I think as soon as an arty strike is assigned to a destanation it should make the other team not be able to spawn there because nothing frustrates me more than gettign arty spawned. And yes with my luck everyround I play it happens atleast once.

Yup. Then you drop a C4 on the supply crate, 3 more on the semi-repaired arty, wait until you are completely restocked on C4, run away, pull the trigger, wash, rinse, rank, repeat.

I went ahead and fixed your post for you. As for my post...

I'm not talking about real life - you'll note that I even said "I'd make one simple change" in relation to the current BF2 artillery. You got that you schizo? BF2. That's what we're discussing. Save your real life military knowledge for someone who cares and for someplace where it actually matters.

Tactically it adds a lot to the game, the commander scans, spots the dence patch of red spots then tries to hit a moving squad, not so easy.

Squad leaders tend to shout out for supplies much more than arty, the point & request is accurate near and far (suprisingly accurate), I wish you guys/girls would shout out for the arty more aswell as supplies.

Taking out the lead squad ftw

The artillery is pathetic, and is simply there for that cool factor that only elementary school students would consider cool. They had the artillery perfect in BF1942. They were just as devastating as they needed to be, but they required either hours of practice and memorization to use, or the help of 1 or more teammates to operate. Now it's someone who skips school to get a higher rank that can point and click, and that's it. No aiming, no thinking, just mindlessly clicking and destroying an area.
pointing and clicking is how the world works now, i'de bet that if Bush wants to nuke a country, he'd pull out a laptop, and drag and drop a bomb where ever he wanted...lol

Unless it was on Zatar Wetlands - then the bombs would land Southwest of wherever he targeted them.

Artillery is awesome and adds to the intensity of a situation when it is raining down on your head. There are dozens of other ways to be killed. Artillery is no different.
i tottaly agree with you.. becouse of the artillery this game became more tactical.

Re: The 30 Second Play Clock - Artillary

I'm confused... how does it add "suspense"? What tactics? Do you guys know what tactics mean?

Here's what you can and can do with the commander.

                      With a Commander you can:
                      - Learn where the enemy is without having to use your mind or search.
                      - Re-fill your supplies pretty much whenever and wherever, without having to ration out your ammo for an attack.
                      - Do not need to use teamwork to make sure your tanks and assets are intact (no need for an engineer that actually does his job. just drop a supply crate and move on).

                      Without a Commander you cannot:
                      - Move into a strategically important location (ie: a crossroad) and hold it from enemy combatants (you will be spotted by UAV or blown up by artillery)
                      - Have persistent infantry battles that could last about half the round and actually fight for the flags. (you will be spotted by UAV or blown up by artillery).
                      - Have snipers in tactically superior position that rain down hell on the enemy which takes skill to take out.

I could go on of course.

The point is, the commander is like a built-in cheat. Before BF2, it was totally unheard of to get a position on the opposing team without losing something in the process.

For instance, in Rainbow Six, there's the Heartbeat Sensor. In order to use it, you need to lose all your weapons and hold nothing but the sensor. There are also Hearbeat Jammers to prevent it becoming like the Scans and UAVs are in BF2.

In BF2, there's no point in "holding" a position. If you do, you will be destroyed by artillery. There's no point in masking your tank behind a building, or putting your riflemen behind a brush so they can't be seen, or placeing C4 behind lamp posts to ambush vehicles.

All you can do is run, run, run and mindlessly shoot at other things hoping the artillery wont hit you.

Other people are suggesting that you stay away from the crowd... so where's the teamwork then? If everyone splits up on their own a 64 player server looks like a 10 player server.

And finally, there are those that believe it actaully adds a tacticaly element to the game. This is of course humorous on alot of levels. Pointing and clicking takes no skill whatsoever. Just because you see a little red dot running North and take a guess that the little red dot will turn around and run South is not skill.... its ridiculously easy and anyone with half a brain can do it.

In BF1942, it was completely different. First, someone needed to man the artillery. Second, someone need to spot for the artillery. All you need is two people. If these two people are good players and help each other out, they could devastate the enemy in many ways.

But.. people like artillery for some reason so...

I think the best thing to do is prevent the supply crates from reparing the destroyed arty. That way, someone has to physically get in there and repair it. Repairing should also take time.

Those that say you should take the C4 from a supply crate, replace the C4 and blow again doesnt make much sense -- since they can just bring a tank over and take you out. Also, ary is usually position near spawns so the commander can keep respawning until he kills you.. fix the arty in 4 seconds and drop another strike. At times its so fast that it's as if it was never destroyed in the first place. You, on the other hand, need to spawn far away and make run down to the arty again.

Artillery is a great idea, so are UAVs.. but I think they are implemented incorrectly.

The flip side of that is the struggle you can have with 1 spec'op taking out arty for the duration, is a no win situation. I agree that the roll of eng needs selling  although I personally love it

out of all the times I have died about 18% was from artillery. Commaders artillery really helps the team and can turn the game around. I say leave as is

                          You can destroy it

                          You can hear it

And you can often run away from it

I use real world data to address real world issues (like the % makeup of real human military personnel among real human BF2 players) - not the functionality of fake artillery in a video game. There's a big difference. I always eschew real world data when it cannot be fairly or accurately applied to in-game matters. Read my PKM thread (or any of my threads) if you're still fuzzy on that fact. You will never see me say, "It works like <x> in real life so it should work like <x> in game." Never. Period.
