I stand by my suggestion - require a SL spot for the arty to fire.

Artillery encoruages players to play solo and work away from the main team because as soon as more than 3 people gang together to do soemthing they have it rain on their head.
Funny, I ALWAYS play as a team and I don't have an issue with arty. Basically, considering it takes so much time to actually fall, as long as you keep moving, it isn't a problem.

It takes no real skill to use and tactically it doesn't really add anything to the game, its just a rain of death of the unlucky group of people who happen to be in the biggest bunch.
It does take skill. Maybe not a ton. But it requires thinking ahead and predicting what your enemy will do. It is not just point and click and if that is what you are doing you aren't utilizing it to it's fullest potential.

Tactically it does. It breaks up stalemates. If you have two groups of people stuck in a standoff, the arty breaks it up.

BF1942's artillery model was much closer to modeling artillery without taking away from gameplay from having the play do seperate calculations and such.
No that would stink, having to have three or people man the arty to make it operational. The only reason the unmanned arty is on the map, is to make it a destoryable object. Otherwise it would come in from off screen.

Did you even notice my reference to BF1942 having artillery perfect in a gameplay sense? I understand modern arty would require half your team or more to operate. But just one person that can point and click is absolutely terrible. In 1942, you had the spotter, which gave the gunner in the arty a view of what the spotter saw. Then the person in the arty (which was mobile, allowing you different strategies (if people remember what that word means now)) fired, and adjusted their fire until hitting their target. With this thing called practice, you could get it on the first or second try, or even without a spotter at all (which requires much practice and memorization if you wish to use different spots. Otherwise you're predictable :-P).

i think thats his point - that very fact ruins gameplay. you're in the heat of battle - and arty falls and both teams run from it. it's kind of like a small break in the battle

I agree. . .as I said above I like being able to hunker down and hold a position. However, I was challenging the fact that it does nothing tactically.

But, even with your SL change this would still be the case.

Wait... A spec ops guy is complaining about artillery? Just go blow it up already! Problem solved.

So the ultimate wizard of doom on the other team can cast his conjure supply crate spell and magically repair his artillery?

cmon ea/dice, take the whole commander role out of the game. After all, you pandered to all the noobs and killed the game with 1.2. GO all the way e.a./dice!

Catering to morons is why the commander role exists. :p Removing it would allow things called tactics. This would inherently lead to people thinking for themselves in the game, which EA/DICE definately doesn't want to occur.

I'd say make the artillery not as insanely powerful, perhaps more spacing between the shots?

I don't mind the artillery too much, sure, I get pummeled by it quite often, but I can deal with that.

No. If you really want to make something "balanced" (whatever perverted vision of balanced you may have), then the Commander would take the role of authorization and orders. A squad calls for a supply crate or artillery strike, and the commander authorizes this action. Fun Mini-Game Idea: Commander has to pilot the UAV! Endless fun!

No, but it MIGHT be the case. The point being, it's a two-person decision with representation from the field and representation from command. Right now it's totally unilateral and usually upsets whatever fun is going on down in the trenches.

I don't think you'd see artillery used the same as it's used now. For example: Why would a squad leader request artillery on an area that he has buttoned up? Why would he cannibalize his own points? Why would he endanger himself and his squad, who might be too close to be safe?

                              I'd make one simple change:
Commanders can only fire artillery if a Squad Leader has requested it. The SL spots the target with a (to be added) laser designator.
Lookie lookie, it is Variable again. You are soo right. In real combat a commander has no way of dropping arty without an F.O. (Forward Observer) right?
Wrong. Granted unajusted arty strikes are mucho innaccurate, but arty is an area effect weapon. If it were made to be accurate, the shells would be smaller and you wouldn't have to shoot as much of it to insure effective fire. A commander can pull out his trusty map and call the arty RTO or Mortar Section Leader. They will plot the fire mission and shoot it. There will be no BDA but there will be chewed up earth within 30-100m of the intended target.
Now if you want to have the ability for a squad leader to call in precision arty with an LD, the "copperhead" round is the ticket. This is a drag-stabilized Laser Guided 155 round capable of hitting withing 10m of the traget. Good for bunker busing, Anti-tank or just really precise troop killing.
You concept of Squad leader interaction is a good one. Instead of a LD, the Arty would fire 1 smoke round (WP) You as the SL would adjust, "Right 150m add 150m" "Adjust" Another WP round would drop, "Left 25m Fire For Effect"
Then the arty would fire a 6-10 round salvo. That is how it is done in the real world. BTW if you have to make more than 2 adjustments your map coordinates are wrong or the guns or mortar lines need to be re-laid. Then again, I must be making all this up considering myself and 25% of the rest of the posters on this board are lying about our military service.
