Highway to the Boredom Zone, a pilots perspective on the 1.2 patch

After many requests for a dogfighting video tutorial, I've finally delivered. On an obvious sour note however, as this is dogfighting in the 1.2 patch, but I often find satire to be quite effective at getting a point across.

All of this footage was filmed during a single round of 64 player Wake, I would've liked to get more dogfighting footage in but towards the end of the round the enemy team stopped bothering with the planes.

Im have around 50 hours in a jet. I went 34 and 4 on wake just by staying above the aa sheild. I was lucky and happen to see my bogies first in nearly every case. When i didnt i was shot down. Guess it is first sight, first to fire, first to win?

You make no mention of the Surface to Air missiles, and I guess they just didn't bother to man the Essex against you.

I feel we have all come to the conclusion that Surface to air is fine..its air to air thats a joke now.

Nice video man, really shows how ridiculous it is in the air for someone with experience. Especially against my beloved choppa! I despise your kind every day

Its true, leave the IGLAs/Stingers the same... Thats fine, me and my gunner can deal with that, but give the guys in the air some dogfights! And don't make it so darn easy to take out choppas!

In part I agree that S2A is balanced to an extent, as on the first observation of the ground AA I thought they had kept the range at the same ridiculous levels in 1.1, but they lowered it a bit which helps balance things out. They really need to slow the reload time on them though, and make it so they are required to be repaired by an engineer after being destroyed. I'd be happy if they made those adjustments, and made it so the missiles in general don't chase any target other than the one they were originally locked on to. I think everyone would be pleased with that change.

Air to air combat however is a complete joke, as is clearly visible in the video.

No matter what you say some idot will charge in this thread and explain to us the logic of how AA is great since he pounded ground and and hwo were all morons with no skills now..then will sit back and go "no..air to air.." and then this cycle will keep going on..

I'm not going to rail you like I did regarding S2A - but boy I hope they don't require engineers to repair AA sites. No one plays engineer, so it'd revert the AA sites back to being useless.

Regarding A2A, I'll just ask this:
How do you forsee reconciling modern air warfare with the desire to keep things "interesting"?

Modern sidewinders, the simplest of the A2A missiles, can pull 180-degree turns on targets coming toward a pilot. Indeed, this isn't World War 2 - weapons are deadly and many engagements do come down to who gets behind whom first - and why can't that be the dimension on which pilots compete?

Planewhore I have to be absolutley honest, I dont see how the hell your missles can just hit the plane at such sharp angles he was turning. I have about 36 hours in planes and got to be pretty good. I flew pretty much exaclty as you did but my missles 75% of the time would just fly right past them even without them using flares. Which was bs. So from there I had to just shoot them down with my bullets and that became more effecient then the missles. At the angles he was flying at and then your missles hitting him I just dont see how thats possible. Im not flaming or anything.

Id lead the plane a little as you did turning into their flight path and my missles would just happily act like the never locked on anything to begin with and fly off in the sky. Thats when I came to my senses and decided flying was for noobs and gave up the sky!

In my humble opinion planes just add the the problem of the entire team camping for one then someone TK's the person EVERY time if they dont get it lol. And as far as them "lowering hit points" on planes I seem to be killed even quicker by plane bullets while in a chopper, and sure enough the bombers sure as hell havnt changed. Ah well enough of my rant. :p

Ahhhhhh, sorry planewhore I didnt see that the video was post 1.2. Heh long reply for nothing lol. But I did forget to mention it was a cool video! One question if you dont mind. How do you get that video so long and the size of it smaller? Using fraps I would record 15 seconds and it would be like 120mb lol. I cant figure out how to make a good long video but it be smaller in size.

Because that´d be boring. If the ONLY competition in air is "who gets behind whom first" I´d park my F35 under a tree, ask for a supply crate and start using it as a 6 pack against ya´ll. LOL

Dogfighting was a competition of maneuvering and outmaneuvering and it was ALREADY a competition on who got behind whom first. But that alone didnt grant the victory. From PWs video (Thanks man, great song and wonderful comments BTW.) I could see that he didnt even BOTHER staying behind an opposing jet. He just sat there for as long as it took for the missile to lock on, let loose and bam, he went to search for a new target. This system is pathetic to say the least. I personally dont want a fight for a first missile lock, I want a fight of skills. Reality? Dont bring it in here, its a PvP game where skills must matter the most.

Anyhow, great video PW, mind telling me what that song was? I giggled as soon as the video started up.

PS. Notice the only reason he used the MG was to cook up that dead bird.
And of course.... poor chopper pilots... hahahaha.

Using the cheapest tool youve got "Windows Movie Maker" you can edit it to a reasonable size

99% of ground engagements are decided based on who saw who first. It's called initiative, and it ought to matter a lot.

To me, the more important question is whether or not Planewhore can shake off someone who gets on his six first - that would prove a lot more. Such as whether or not air combat is reduced to that single factor. Of course, we'd never know if he was throwing the test just to make his point.

That is correct, BUT seeing someone first was far from being victorious since you had to rely on your skills and experience to kill. As in air, you COULD give the lethal blow prepatch, but often you had to work for the kill. Given the circumstances where maneuvering had more limits and dimensions, longer fights were expected to happen.

To me, the more important question is whether or not Planewhore can shake off someone who gets on his six first - that would prove a lot more. Of course, we'd never know if he was throwing the test just to make his point.
I think that video proved pretty much that if someone would have had a lock-on to him (personally, just using the "stay slow and stay back"/"throttle control" method, I would be behind almost anyone reasonably enough to aquire a decent lock), he would have been toasted and I expect him to not to have any illusions about that fact.
