Re: PC gamer makes a strange anouncement!

My guess was going to be Sega's "Chrome Hounds" but it's an Xbox 360 only platform (so I don't think PC Gamer would be talking about it?)

Anyway, the video's kind of neat but having a GIANT robot sniper (that shakes the earth) when he moves hiding behind a building and nobody knows he's even there seems kind of lame to me.

Ok, peeps... this is the video that's got people talking about mechs in BF3:

It's also worth remembering that Dice was inspired by Tribes while working on BF'42. I don't doubt that many of the dev lads would very much like to do a sci-fi game now that the Tribes fanchise as been put into the grave (thanks loads, VUG).

Well, if you are dice, where do you go from BF2 (aside from fixing the bugs)? Into the future is the only logical extension since we've been to the past and are now at the present.

Either that, or start an entirely new franchise, but they obviously want to build on the success of the Battlefield series so 2141 it is. It could be very cool if it's pulled off correctly.

My only concern is there will be a steep learning curve opposed to how it is now. I mean even the greenest noob knows what a rifle does and how it fires. But a laser cannon or mech? It'll take some time to figure out the game's intracacies, which is not unlike Bf2 really.

i think it will be a fun change from the past (1942), present (BF2 in a sense), and take it to the future with this.

This is part of the reason I'm making noise about the subject. I'd hate to see Dice come out with something that loses the BF market.

As you say, people aren't familiar with laser weapons and the like. They're more likely to stick their nosies up at it because they can't make the leap from familiar to fantastical.

Guns (modern fire arms) are familiar to people, thus they are more likely to accept them. Ever watch the new Battlestar Galactica? Notice a lack of any kind of magical beam weapons? This isn't because they were too cheap to build funky plastic models or to render laser blasts... it's because people really do prefer things that they can relate to.

Point of fact: Slug throwers will always be the most effective way to inflict harm on people and are the most efficant way to deliver kinetic energy to a target.

Dice has already admitted (in a cryptic fashion) it is making the game. And the leaked video on the net shows the biped mech units.

The next cover of PC Gamer is Battlefield 2142. You can take that to the bank.

that video has nothing to do with DICE, it's a hoax

After reading all the posts I did come up with a question. Odd, considering the posts. I wonder what is currently (games I can go down to the store and buy now) the most trouble free, and least in need of a patch to fix it, Game? Kinda odd, anyone know? . . . . . .Red

More accurately, it's going to be the first Vista-only title. Don't expect any other non-Microsoft games that require Vista until, oh, 2009.

Halo:CE was made by Microsoft Games, so I guess Halo 2 will be as well?

Halo is made by Bungie, which got bought by Microsoft. The entire series is Microsoft-run. You did know Halo was originally announced for Mac (as Mac/Windows, but at MacWorld Expo or something) prior to the buyout, and Bungie was a very Mac-oriented developer, right?

Nah, I don't know anything, I just know that EA and Microsoft are evil big companies trying to take over the world...what more does one need to know?

Is not an odd question Red. I went to my local games shop and asked the owner the same question. Hes a mate of mine and his answer was "There isn“t anything". Seems to be a bit of a desert in the quality new fps being released at the min.
