best ways to help your team. Also, if they converge on him, likely he has claymores to assist him in getting away without dying. If *you* see him through the scope, there's a chance he wont see you and you can get the easy headshot AND help your team :)

so funny how people just prone in the middle of the street after I nail them in the back with an M95 just waiting for the second bullet to come

Spot him first, THEN shoot him.

I hate when I find a good spot and another sniper (or anyone else for that matter) comes up and joins me. All they're doing is increasing the chance of blowing my cover. Granted, more firepower is welcome, but it should be spread out. I read a guide to sniping (maybe written by someone here) that described flanking sniper fire, and it's the best tactic I've ever tried. The enemy really gets confused when they're getting sniped from 2 opposite directions, and they have a hard time finding cover. I want to try and organize a 4+ man sniper squad to encircle a base, that would be fun

              Your problem is the "spot".

The most common misconception in BF2 is that the Sniper class should act as a Sniper (rightly so, given that's the name DICE chose).

To be truly effective, you need to act as what the military calls a Designated Marksman. You travel with the squad and engage targets at medium range. Your always moving and part of the main assault (think the designated marksman in Saving Private Ryan that always said a prayer before blowing someones head off).

My favorite snipers are the ones that pick a spot. They're the easiest to neutralize.

Also, camping is not a good idea. Keep moving around and go with Spetsnaz's tips. Keep with your squad because if you're in trouble, they're the only ones who can help you out.

At a commander's point of view, you want to look like just another soldier on the Battlefield. Don't let him spot you and have 5 men come and get you. Try to blend in.

Well in terms of camping, I usually avoided that like the guide I read suggested. A good sniper won't stay in the same spot for more than 1 shot since they're a wanted man after that (of course in the game you can get away with a few more). I usually went by that in the game and it saved my arse many times. But you're right, in BF2 sniping like a real sniper gets you few points. The only benefit is helping your K/D ratio. Lately I've been doing like you say and getting into the heat of the battle. Personally I prefer assault or support the majority of the time, but I'll snipe when I feel like there's a good opportunity for it.

Great guide spetsnaz, thats gota be one of the best guides ive read, (and ive read alot)
alot of your methods i already adopt, nice tip about the throwing the nade at 75 degrees when being chased, i'll give it a try.
i do think though that something should be said for taking into acount what your standing in front of. i.e. if your standing in front of a big load of sky, your black body is a nice beakon for all to see, even if you are prone (not that you should be prone if youve read the guide), ive always had alot of success when standing in front of very dark objects, in shadows dark bushes etc, often people would run right past me or look straigh at me without noticing me until they saw the deadly muzzle flash from my pistol or rifle.
                    one for the think tank.

Very true. In fact, this is one of those things that need to work off of instinct. The second you get into an engagement, your brain needs to process all of the scenarios and guidelines I mentioned in the first post -- and including this guideline that you mentioned.

Also great tip, however it's important to remember that many players play on low settings (including myself actually). When on low settings, any dark areas are rendered as if there is no shadow whatsoever. Even though I can probably run high with no problem, whenever I care about my kills I drop things down pretty low to make sure I don't get an ounce of lag at any point in the game.

I run on all high @1280x1024 and 4x AA and always maintain a good fps. The only time I ever have any fps loss is the most extreme shootouts, like when 15+ people are swarming in one spot. Even then it's still acceptable. When terrain is set to low does it cut down on the grass and bushes? Doesn't that kind of ruin the idea of taking cover in the brush if people on low settings can see you anyway? I never tried playing on low settings tell me if I'm wrong.

Hiding in the brush is something you should never do. Nearly every engine (I would say every engine, though I haven't seen them all) will not support grass and shrubbery at long distances.

Let's say you're facing a sniper laying in a bush. You have low settings and the sniper is about 1 meter away from you. He's pretty much concealed and if the graphics stay at this level, he will be undetectable at a distance.

As you start walking backwards (facing the sniper), here's what'll happen (on low settings atleast):

                              1. Detailed textures will turn into low detailed textures.
                              2. Grass will begin to disappear.
                              3. Bushes and shrubbery will begin to disappear.
                              4. Ghillie suit will disappear.

There are only 4 things in the entire game that will not disappear at a long distance in BF2:

                              a) Low Detail Player models.
The soldier models seem to have a low detail skin that only shows at great distances. Every soldier looks exactly the same (that means no ghillie suit, backpacks, etc), aside from their weapon. This happens at great distances.

                              b) Effects
Smoke, artillery strike, grenade explosion, etc.

                              c) Terrain
The land and water, not the grass/shrubbery.

                              d) Static Objects
Trees, buildings, logs, cars, walls, etc.

                              --

This is another reason why a "Sniper" role is not possible in BF2. The grass and brush are only eyecandy and do not provide any tactical advantage whatsoever. If you are far enough, even the ghillie suit will disappear.

One of my major complaints with Battlefield Vietnam was that they spoke of such a great and detailed jungle rendering engine but did not mention the fact that all of the "jungle" (aside from static objects like trees) simply disappears with distance. The only "thickness" in the jungle could be seen at a distance, where you couldn't distinguish in the extremely low detail (since it was so small at a distance).

In BF2 (as in BFV), when a chopper hovers over my head, the only way to truly hide is behind static objects. Hiding in the brush or tall grass is no use.

It only goes to show that most Snipers in-game really don't understand the usefulness of the class because they aren't thinking about kills.

They're thinking about (spot the ghillie suit on the first one):

I think alot also depends on the level of play that is being witnessed. If you see clusters of people for insyance mastuur then rip off as many shots as you can. Other times and boards it is important to shoot 2-3 times and move. Adapting to circumstance is the greatest weapon in my opinion.
