OMG! Bang! You got it! why didn't i think of that?

Not hard to put in the game, not very hard at all. People who don't want to hear swearing don't and the reast of us can play how we like.

Theres not actually a single argument aginst doing that and would solve the problem perfectly :)

War and profanity is one big subject, one not complete without the other.

I like your idea: make it an option in PunkBuster itself, not in battlefield only

You are joking right? I know plenty of kids, and adults, that play war games and do not use profanity. Most of the people I play games with, most are older and their children play on the same server, not only don't use profanity but say 'nice shot' instead of 'you must hack'. I feel that kind of attitude is directly related to the lack of profanity.

Of course your milage may very, so if you like to use profanity you should find servers that cater to it.

I think a server should be treated like eating out in public. Would you stand up at the pizza parlor and call someone a f**king n00b? Probably not. As long as some super smart people are out there who let their young kids play games not rated for them, then the added feature of being able to filter out those words on the server is worth it.

If you don't like it, leave and go find a server that you can call people names on. Problem solved.

                Re: Punkbuster 'language filter'

I'm not a huge fan of profanity and don't use it that much myself. But, because Battlefield 2's chief objectives are stealing, killing, and destroying, I don't understand why parents let underaged children play. Why should the rest of the gaming community have to cater towards minors who aren't even supposed to be playing the game in the first place? This happens in Counter-Strike, as well. Blood is flying left and right from players getting shot up and someone gets kicked/banned for saying "what kind of $h!t was that?" after dying. Are we actually protecting our children with the language filter? Not likely.

If that same child is allowed to watch PG-13 and R rated movies, they have already been subjected to a large amount of profanity. So, what difference does it make if players use that same kind of language in-game? Nothing. The kids have already heard the language via a different medium and are probably even some of the players using it in game chat, anyways.

Let's move to the subject of Christian servers... I don't quite understand the reasoning behind starting a Christian-run CS or BF2 server. Sure, there are many Christians in the military today doing terrible things to other human beings, but wishing to emulate those experiences with a violent game is two-faced, in my opinion. On that same server, it's okay to knife a guy and teabag him, but that same player is forbidden to express their emotions with profanity.

As I said before, I'm not a big fan of profanity. I much prefer coming up with witty one-liners that don't use cyber-slang or "dirty language." It does, however, need to be in the correct context. I don't hear my coworkers or boss at the office saying "f*** this, f*** that" in meetings. But, in a game as violent as Battlefield 2, I can certainly understand where that player is coming from. I don't start getting offended or annoyed until it's just so pervasive that they are only using it to attract attention to themselves.

Racist language, on the other hand, is completely unacceptable. I think that's perfectly fine to filter.

Edit: I've been to many servers that don't allow the word "damn." Be a USMC squad leader and choose "Sorry" in the Commo-Rose and listen to what he says. "Damn, sorry." Lighten up already...sheesh.

Gameplay can easily turn into a free for all arguement. instead of a fun game.

As for what words are filtered this is down to the admin, some will use swear words only, a lot will use swear words and common childish insults (noob, cheater, etc) and some will go even further to make sure only mature players are left.

I swear in real life as much, if not more then the next man, i have nothing against bad language but if people cant hold off insulting someone else just because they are killed in a videogame then quite frankly i dont see why i should have to deal with them in a server, games are here to have fun.

Regarding the kicks for words contained in other words (assets for example) this is i agree unfortunate but the ratio of mistaken kicks is very low compared to genuine ones. also *usually* its a kick not a temp ban so you can simply rejoin and learn the words you cant use very quickly. NO points are lost regardless as long as you have been in the server for at least 5 minutes as your stats will still get updated at the end of the round, if you rejoin you will still have the same score you left with.
Quoted for clarity as some people are still assuming it's to stop children hearing bad language (the points about kids playing adult games i completly agree with.)

Dont forget there are hundreds of servers that dont use any language filtering, in fact i would estimate 90%+ DONT

Firstly, Its not punkbuster thats doing the kicking.. its scripts like modmanager that are using punkbusters kick mechanism.

secondly, exactly how many admins are going to change their servers based on whats being said in here?

