yea, arty is pretty annoying, but just Stick out your chin and take it. Unless you find a server syaing that you're not allowed to use arty, its a piece of the game thats here to (probably) stay.

I totally disagree! Any idiot can put a arty on a bunch of dots. A good commander can direct his team to win the match without use of much arty.

Here's what you can and can do with the commander.

          With a Commander you can:
          - Learn where the enemy is without having to use your mind or search.
          - Re-fill your supplies pretty much whenever and wherever, without having to ration out your ammo for an attack.
          - Do not need to use teamwork to make sure your tanks and assets are intact (no need for an engineer that actually does his job. just drop a supply crate and move on).

          Without a Commander you cannot:
          - Move into a strategically important location (ie: a crossroad) and hold it from enemy combatants (you will be spotted by UAV or blown up by artillery)
          - Have persistent infantry battles that could last about half the round and actually fight for the flags. (you will be spotted by UAV or blown up by artillery).
          - Have snipers in tactically superior position that rain down hell on the enemy which takes skill to take out.

I could go on of course.

The point is, the commander is like a built-in cheat. Before BF2, it was totally unheard of to get a position on the opposing team without losing something in the process.

For instance, in Rainbow Six, there's the Heartbeat Sensor. In order to use it, you need to lose all your weapons and hold nothing but the sensor. There are also Hearbeat Jammers to prevent it becoming like the Scans and UAVs are in BF2.

In BF2, there's no point in "holding" a position. If you do, you will be destroyed by artillery. There's no point in masking your tank behind a building, or putting your riflemen behind a brush so they can't be seen, or placeing C4 behind lamp posts to ambush vehicles.

All you can do is run, run, run and mindlessly shoot at other things hoping the artillery wont hit you.

Other people are suggesting that you stay away from the crowd... so where's the teamwork then? If everyone splits up on their own a 64 player server looks like a 10 player server.

And finally, there are those that believe it actaully adds a tacticaly element to the game. This is of course humorous on alot of levels. Pointing and clicking takes no skill whatsoever. Just because you see a little red dot running North and take a guess that the little red dot will turn around and run South is not skill.... its ridiculously easy and anyone with half a brain can do it.

In BF1942, it was completely different. First, someone needed to man the artillery. Second, someone need to spot for the artillery. All you need is two people. If these two people are good players and help each other out, they could devastate the enemy in many ways.

But.. people like artillery for some reason so...

I think the best thing to do is prevent the supply crates from reparing the destroyed arty. That way, someone has to physically get in there and repair it. Repairing should also take time.

Those that say you should take the C4 from a supply crate, replace the C4 and blow again doesnt make much sense -- since they can just bring a tank over and take you out. Also, ary is usually position near spawns so the commander can keep respawning until he kills you.. fix the arty in 4 seconds and drop another strike. At times its so fast that it's as if it was never destroyed in the first place. You, on the other hand, need to spawn far away and make run down to the arty again.

Artillery is a great idea, so are UAVs.. but I think they are implemented incorrectly.
Agreed. Arty was fine in BF1942, but they screwed it up like most other things. UAVs should require a pilot, and make them use the mouse-look and spot people individually using the com-rose. That way the thing isn't showing anything and everything, you can hide from it, and the pilot either stays high and gets a general idea and see's maybe a tank or two from up there and is relatively safe, or he flies low, gets a better picture, but is taken down fairly quickly by and competent squad he comes across.

Wrong. Granted unajusted arty strikes are mucho innaccurate, but arty is an area effect weapon. If it were made to be accurate, the shells would be smaller and you wouldn't have to shoot as much of it to insure effective fire. A commander can pull out his trusty map and call the arty RTO or Mortar Section Leader. They will plot the fire mission and shoot it. There will be no BDA but there will be chewed up earth within 30-100m of the intended target.
Now if you want to have the ability for a squad leader to call in precision arty with an LD, the "copperhead" round is the ticket. This is a drag-stabilized Laser Guided 155 round capable of hitting withing 10m of the traget. Good for bunker busing, Anti-tank or just really precise troop killing.
You concept of Squad leader interaction is a good one. Instead of a LD, the Arty would fire 1 smoke round (WP) You as the SL would adjust, "Right 150m add 150m" "Adjust" Another WP round would drop, "Left 25m Fire For Effect"
Then the arty would fire a 6-10 round salvo. That is how it is done in the real world. BTW if you have to make more than 2 adjustments your map coordinates are wrong or the guns or mortar lines need to be re-laid. Then again, I must be making all this up considering myself and 25% of the rest of the posters on this board are lying about our military service.
Isn't that a bit like the xbox game Mercenaries?

Anyway, that sounds cool and all, but that feature wouldn't make it into a patch. That's too much of a change in the gameplay. More likely, it'd be in Battlefield 3, if there ever is one.

Respawn close to battle - spend 10 seconds running to position - play for 20 seconds....BOOM!! - End of Fun

Respawn - get to battle scene - Your own commander kills all you targets with Arty - Not to worry, 20 seconds later....BOOM!! - End of Fun
Too bad there isn't a way to blow up the enemies ability to artillery. That would be cool. But EA sucks.

You can blow up their arty. You have to go to it, and c4 it as spec-ops. Takes 2 c4 per cannon. (which is really annoying since EA saw fit to give spec-ops 5 charges, when they need 6, but, i'll just have to deal.)

Re: The 30 Second Play Clock - Artillary

I play the commander role currently more than any other role in the game. As commander, I don't mind having a weapon I can use to help win the match. Usually, if I'm infantry and get artied, I respawn as spec ops and make it my mission to destroy the enemy arty. Even if I don't get it all, or the enemy cmdr sees me and arties his own arty (which I find very funny), I've distracted him long enough to take his attention away from the action. To that effect, my job is a success.

My advice.....if it bothers you that much, BLOW IT UP!!! Wait til the commander drops a box on it, resupply yourself with that box and blow it up again!

Personally I prefer manned artillery. I played PoE for Battlefield: Vietnam religiously, and I was pretty proficient. I used cloud spots to aim and ALWAYS ****ed off the opposing team to the point where they would try to invade our main base for the sole purpose of destroying the arty.

People will say that they could never get a spotter during pub play, but more often than not I found a team player who would take the five seconds to spot. Plus, after I got zeroed in, I could simply use the clouds to aim in the future.

Some peoply say the old arty system was boring ... I absolutely loved it.

I loved it too! :) After playing for a few hours it was nice to sit down in an arty, put some nice bfv music on and have a littel snack while leaning back in your chair and clicking the mouse... those were the days...
Dont get me wrong thought.. i still like the artillery in bf2.

                                I'd make one simple change:
Commanders can only fire artillery if a Squad Leader has requested it. The SL spots the target with a (to be added) laser designator.
Squad leaders can already request artillery using the T button and selecting request artillery and where ever they click it goes there if the commander accepts.
