I had the same problem and ive managed to fix it, what it is , ATi are a bunch of gays the stock drivers they supply us with jus dont seem to work with bf2 , or steam source games.... goto www.driverheaven.net and get the lastest OMEGA drivers.... that will almost definetly fix it, its fixed mine..

Pardon me if it doesn't help, this is what happened to me, mainly due to my stupidity.

      1. Did a full unistall of bf2 & sf
      2. Install bf2 & sf and full 1.21

I tried the game, all was fine in single player but lag badly on pubs.

      Repeat step 1 & 2 with 1.2 & incremental 1.21

Still facing the same prob, tried all mentioned in forum, still the same. After a night of troubleshooting, only to realise it's windows' firewall restricting bf2 to access the web.

Pls check if u hv firewall on n if so add bf2 or to whatever name that you have renamed for bf2.exe under the allow list.

Yeah i'm getting these stutters in game, like i have a really bad ping to the server, however my ping is between 8 and 25. I've only been experiencing this problems since installing the new patch. I'm 100% sure this is a problem with the patch, maybe a conflict with graphics card drivers, i don't know all i do know is that it has nothing to do on my end. Punkbuster kicks me even though i have the latest punkbuster, i get stutters the rest of the time.

I have not changed anything with my game settings since installing the new patch, yet i'm still faced with these problems? It can only point to one thing, the patch itself.

What are you running for a network. Like was metioned above if it is wireless you could be having problems there. If you have more than 1 computer running through a hub or router, disable or pull the plugs for other computers and give it a shot. When my kids access the net I will get horrible pings and stuttering (MSN is a killer to ping SHUT IT OFF).

So please review these things i have underlined, and use your common sense to identify any i have missed, before you decide to spout some idiotic troubleshooting in this thread. I have also tried the clearing prefetch file/defrag combo. I also really shouldnt have to tell you my specs, but basically its 1gig ram, x800 radeon, and p4 3ghz, so mroe than enough power, AND MORE THAN ENOUGH INFO ON SPECS THERE... And let me tell you this right now so you dont come up with some other stupid s*** to try to "help": THE GAME WAS WORKING FINE BEFORE. I HAVE PLAYED IT FOR ALMOST A YEAR WITH NO PROBLEMS WHATSOEVER.
Now that these very simple things are hopefully clear, i can tell you ive been having the problem since v1.20 and now still having it with 1.21... The game runs nice and smooth for the first few minutes of play, then starts chuggin out of nowhere, making it unplayable. Somethign must be wrong somewhere, I am no expert so i cant say, but it is obviously not this stupid "general overview" troubleshooting advice people are giving... so if anyone out there can help out, its there in the thread title, mailed to ur door, i cant afford mroe than $20 wotherwise it woudl be more... for once lets hear some helpful advice on this problem which many people seem to be having
ok i will atempt to help you with a suggestion, plz dont take it the wrong way :) i dont want the 20 dollars keep that u will need it for my solution.

you say you have been playing the game for a year with no problems,ok thats cool.

i noticed you done regular defrag's reformats ect, also a good thing to do

                  but...
doing all the above is great but it wont stop dust from getting in youre cpu(yes i no its been mention but thats not important right now)

but it can be a combination of 1gb ram not beeing enough,(try 512 more or a gig more) <-- if it still stutters then its this..............

prosseser+heatsink+1 year or more of use = probaly no heatspreader left on heatsink for a good contact.....

this will result is a majoy heat increase when in a 3d game (checking bios wont show you heat for a 3d application, just heat for the cpu being on...

i suggest a easy way go and buy a copper heatsink with a good fan on it,and use silver compound(heatspreader) instead of the defualt that comes with a standard p4 heatsink......

im almost certain youre heatsink is out of themal paste contact and needs to be changed.

personaly i would get more ram aswell.

i had 1 gb ram and a 9month old heatsink on my amd2600+ so i replaced the heatsink and got 512 more ram and i get no stutter when in game but did with 1gb ram.

i hope this help and also hope you have'nt read the same info before,

                  good luck!!!!

p.s use the $20 for a good heatsink

i think that bf2 will just eat up all the ram you chuck at it but over a period of time.

load up the game start playing then ctrl-alt-del and check the memory usage, then continue to play for another hour and check again it will go up,and up.
but thats only if you got more ram,1.5-2gb should take a little longer to use all the ram than say if u only had 512.

                  hope it makes sense,
just trying to answer you q's :)

Exactly, same here for me. 1.2 is fine and no stutters or kicks from punkbuster. Update to 1.21 and the stutters and random punkbuster kicks occur.

Also tried the Omega drivers and still no luck, same syptoms occuring.

I'm agreeing that its on the EA/DICE end with the patch. Can you please tell me your specs BONGMACHIENARY?

And wtf is a ATI 700? Did you mean x700?

Holy crap! I'm not sure I want advice from this guy. Of course I meant x700, genious! Focus on the problem not your ability to name ATIs series of graphics cards.

I've heard new suggestions pointing to possibly wireless connections. I don't use wireless, but even if I did, the point remains that the problem did not start until 1.2. If you were using wireless without any problems (which I doubt) before the patch, you shouldn't have any problems after the patch.

I think it's pretty clear people...THE PATCH IS THE PROBLEM AND IT'S EAs RESPONSIBILITY TO FIX IT!

There are far too many of us affected by this in the same way at the same time as a result of the same patch.

I'll hand it to EA though, they fixed the bunny hopping and red tag problems for me...I just didn't think the solution was to keep me from being able to play at all.

What part are you talking about? There's no joke. Some yahoo decides he wants to ask "wtf what is a ATI 700" when he knows perfectly well what I was talking about.

Too many smart-a$$es out there throwing their computer geekness around. Reminds me of the computer dork in the Saturday Night Live skits.

Everyone keeps asking questions that just don't matter. The bottom line is there are a large number of people suffering from the same problems that all started with 1.2 and/or 1.21. Regardless of their computer specs - if we didn't have the problem before the patch and we all have it now - it's clearly a problem with the patch!

This isn't rocket science...EA, fix your problem!

I had the exact same problem.

I reinstalled the game: No change.
                                Defragged HD's: No change.
                                Cleaned spyware: Nothing.
Reinstalled BF2 and SF: No change.
Reinstalled Chipset and graphics drivers... improved; almost back to normal. on 64 player servers mine gets choppy and into the 20fps range. Dice and EA have lost a once-loyal customer from their BS.