Do you honestly think the admin hasnt thought about it and made his/her mind up?

One thing I would say you guys misunderstand tho, is that sometimes its not the swearing that the admins are specifically filtering. They are trying to filter out people who show disrespect in the presence of strangers and feel its ok to swear or be abusive without knowing for sure its ok. I mean, you dont walk into a strange place and start swearing your mouth off do you? well most of us dont.

The bottom line is that if a server has rules you dont like, play elsewhere. there really is no point discussing it further cos nobodies gonna change their mind. not you or the server admins. so just deal with it and for gods sake, move on with your lives!

                      Re: Punkbuster 'language filter'

All EA/Dice had to do was code in an in-game filter that just replaced actual swear words with ****'s. No need for ridiculous GREEN TEXT SERVER-BORAD warnings that clutter up and uglify the screen, cause lag and **** everyone off, just a simple user-option filter to hide the bad words, like on these bloody forums. No need to waste resources in Punkbuster, waste bandwidth and ruin people's experiences because they get kicked for letting out some aggression. And don't kid yourself choir boys, everyone has had moments where you just want to reach right through cyberspace and choke someone to death for a bonehead move. Often times cussing someone out with a few words of in-game chat is the only real way to cool off.

A filter could be an option in the Options menu.

"Filter out swear words" with a box on the side to turn it on or off like every other option.

Like others have said, kicking people for swearing in a game based entirely on horrific and unimaginable violence is hypocritically stupid and inexplainably retarded. If you don't like to see swear words in-game - DON'T READ THEM AND KEEP PLAYING! Idiots.

I couldn't have said it better myself Caveman

We have a language filter but its not extreme. I won't list the banned words but mild swearing is tolerated. However if you constantly swear or try to beat the filter the result will still be the same, you will get kicked or banned.

We expect our guests to respect our other guests. We don't pay for a server so others can play for free and then think its their right to be able to abuse our guests. If you don't like it, tough! Play on another server or better yet pay the big bucks yourself to get a ranked server and run it as you please and swear your head off.

A lot of us may swear but we won't on the server just like we wouldn't in a public restaurant for example. Some of our guys swear all the time on TS and have been asked to use a push to talk key because not everyone wants to hear it all the time because it gets old.

The choice is always yours. Play by someone's rules including not swearing or don't and play elsewhere. Its really not a hard concept to understand.

Well I don't have a language filter at all in our 64 player ranked server. I don't think it's necessary to have it. This game includes violance, killing, death, tanks, explosions, more importantly, it implements the modern warfare. If people are so interested in their child's future and they don't want them to see profanity, fine, don't let them play the game:).

You know I never understand the point of the language filter or the even "teen rating" of games like these. Not just this game. You have the same problem in CS, DOD, COD, FEAR, and so on. The main idea of these games are "killing". We, each of us, join a server everyday, to kill other players in the game. And don't give me that oh it's fun and oh it's nice to play an online game with 30 people communicating with each other.. I have been playing PC games long enough to know that the main theme of these games are to destroy your opponent. And that will ALWAYS include swearing, profanity, etc.

I 100% agree. If that was in the game, we wouldnt use a swear kicker. Although there are some things that could still get you banned like arguing with other players but that wouldnt be automatic ban, it would be up to the admins.

Its amazing to me that programmers like dice who spent literally months if not years on this game, couldnt plan ahead for simple things like this... I guess when you look at it theres a whole list of simple, obvious things that they should have realised...for example..

                              1) the server browser was/is crap. It struggles on basic things. They could have used technologies and methods that had been tried and tested on 100s of games and chat clients. also, why is there no lobby to meet up in??
                              2) swearing should be able to be blocked
                              3) voice comms for people in same vehicle would have been nice
                              4) people change clans, they might want to change their nickname
                              5) little details like soldiers blinking is sapping cpu cycles for no good reason. who looks at the each others eyes in the middle of a battle??

i mean surely at some point during development, someone stood back and said.."heyyy...."

                              oh yeah,

                              6) SpecOps: UAV's spotting all the covert players?? i mean come on! how can anyone launch a proper sneak attack when you can be seen by commander pretty much all the time?!
