So what's the reason for sniper camo anyway?

    <rant>

allow me to paint a picture for you...

... so I've found myself a lovely little hiding spot near the airbase from which planes have repeatedly been taking off raping my team from afar... every time one of my teammates shoots down their plane, the pilot simply respawns and takes the plane back into the air to continue his raping... this has gone on for 5-10 mins while I stealthily made my way into enemy backfield... I slowly make my way into my spot with my trusty M95 in tow. I lay down ever so quietly in a perfectly matched bush. Their pilot is flying as we speak... bombing the bejezus out of my commerades... Finally, our fighter takes him down... he respawns and sprints to the hangar to hopefully re-take to the skies...

The plane spawns... my sights are perfectly aligned to where his head will soon be in the cockpit... he jumps in, slams the afterburner and then *crackle*... he hears the cockpit glass crack milliseconds before a runaway .50 calibur bullet strikes his head... his body lay in the cockpit for several seconds before he respawns to give it another shot... he jumps in and is again pulverized inside his giant metal and glass coffin. My team is actually taking a flag now that they are not being bombed into oblivion... I slowly move to another bush while he is respawning so my position is not given away... I wait a few seconds but he is not there... Seconds later, I hear the rumble of an APC as it flies out onto the runway, its turret spinning wildly as he is no doubt rather annoyed at this point. I lay perfectly still, having switched to my knife so I don't have a large gun barrel sticking out of the bush... I see the turret go past my position several times... He starts scanning more slowly... his turret stops looking dead at me (by now I can barely see him as I have backed out behind the bush)... Seconds later, I'm barraged by APC fire and killed instantly.

What happened here? He scanned multiple times right over me and couldn't see me as I had picked the perfect bush to camoflauge myself in. I scanned the sky for a UAV and did not see one... While he was looking away, I had slipped behind the bush so there was no way he'd see me. He didn't fire on a single place on the hill but where I happened to be sitting, and when he did fire, it was perfectly accurate. A novice sniper might ask, how did he see me??? What a hacker!! But no... not I... I am a veteran to this irritating slap in the face to the stealthy sniper trying to help his team... It's happened before... In DICE/EA's INFINITE wisdom , they have programmed the game in such a way that simply resting your cursor for more than a second on enemy troops causes HUGE, UNMISSABLE RED TEXT to appear above the perfectly environment matched ghille suit that might as well say, "SHOOT HERE, HE'S OVER HERE, SHOOT ME, SHOOT ME!". So I ask any who might be able to explain this logic to me... what is the point in designing a perfect ghille suit for the sniper to wear? Why not make him wear the same uniform the rest of the team wears, or perhaps a brightly colored clown suit just in case the enemy MISSES THE RED TEXT ABOVE HIS HEAD???

um... did you read the rest of that paragraph? I know what happened... it was a rhetorical question...

as a pilot, I expect you to hate a sniper like me... you're a jet whore who likes to bomb my teammates from the relative safety of your flying fortress... I save my teammates lives by keeping goons like you out of the skies... We each have our place on the battlefield so no offense taken... :)

Maybe he requested for a UAV or a scan, but I agree with you, sniper camo isn't much of a help.

snipers are easy to find, no need UAV, and camo does help when in a 64 ppl kark, no one even knows he got a sniper bullet in the chest

hey dude, if I run, he'll likely mow me down before I can get over the other side of the hill... the point is that he shouldn't be able to spot me! thats what stealth is all about!

and Pivco, perhaps a scan, but there was no UAV above me...

btw, camo helps the LEAST in a city map like Karkand... where in the world does a guy dressed as shrubbery blend in on a map like Karkand??

I don't know why EA even put snipers in the game. It's a pointless kit that cannot operate to a "purpose" within the arcadey confines of BF2.

I still believe to this day that the Sniper should have simply been an SDM. The USMC SDM should have had an M14 with a 4x Acog, No Body Armor, Smoke, and a silenced pistol.

It would have been "strictly" a rifle class for 100m-150m accurate support fire in conjunction with the Support role. Perfect implmentation would have been easy. Its rifle could have "STILL" been the most powerfull in the game. Maybe 45 Damage for the SVD/M14, and 35 Damage for the Type-88. Near perfect accuracy while aiming, and stationary, with no crosshairs could have helped with this.

Random "Semi-Auto" unlocks could have been available to the SDM Class. M16-4x Acog, G3-4x Acog, WA-2000 with a 6x Optic - a need to be crouched or prone for respectable accuracy, and a lower ammo count than the other weapons (5 to a Mag).

Simple. Very simple. I don't know what EA was thinking with "Steatlhy Snipers", this game doesn't even allot you the possiblity of being stealthy when the enemy commander can see your "EVERY" move.

A few things could have happened...

Commander Spoted you on map...or red tag poped up, which is the ghey.

just like FF mines and claymores the nooblets need away not to kill friendlies, so red tags pop up..

what do u want to do after killing the same guy few time? waiting for him to forgive u for spawn camping him and go away like nothing happened, or u want to snipe him out of the APC

Re: So what's the reason for sniper camo anyway?

                      LMAO at "nooblets"...

And BTW, I wasn't spawn camping anyone... spawn camping is when you kill guys right when they spawn... I didn't do that. The idiots that are so preoccupied by the vehicles (primarily the flying ones) and stand still at respawn points DESERVE to be popped... Besides, what I was doing was no different than the engineer who plops mines on the runway or the spec ops who C4's the jet... I was helping my team by keeping him out of the air... not like I was doing something illegitimate...

and exe163, I didn't want to snipe the guy from the APC... I wanted him to be unable to find me and hopefully go about his business... it's funny how people take being sniped so personally and make it their mission to kill me back... Which when they're on foot is relatively easy as I often lay a claymore and run away to have them get blown to pieces... but the point is, he shouldn't have been able to see me where I was and without the aid of the RED TAG, I would have succeeded in keeping him grounded so my team could continue to take flags... I was aiding my team when DICE's shoddy logic kept me from doing so...

Well, he would have eventually had a scan on you, or a UAV. So, the Red-Tag was the least of your worries. He would have saw you anyways, and you would have died.

I do agree with you that the sniper class is useless with the plethora of ways to find and eliminate the lone sniper... between the scan, uav and red-tag, the whole "stealth" factor has been eliminated and the sniper has been reduced to an accurate rifleman as you described above.

ya red mark sux when theres enemys u cant kill, in basic FPS's, snipers can kill enemy unit b/f they notice.... or maybe next time u be commander sniper = god mod!

Um... I was killing him... wait...

How the hell do you kill someone without them noticing they were killed???

I think in the end, the point is that there's no real way to make the stealthy kill in this game since it tells you that you were sniped and you have a variety of options at your disposal for finding the guy who killed you without using any skill at all...
